WAR

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) provided statistics on Russian activity in Syria. According to reports, Russia has carried out 280 airstrikes in 96 hours (four days). According to the SOHR, Russian units performed almost half of them (130) in the last 24 hours.

The SOHR also says that the Syrian army has also increased its activity. In 24 hours, the Syrian Arab Army fired 225 artillery shells and missiles. There is still no exact death toll from the Russian and Syrian attacks, but experts believe the casualties could reach about 300.

In addition to airstrikes by Russian aerospace forces, Russia has increased its use of artillery and ballistic missiles in recent days. On March 5, the Russian military attacked oil convoys and depots destined for Turkey. Two types of ballistic missiles were used – Iskander and Tochka-U OTRK. The attacks took place nearly 1.5km from the Turkish border.

In February 2020, Turkey lost at least 62 troops killed in Syria. Nearly 100 soldiers were wounded, Syrian-backed forces destroyed dozens of Turkish armored vehicles, and more than ten drones, including drones, were shot down. Washington has repeatedly accused Moscow of involvement in the deaths of Turkish soldiers, Russia rejects these allegations.

In early March, the presidents of Russia and Turkey, Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, agreed that a ceasefire came into force in the Idlib de-escalation zone. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad later said that if the US and Turkish military did not leave the country, Damascus would use power.

European supplier of sustainable, high-quality battery cells and systems, Northvolt, announced on March 10 the acquisition of US-based battery technology company Cuberg delivering high-performance lithium metal cells produced on existing lithium-ion manufacturing lines for electromobility solutions.

According to Northvolt, Cuberg spun out of Stanford University in 2015 with the goal of commercializing next-generation battery technology based on a groundbreaking liquid electrolyte combined with a lithium metal anode. Cuberg counts numerous innovative mobility companies among its customers, including Boeing, BETA Technologies, Ampaire and VoltAero. The company’s investors and financial backers include Boeing HorizonX Ventures, Activate.org, the California Energy Commission, the US Department of Energy, and the TomKat Center at Stanford.

Among Northvolt industrial partners and customers are ABB, BMW Group, Scania, Siemens, Vattenfall, Vestas and the Volkswagen Group.

“The Cuberg team has shown exceptional ability to develop world-class technology, proven results and an outstanding customer base in a lean and efficient organization,” Northvolt CEO and Co-Founder Peter Carlsson said. “Combining these strengths with the capabilities and technology of Northvolt allows us to make significant improvements in both performance and safety while driving down cost even further for next-generation battery cells.

Cuberg CEO and Co-Founder Richard Wang hailed the partnership with Northvolt to build the future of clean energy. “Northvolt brings incredible technology and manufacturing capabilities that will accelerate the commercialization and adoption of our lithium metal technology. Their deep engineering experience and bold spirit perfectly complement Cuberg’s own culture of rapid innovation,” he said.

Cuberg’s batteries, based on its breakthrough electrolyte technology for lithium metal anode, are optimally designed for commercialization. Validated by trusted third parties the cells deliver more than 70 percent increased range and capacity versus comparable lithium-ion cells designed for high-rate electric aviation applications.

Donald Trump’s acting Defense Secretary Chris Miller blamed the former president's speech for inciting the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection in an interview with VICE.

“Would anybody have marched on the Capitol, and overrun the Capitol, without the president’s speech? I think it’s pretty much definitive that wouldn’t have happened,” Miller said in an interview with VICE on Showtime

“It seems cause-and-effect,” Miller said. “The question is, did he know he was enraging the crowd to do that? I don’t know.”

Miller has been criticized for not mobilizing National Guard troops quickly enough during the insurrection. D.C. National Guard chief William Walker testified that it took hours for Miller to approve troop deployment. Military officials were wary of how troop presence could be perceived, Walker said. Robert Salesses, a senior Pentagon official, testified that Miller wanted to take time before deploying the Guard to better understand how they would be deployed.
