Ok so I have a theory about the real reason the NG is surrounding the Capitol building.

Let’s go back to 1993 in Somalia shortly before the black hawk down incident. When the 160th SOAR arrived, basically all the black hawks and little bird helicopters that were there, they would fly over Mogadishu often doing something called “signature flights.”

These flights were done to get Somalis and the militia used to seeing them all the time, but they were just flying around a lot and never actually did anything. Over time, this conditioned the Somalis to get used to their presence and not worry too much about them.

Then one day, they suddenly hover over a target building and Rangers and Delta rope out and whoever is in the the target building is in for it. Incidentally, I know a guy who roped out of the first blackhawk shortly before it got shot down there. He is a VERY interesting person but that’s another story.

I think with the NG being there so long now, we’ve gotten used to it, same results as the signature flights. And when the military finally does make their move and publicly take over, having seen the military in DC for so long now, it will mitigate the shock that most will feel and this is likely by design.
