3 South Carolina officers sentenced in FBI fake cartel sting

Three more ex-South Carolina law enforcement officers have been sentenced to federal prison following an FBI operation in which agents posed as Mexican drug cartel members.

A U.S. judge in federal court in Columbia sentenced Carolyn Colter Franklin, 64, a former Orangeburg County deputy; Allan Hunter, 52, a former Springfield police officer; and Nathaniel Miller Shazier, III, 29, a former Orangeburg County deputy, on charges of conspiracy to defraud, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of South Carolina announced Monday.

The three are the last of six Orangeburg County officers to be sentenced in the undercover sting, in which prosecutors have alleged the officers thought they were protecting Mexican drug dealers, but were really communicating with FBI agents posing as the cartel members. The operation occurred from December 2018 to March 2019.

FBI wiretaps and videos showed the officers agreed to use patrol cars in uniform and accept payment to "guard" fake truckloads of drugs they were told were traveling through Orangeburg, officials said. Prosecutors said some officers also conspired to create fraudulent documents for nonimmigrants in exchange for bribes.

Franklin received five years and one month in prison, Hunter got five years and three months in prison and Shazier, was sentenced to three years and 10 months in prison. The defendants were all also ordered to complete three years of supervised release.

Ex-MLB pitcher Frankie De La Cruz dead at 37

Frankie De La Cruz, who was among the key prospects traded by the Detroit Tigers to the then-Florida Marlins for Miguel Cabrera in 2007, died of a heart attack on Sunday. He was 37.

De La Cruz’s Dominican Winter League team announced the right-handed pitcher’s death. The Detroit News first reported the cause of death.

"We wake up with sadness after learning the terrible news of the loss of our Eulogio ‘Frankie’ De La Cruz," Toros del Este said in a statement. "Our condolences to his family and friends for this terrible loss. May his soul be at peace."

Detroit signed De La Cruz out of the Dominican Republic when he was 17. Six years later, he was a part of a blockbuster trade that helped the Tigers land Cabrera.

He, Dallas Trahem, Burke Badenhop, Cameron Maybin, Andrew Miller and Mike Rabelo were traded to the Marlins for Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis.

"He was one of those guys that could really light up a clubhouse. And he had quite an arm," Matt Walbeck, De La Cruz’s former minor league manager in the Tigers’ organization, told The Detroit News. "He threw really hard, straight over the top with a four-seam fastball that touched 100 mph. When he was on, he was fun to watch."

I see it more like this -

Trump says "vax is safe, effective, and good so go get one."

Dems - "OMG Trump wants everyone to get the vax it's poison!!! Don't get the vax"

Trump supporters who think for themselves and don't do what anyone tells them just because they are told to do it still do not take the vax.

So.. I see a win on this for less vax getting injected into the population imho.

Randy Tillman, longtime NFL coach and ex-Washington linebacker, dead at 75

Rusty Tillman, who spent eight seasons in the NFL as a linebacker, was an assistant coach and a head coach in the XFL’s first run in 2001, died Sunday. He was 75.

The Seattle Seahawks, where Tillman held several roles – including defensive coordinator from 1979 to 1994, announced Tuesday he had died.

"He really was an incredible special teams coach," former Seahawks coach Paul Moyer said. "He was a fantastic motivator, he really made you feel special teams were incredibly important. He had great ideas. He was just a really good fundamental coach. He would challenge you like nobody's business, it didn't matter if you were an All-Pro or a rookie. What I learned from him was you don't want to be too negative, you want to encourage guys to make good plays, not belittle them for the bad ones… Rusty made it positive, and because of that, players busted their tails for him on special teams."

"Rusty was one of the great special teams players of all time when he was with Washington. He was a legend. He was one of the best motivators and is one of the greatest special teams players and coaches of all time."

The cause of his death was unclear.
