Did the FBI make off with 'seven to nine tons' of Civil War-era gold in a Pennsylvania forest after a treasure hunting duo led them to its long-hidden location?
A father-son team wants to know, and has successfully sued for access to government emails about the dig.
Here's what we know, according to the Associated Press.
On march 13, 2018, treasure hunters Dennis and Kem Parada, who co-own the treasure-hunting outfit Finders Keepers, led FBI agents to a location in "Dent's Run," located approximately 135 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.
The Paradas had spent years looking for the long-lost booty, an 1863 shipment of Union gold, which was either lost or stolen on its way to the US Mint in Philadelphia.
The FBI brought in geophysical consulting firm, Enviroscan, to survey the hilltop site, where their gravimeter identified 'a large metallic mass with the density of gold," according to Warren Getler, a consultant who worked closely with both the FBI and the Paradas.
An FBI agent told them the location of the mass was “one or two feet off Denny’s sweet spot,” recalled Getler, author of “Rebel Gold,” a book exploring the possibility of buried Civil War-era caches of gold and silver. “Then I went to ask how big is it. And he said, ‘7 to 9 tons.’ And I literally said, ‘You’ve got to be kidding!’”
That much gold would be worth hundreds of millions of dollars today — and, assuming it was there, would almost certainly touch off a legal fight over how to divvy up the spoils. -AP
The FBI says they found nothing at the site, while Enviroscan co-founder Timothy Bechtel said the FBI told him to keep his mouth shut about his findings.

Madrid will not shut its borders for Easter, region’s president says, defying Covid measures adopted by rest of Spain
The Madrid region will be the only one in Spain without a Covid-19 border shutdown for Easter, its President Isabel Diaz Ayuso said on Wednesday following a meeting of top-level health chiefs.
Spain’s Interterritorial Council of the National Health System (CISNS) met to approve a number of health measures for Spanish regional and national holidays, including border closures.
But Ayuso announced that Madrid would not close its perimeter from March 17 to 21 or between March 26 and April 9, and would instead “take the measures that we believe appropriate.”
In theory, visitors will therefore be able to enter Madrid for the festival of San José on March 19 and Easter – known in Spain as Semana Santa – when it begins on March 28.
Madrid will enforce the other measures adopted by the CISNS for the holiday periods, including night-time curfews from 11pm-6am and limiting group sizes to a maximum of six people outside and four indoors.
The Spanish government’s health minister, Carolina Darias, told reporters on Wednesday that the intention behind the measures is “to continue saving lives” over the Easter period – traditionally a very important time for Spaniards, when families typically gather for large celebrations.
However, Madrid’s own health minister Enrique Ruiz Escudero has criticized the fact that Spain’s 17 autonomous regions can close their borders, but do not have control over their airports. “It is incomprehensible that a citizen of Madrid cannot go to any Spanish region and a French, a German or a Belgian can,” he said.

Girl, 3, allegedly murdered by mum and stepdad in possible ‘satanic ritual’
A three-year-old girl has died in hospital from an infection after her parents allegedly jabbed her with two large needles.
The parents of a three-year-old girl who had two large needles inserted into her chest near her heart and lungs have been arrested on suspicion of killing the child in a satanic ritual.
The objects were found inside Maia Vallejos after she died in hospital from an infection that affected her vital organs and caused cardiac arrest.
She was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital in Quitilipi, northeast Argentinia.
Maia’s 20-year-old mum and 19-year-old stepdad were arrested by police on the outskirts of the village where they lived, while allegedly trying to escape for fear of being lynched.
One needle measuring 10cm and normally used to sew up footballs was touching her heart.
The other, an older needle which had been placed in her body some time before her death, was affecting her lungs and has been blamed for the sepsis she suffered.
The chilling details of the autopsy find emerged as authorities said they were probing all possibilities including that of a satanic ritual.
Chaco’s Assistant Attorney-General Miguel Fonteina said of Maia: “This little girl suffered an appalling situation.”
Prosecutor Cristian Arana confirmed: “One of the needles was in contact with the little girl’s lung and heart, in the middle of her chest and the other in her thymus between her sternum and lungs.
“This one was the older of the two and caused her a generalised infection, lung inflammation and inflammation to her kidneys which led to her suffering cardiac arrest.”

Data stolen in new cyberattack on Norwegian Parliament linked to Microsoft software – spokesperson
The Norwegian Parliament has been hit by another cyberattack just six months after its IT systems were previously compromised, its administrative chief Marianne Andreassen said in a statement on Wednesday.
"We know that data has been extracted but we do not yet have a complete overview of the situation," she said.
The attack is related to a "vulnerability" in Microsoft's Exchange email and calendaring software, which the tech giant may not have been aware of, but which hackers may have been able to exploit.
Andreassen said the extent of the damage and the culprits are unknown, but that parliament has taken "comprehensive measures" in collaboration with Norway's security services.
The incident has also been reported to the police.
President of the Norwegian Parliament Tone Wilhelmsen Troen said the country's threat level is "increasingly demanding" and that cyberattacks can have "serious consequences" for democratic processes.
It is not known if this latest hack on the parliament is connected to another in September 2020, in which the emails of several MPs and members of staff were hacked.
Data was reportedly downloaded in that attack, which was described as "significant" and was investigated by Norway's counterintelligence agency, the National Security Authority (NSA), alongside the police.
Norwegian Foreign Minister Ine Eriksen Soereideclaimed in October that Russian hackers were behind the attack – allegations Moscow denies and for which Oslo has provided no evidence.

Narco-busting nan: Italian grandmother helps police bust mafia cocaine ring after grandson's drug addiction
A grandmother's tip-off over fears for her drug-addicted grandson has led anti-mafia police in Italy to arrest 33 people for alleged drug trafficking and for possession of illegal weapons in the southern region of Calabria.
The woman got in touch with police after her grandchild had become hooked on drugs sold by the Muto clan, which is part of the notorious Calabrian mafia group, the 'Ndrangheta, according to Italian newspaper La Repubblica.
Her tip-off allowed officers to smash open a drug ring overseen by the Muto from the town of Cetraro, where dealers allegedly openly peddled vast quantities of cocaine and other substances in the region's town squares.
"The grandmother went to the Carabinieri (police) to ask them to save her grandson who was being devoured by the world of drugs," Colonel Piero Sutera, commander of the local Carabinieri police force, told reporters on Wednesday.
During raids, officers seized at least two kilos of hashish, 700 grams of marijuana and also uncovered a secret drug bunker that was being built above a bathroom in one of the suspect's homes.
On Wednesday, a total of 33 individuals were charged with narcotics production and possession, extortion, and the illegal possession of firearms, among other crimes, at the request of the anti-mafia prosecutor in the southern city Catanzaro.
Investigators said they had discovered some 250 instances of drug dealing by the clan, which relies on the narcotics trade as its core business and is one of the most powerful groups in the 'Ndrangheta.
The Muto also has control over the local area's fish market, as well as other services related to the tourism sector, including laundry, security surveillance and cleaning.
The busts are the latest in an ongoing crackdown against organized crime in Italy.
A huge "maxi trial" of 355 'Ndrangheta mafia suspects was launched in Calabria in January this year, Italy's largest such trial for more than 30 years.

UC-Berkeley unveils plan for racial quota
The University of California Berkeley has set a goal to have at least 25% of undergraduate students identify as "Chicanx/Latinx" by 2027.
The quota is part of an effort by the university to become a Hispanic-Serving Institution.

A Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) is defined as one that "has an enrollment of undergraduate full-time equivalent students that is at least 25 percent Hispanic students at the end of the award year immediately preceding the date of application.”
The report states that Christ would like to see 25 percent of undergraduate students "self-identify as Chicanx/Latinx" by 2027.
"[Christ] identified this priority as one of the boldest goals in the campus’ strategic plan—for at least 25 percent of enrolled undergraduate students to self-identify as Chicanx/Latinx, for the University to be a preferred destination for Pell Grant eligible students, and for every student to thrive at Berkeley and to find belonging in all dimensions of the campus towards a true exemplification of comprehensive excellence," the report said.

The HSI task force is divided into three implementation phases from 2020-2027. Phase three’s goal (2025-2027) is to apply for HSI Designation.
Six other UC schools are already HSI designated: UC-Davis, UC-Santa Barbara, UC-Riverside, UC-Merced, UC-Santa Cruz, and UC-Irvine.
In 2020, UC-Berkeley had a 17.9 percent Latino student population, roughly 7.1 percent away from meeting the enrollment requirement, according to the report overview.
“Excellence is rooted in diversity Berkeley’s excellence demands diversity diversity of thought, perspective, experience, cultural identity. In order to keep Berkeley relevant, we must enhance and strengthen our efforts to attract and retain diverse community members, The Hispanic Serving Institution Initiative is one of several important inclusion programs that will help us achieve this excellence,” reads the report.

Although the United Arab Emirates formally left the war in Yemen in 2019, its deep ties to nearly 100,000 militia fighters and the Southern Transitional Council have ensured it will continue to exert considerable influence on the conduct of the war as it enters its sixth year.
Satellite photos have revealed construction of an airfield on an island at the mouth of the Red Sea. While its occupancy is presently unknown, the island was once under the control of the United Arab Emirates, which recently closed its base across the waterway.
Citing photos taken by Planet Labs’ Earth imaging satellites, the Drive's the War Zone reported on Tuesday that a roughly 6,150-foot-long runway was under construction on Perim, also known as Mayyun, an island that straddles the Bab al-Mandab, the narrow strait that connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean beyond.
According to the outlet’s analysis, the construction began on the airstrip sometime last month. The soon-to-be airtstrip is about 165 feet wide and 6,150 feet long - large enough to handle heavy cargo transport aircraft that would be used to ferry war materiel such as armored vehicles, trucks, and munitions. However, they note that a past project by the United Arab Emirates attempted to build an even longer 10,000-foot runway in 2016, the remains of which can still be seen in the satellite photos. It’s unclear why the new effort doesn’t make sure of the old right-of-way.
According to the blog Intel Lab, the new facility is Emirati as well, although it’s unclear why exactly they think so.
At the start of the Yemen War in 2015, the island was controlled by the Houthis, who were quickly evicted by Gulf Arab forces allied with Saudi Arabia and the government of Yemeni President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi, who was forced from power by the Houthis in early 2015. The Emiratis likewise established a base across the Red Sea at Assab, Eritrea, in late 2015 to ferry heavy weaponry into Yemen as well as allied forces from Sudan, and they also temporarily occupied Yemen’s Socotra, a picturesque island off the easternmost tip of Africa that is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
During its occupation, the UAE established a detention facility on Perim, according to Qatar-based Al Jazeera. Later in the war, after Abu Dhabi began its preparations for withdrawal in 2019, Saudi forces moved into garrison Perim Island, along with Yemeni security forces.
Last month it was reported that Abu Dhabi was dismantling its base in Assab, and according to Intel Lab, the base’s functions are being relocated to Perim. With its location just a dozen miles from Africa and sitting astride one of the world’s busiest sea lanes, Perim provides a commanding position from which to both exert influence and collect information. Intel Lab noted that the facility could be used to house signals intelligence instruments as well as prevent blockades of the strait, in addition to taking over Assab’s role as a logistics hub.
Perim has historically been garrisoned by naval powers for just such reasons, including the Portuguese, British, and Ottoman Empires, as well as the United Arab Republic and the Soviet Union.

UAE-Israel intelligence base on Yemeni island of Socotra
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Israel were working silently on a plan to establish spy bases on the Yemeni island of Socotra, according to JForum, the official site of the Jewish and French-speaking community. The two countries, which normalized relations earlier last month, have already undertaken steps to install a secret station on Socotra, which is strategically located in the Arabian Sea some 350 kilometers (217 miles) south of Yemen and currently under the control of the Emirates.
According to the report, a delegation of Israeli and Emirati intelligence officers recently visited Socotra and examined various locations for establishing the planned intelligence base. The purpose of such a spy station would be to collect intelligence across the region, particularly from the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a sea route chokepoint between the Horn of Africa and the south of Yemen, along with the Gulf of Aden and the Middle East.
The report alleged that Tel Aviv’s surveillance centers would monitor the actions of Houthi militants in Yemen and Iranian naval movements in the region, as well as examine sea and air traffic in the southern part of the Red Sea.
More than normalization
Influence and security considerations have been cited as major reasons for the UAE breaking ranks with its Arab neighbors to normalize ties with Israel, leading to accusations that the Emirati rulers have been cooperating with the Zionist occupying state and the U.S. in diplomatic aggression against the Palestinians.
Despite the UAE’s insistence that the normalization deal prevents further annexation of Palestinian territory, critics have suggested that the agreement does nothing of the sort and instead helps Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli right to harden their position. Netanyahu has long maintained that he could force Arab countries to reverse the “land for peace” formula – which has been the bedrock of any solution – by normalizing ties with Arab autocrats without giving occupied territory back to the Palestinians.

Your Tax Dollars Will Fund Transgender Surgery for Military, Veterans
Taxpayers will foot the bill for experimental and extremely controversial transgender “treatments” including cross-sex hormones and surgeries that arguably harm healthy bodies in the pursuit of transgender identity. These surgeries, which involve the removal of healthy sexual organs, can cost as much as $200,000.
On January 25, President Joe Biden issued an order explicitly championing transgender identity in the military. He reversed former President Donald Trump’s policy, which did not ban transgender Americans from the military but did insist that all service members serve according to their biological sex, not their gender identity.
Biden’s order directed the secretary of defense and the secretary of homeland security to “establish a process by which transgender service members may transition gender while serving,” although it remained unclear whether or not taxpayers would get stuck with the bill for transgender surgery.
Later that day, however, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced that the Department of Defense would endorse transgender identity and pay for “transition related care.”
“This revised policy will also ensure all medically-necessary transition related care authorized by law is available to all Service members and will re-examine all cases of transgender Service members that may be in some form of adverse administrative proceedings,” Austin wrote.
In February, the Department of Veterans Affairs announced that VA Secretary Denis McDonough had ordered a review requiring the VA to examine “the delivery of medically necessary, gender affirmation care and procedures.”
McDonough directed VA employees to “Perform an assessment of the necessary steps to eliminate the exclusion of ‘gender alteration’ (gender affirmation surgery) in the medical benefits package,” The Washington Examiner reported.
Austin and McDonough did not put a dollar figure on the cost for transgender treatments. The Philadelphia Center for Transgender Surgery presents a plethora of surgeries for male-to-female and female-to-male surgeries that add up to between $100,000 and $200,000.
Citing an arguably flawed 2016 study, Biden argued that endorsing transgenderism in the military “would have only a minimal impact on military readiness and healthcare costs.” Yet a 2019 USA Today investigation found that the Pentagon spent $8 million to treat just 1,500 transgender military officials, including cross-sex hormones and some surgeries. While an Obama-era policy barred the VA from providing transgender surgery, that policy expired in 2018. A federal study revealed that more than 15,000 service members and 134,000 veterans identify as transgender.
Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.), an Afghanistan veteran, told The Washington Examiner that while he supports allowing service members to serve in accordance with their gender identity, he opposes taxpayer funding for gender transition.
“This is radical and new territory for a presidential administration to force taxpayers to fund sexual reassignment surgeries for those in the military,” Banks told the Examiner. “I’m compassionate toward those individuals who want to undergo an elective surgery of this nature, but taxpayers shouldn’t be on the hook to pay for it. It’s constitutionally dubious that Congress hasn’t passed these measures, but the administration, in a radical way, is pushing through this agenda. I sit on the committee that should debate these issues.”

A Racial Conspiracy Theorist Has Been Confirmed as HUD Secretary, and That's Not Even the Worst Part
Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-Ohio), has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve as Joe Biden’s secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Her nomination was controversial even before it was officially announced. In 2015, she pleaded for leniency for Lance Mason, a former Ohio state legislator, who had beaten his then-wife in front of their children. Mason got out of jail after serving nine months and later murdered his ex-wife in 2018.
In 2019, on the floor of the House of Representatives, Fudge read a letter from a constituent who called Donald Trump supporters “racist,” and “dumb.”
“It is glaringly apparent that many who support the present administration are either racist, steeped in religious beliefs, ignorant, or as my mother used to say just plain dumb,” Fudge read. “They have chosen to support a president who has a proven record of being sexually condescending to women, will not oppose the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan and other hate organizations, is indecisive, condescending to anyone who challenges him, and hides behind his Twitter account rather than dealing with the real issues in our country and around the world. To put icing on this cake, he’s a proven liar.”
Her actions received bipartisan criticism.
Fudge is also a racial conspiracy theorist with a history of spouting wacko ideas.
In April 2020, she made the ridiculous claim during a Biden campaign live stream rally that the COVID-19 pandemic proves that America is systemically racist. “Black people have always been aware of systemic and institutional racism. COVID-19 just proved to the rest of the country that it exists,” she said. “If we do not elect Joe Biden, we will not recover in my lifetime. I’m not being dramatic, I’m being honest.”
The worst thing about her confirmation is that Fudge, a radical, race-baiting conspiracist, was confirmed 66-34.

And there’s more to her crazy conspiracy theories. She also claimed that the Trump administration was purposefully opening up businesses targetting lower-income America to get black people to spend their COVID relief checks. “You know, they opened the beauty salons and the barbershops and the bowling alleys and the movie theaters. When they start opening up the country clubs and the tanning spas, then I’m going to go to one,” she claimed. “Because they’re just opening up the things black people go to because they know we’ve got these checks and they want us to spend them. They don’t care about our safety. That’s why when they start opening up things they go to, then I’ll understand it’s time to start to open up some things for us.”
Kamala Harris, who was also on the live stream, nodded in agreement and said, “That’s right.”
