Gore: Republicans Actually Believe Only the Wealthy, Powerful Should Vote
Former Vice President Al Gore said on Monday on CNNâs âTonightâ that Republicans believed that the United States âwould be better if the wealthy and powerfulâ voted.
Lemon said, âThe next big battle, you know it is going to be over the GOP to restrict voting rights. A lot of these bills target Black and brown voters. Is this only going to get worse as demographics continue to change and Republicans are increasingly in the minorities? Is their effort is going to pick up to disenfranchise voters, especially those of color?â
Gore said, âAbsolutely. This is really and truly un-American Don. This is a naked effort trying to suppress Black, brown and indigenous voters. Suppress any kind of votes from people who they think will not go for the far-right, promote the interests of the wealthy program. Let me give them their credit. I think they actually believe that this country would be better if the wealthy and powerful had more control over all the decisions.â
He continued, âHistory has proven that when we expand the rights to vote and more people vote and when all points of view and background and perspective brought together, we make better decisions. Thatâs one of the secret strengths of America. So we need to expand access to voting. Everybody who is an American citizen ought to be automatically registered to vote. We ought to have voting on weekends instead of on just Tuesday, on a workday. We ought to have more absentee voting. There is no record of voter fraud, one or two little cases every once in a while. We ought to bring everyone into the voting booth and have everyone taking part in helping to guide this nation.â

CNNâs Sellers: Not About âSomebody Calling You N*â â Itâs About Ron Johnsonâs Role in Systemic Racism
Former South Carolina state representative and CNN political analyst Bakari Sellers said Monday on âAnderson Cooper 360â that Sen. Ron Johnsonâs (R-WI) role as a lawmaker made his comments more concerning than if he had used the ân-word.â
In a soundbite from âThe Joe Pags Show,â last week, Johnson said, âIâm also criticized because I made the comment that on January 6, I never felt threatened because I didnât. And mainly because I knew even though those thousands of people there were marching on the Capitol were trying to pressure people like me to vote the way they wanted me to vote. I knew those are people that love this country, that truly respect law enforcement, would never do anything to break the law. So I wasnât concerned. Had the tables been turned âthis could get me in trouble â had the tables been turned and President Trump won the election, and those were tens of thousands of Black Lives Matter and Antifa protesters, I might have been a little concerned.â
Sellers said, âYou know when people are making racist comments, the first thing they want to push back with is simply say, you know, âYou canât play the race card,â but itâs our job to call it out. Iâm not surprised, and I am not disappointed anymore. Nothing about this is new. This is as American as American can be, but Iâm troubled because this coming from the highest part of the land. This is coming from the United States Senate, the United States Congress.â
He continued, âRacism in this country is a power construct. People like Ron Johnson have the power and the ability to implement racist policies even when theyâre ignorant to the fact that what they are doing is racist. This is not about somebody calling you n*. I get called that enough in my Twitter comments. I get called that in my messages when I leave CNN every single day. Itâs not about that. Itâs about something more than that. Itâs about the systemic oppression. Itâs about the systemic racism and people like Ron Johnson who play a role in it and are so ignorant to the fact to the role they play that they sit there and simply turn their back and say donât play the race card.â
Sellers added, âEither youâre using racism as political currency, which is cowardice, or you so simply are ignorant and do not know the language youâre using is racist and hurtful.â
He concluded, âJust think about Ron Johnson being more sympathetic to cop-killers and anti-Semites and people carrying Confederate flags than Black folk protesting. But it not just about Ron Johnson. Thatâs what Iâm trying to tell folk. When we talk about systemic oppression, imagine the Ron Johnson that works at Wells Fargo, who is your loan officer and looks at you as less valuable than a white guy who comes in there. Or imagine Ron Johnson as your professor or teacher who looks at you as less intelligent. Imagine Ron Johnson as a police officer that pulls you over on the side of the road who thinks youâre more of a danger than a white boy. See, that is what weâre talking about when we talk about this systemic injustice. Ron Johnson creates the laws. We got to call it out and push back.â
