Gets me thinking about the use of laser "guide stars" in adaptive optical astronomy to correct for atmospheric distortion of INCOMING LIGHT.

I see no reason that the same adaptive optics couldn't be used to correct atmospheric distortion for OUTGOING LASERS from ground based installations.

Need to dig DARPA, though it would probably be a black budget item.
