The real question is this - why did Jesus bring it up to begin with?
It is likely He was calling out the ‘elites’ of His time doing exactly that. He drew a parallel for them - associating the pursuit of eternal life with their actions - and attached it to Himself.
Catholicism pretends that the bread and wine become the flesh and blood (in a literal sense); which Christ said to eat the bread / drink the wine in remembrance of His sacrifice.
A long standing reminder that it isn’t the eating of flesh or drinking of blood that bring eternal life - but His once and for all sacrifice alone brings eternal life.
