FBI: Trump appointee arrested in connection with Capitol riot

Federico Klein, a former State Department aide who worked on former President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign, was arrested Thursday on charges related to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, the FBI announced Thursday night.

This is the first known instance of a Trump appointee facing prosecution in connection with the attack, Politico reports. An FBI Washington Field Office spokeswoman told Politico that Klein, 42, was taken into custody in Virginia, but did not release any information on the charges against him.

Federal Election Commission records show Klein worked as a tech analyst for the 2016 Trump campaign, Politico says, and after the election he was hired at the State Department. A federal directory from last summer lists Klein as a special assistant in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, making him a "Schedule C" political appointee, Politico reports.

'We don't want to be guinea pigs': how one African community is fighting genetically modified mosquitoes

t the start of the rainy season earlier this year – when mosquitoes multiply and malaria strikes – scientists, officials and journalists gathered in the small village of Bana, Burkina Faso.

At their feet were cases containing thousands of male mosquitoes, genetically engineered to be sterile and fluorescent – so they can be easily recaptured for further study later. The cases were opened and a second later, the mosquitoes swarmed out.

This was a landmark moment in the long history of malaria control as it was the first ever release of genetically-modified mosquitoes on the African continent. It was also the very first step in a 12-year experiment to reduce the population of one species of the insect that is responsible for most of the 4,000 malaria deaths in Burkina Faso every year.

Researchers from the Target Malaria consortium, a not-for-profit research group funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and various research institutions, have developed a mosquito in their laboratory that can kill off its own species by spreading a faulty gene.

In the Instagram video, young people can be seen seemingly fleeing a building, with some jumping from a walkway on the building’s second floor. The caption attempts to suggest that the video shows Nigerian students escaping the school to avoid receiving a mandated COVID-19 vaccination.

Contrary to the post’s claim, the video predates the coronavirus pandemic and COVID-19 vaccines. Check Your Fact found that the video has been posted online since at least May 2019, when African outlets published articles about an incident involving a tear gas canister at a school in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
