Thousand-Year-Old Furnace in Cambodia Shows How Earth's Magnetic Field Shifts

https://www.insidescience.org/news/thousand-year-old-furnace-cambodia-shows-how-earths-magnetic-field-shifts

A weaker magnetic field would be a less effective shield against solar storms or cosmic rays, which in today's modern world could harm power grids and satellite communication systems. Some geophysicists have suggested Earthโ€™s magnetic field might soon reverse direction, but Tauxe is skeptical about such a catastrophic shift. Instead, she argues the new evidence suggests the magnetic field may weaken, potentially suddenly in isolated locations.

"We should be thinking about how to armor ourselves against a large change in the magnetic fieldโ€ instead of a total pole reversal, she said. โ€œIt will go down fast, it will continue to go down, and that does leave us vulnerable.โ€

Brunt of cold winter storm hitting Southern California to be felt Wednesday

https://www.dailybreeze.com/2021/03/09/brunt-of-cold-winter-storm-hitting-southern-california-to-be-felt-wednesday/

This weekโ€™s storm was being brought on by a slow-moving, low-pressure system dropping down from the Oregon-California border, Moreland said.

โ€œItโ€™s not unusual to see this type of storm in March,โ€ he said. โ€œItโ€™s a very cold system, but weโ€™ve certainly had storms like this before in March.โ€

The storm was projected to end Friday, followed by a warming trend starting over the weekend, Moreland said.

Roger Mudd, a probing TV journalist and network news anchor, dies at 93

Roger Mudd, a longtime CBS News political correspondent who reported on the Pentagon's profligate spending, whose interview with Ted Kennedy ended the senator's White House prospects and who briefly shared the anchor job at his onetime rival, NBC News, died March 9 at his home in McLean, Va. He was 93.

Mudd admitted in his memoir that he could be "a pain in the neck and elsewhere," sometimes angering his corporate bosses at CBS. After a 1970 speech at Washington and Lee, in which he criticized TV news as a "crude" medium that devalues thoughtful coverage, he was removed as Cronkite's backup for two years.
