Legal fund for ex-Trump aide Michael Caputo nears quarter of a million dollars
A legal fund for Michael Caputo, a former Trump campaign aide, has accumulated almost a quarter of a million dollars in funds to help Caputo cover his legal costs associated with the investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
The description of the legal fund claims that Caputo isn’t a subject of investigation, but rather is viewed as a witness.
“Consequently, Michael has endured hours of redundant testimony before various US Government bodies, each time requiring many hours of highly specialized and expensive legal assistance,” the legal fund’s description says. “Thus, he has incurred tens of thousands of dollars of legal bills while defending the GOP and the President of the United States. Experts predict that his legal fees could exceed $125,000.”
“Please take a stand for justice and the Trump presidency and support one of his most loyal allies: Michael Caputo,” the description continues. “This GoFundMe account will gather money to help Michael Caputo and his family pay these unfair and inescapable legal bills spawned by the endless and pointless ‘Trump/Russia collusion’ probes.”
Last week, Caputo testified before special counsel Robert Mueller's team and the Senate Intelligence Committee.
In his closing remarks before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Caputo told members of the panel, “God damn you to hell,” after outlining how the probe “forced” his family out of their home and “crushed” his children as a result of the legal costs associated with the inquiry.
Mueller and the Senate intelligence panel are looking into Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin. Caputo also testified before the House Intelligence Committee last summer. That panel recently wrapped up its Russia inquiry.
Trump has repeatedly said there was no collusion with Russia and has called Mueller’s investigation a “witch hunt” on multiple occasions.
The GoFundMe account was established on April 22 by Danielle Letina from Buffalo, N.Y., where Caputo is based. The funds will “delivered in person to a member of his trustees.”
Another source of funding is coming from a legal defense trust fund set up by local Conservative Party leader Ralph Lorigo, according to WGRZ, a local NBC affiliate.
