Recording of Trump Phone Call to Georgia Lead Investigator Reveals New Details

Then-president says ‘Something bad happened’ and presses for investigation into Fulton County votes

ATLANTA—Then-President Donald Trump urged the chief investigator of the Georgia Secretary of State’s office to look for fraud during an audit of mail-in ballots in a suburban Atlanta county, on a phone call he made to her in late December.

During the six-minute call, which was reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, Mr. Trump repeatedly said that he won Georgia. “Something bad happened,” he said.

“When the right answer comes out, you’ll be praised,” Mr. Trump told the chief investigator, Frances Watson.

She responded: “I can assure you that our team and the [Georgia Bureau of Investigation], that we are only interested in the truth and finding the information that is based on the facts.”

The Washington Post reported on the call in January, but this is the first time the recording has been released.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has launched a criminal investigation into alleged efforts to have officials in Georgia overturn the state’s results of November’s presidential election. In a February letter to officials, Ms. Willis said a grand jury would convene this month.

In early January, media outlets, including the Journal, published news of a recording of a telephone conversation between Mr. Trump and several supporters and Mr. Raffensperger and his staff. During that Jan. 2 call, Mr. Trump urged Mr. Raffensperger to “find” votes to change the election outcome. He berated Mr. Raffensperger for not doing more to overturn the election.

Representatives of the former president didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

Grothman accuses Black Lives Matter of disliking the 'old-fashioned family,' drawing rebuke from Democrat on House floor

Craig Gilbert, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel 3 hrs ago

WASHINGTON – In the midst of the U.S. House debate Wednesday over the $1.9 trillion stimulus plan, Wisconsin Republican Glenn Grothman said in his floor remarks that Black Lives Matter “doesn't like the old-fashioned family,” prompting an impassioned rebuke from a Democratic colleague who represents the Virgin Islands, delegate Stacey Plaskett.

Grothman, who represents Wisconsin's Sixth Congressional District, argued that the expansion of the earned income tax credit for single people contained in the bill penalizes marriage.

“I bring it up because I know the strength that Black Lives Matter had in this last election. I know it's a group that doesn't like the old-fashioned family — (I am) disturbed that we have another program here in which we're increasing the marriage penalty,” Grothman said.

Plaskett, who is African American, fired back:

“How dare you, how dare you say that Black Lives Matter, (that) Black people do not understand old-fashioned families despite some of the issues, some of the things that you have put forward that I've heard out of your mouth in the Oversight Committee, in your own district,” she said.

“We have been able to keep our families alive for over 400 years, and the assault on our families to not have Black lives or not even have Black families. How dare you say that we are not interested in families in the Black community. That is outrageous. That should be stricken down," said Plaskett, who served recently as one of the House impeachment managers.

Her remarks drew applause from Democrats on the floor.

Grothman also criticized a provision of the COVID-19 relief bill aimed at providing debt relief and other assistance to disadvantaged Black farmers. Advocates of the provision cite historic mistreatment of African American farmers and the loss of agricultural land. Grothman called that part of the bill "incredibly divisive" because, "Some people are going to get forgiveness. Some people aren't."

Senate Democrat Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin lauded Plaskett on Twitter for her response to Grothman, saying, "Systemic racism is real. Even on the floor of Congress. I stand with @StaceyPlaskett and thank her for speaking truth to power."

“Depression is understandable during these times,” the former first lady told People magazine.

Michelle Obama spoke about her struggles with “low-grade depression,” during the challenges of 2020.

“We had the continued killing of Black men at the hands of police. Just seeing the video of George Floyd, experiencing that eight minutes. That’s a lot to take on, not to mention being in the middle of a quarantine."
