AGPS car tracker helped legal authorities locate and arrest Robert Aaron Long, the man suspected of killing eight Atlanta massage parlor workers yesterday. Long has confessed to the killings.
After officers with the Cherokee County sheriff gave local media an image of Long, Long's parents contacted investigators. His parents said that his car had a GPS tracker monitoring its movements, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
It's unclear why the tracker was on Long's vehicle or whether he knew about it, Cherokee sheriff's spokesman Jay Baker told the publication. Baker said that the GPS helped police quickly apprehend the suspect.
The Georgia State Patrol and Crisp County Sheriff's Office apprehended Long nearly 150 miles south from where the shootings occurred. Legal authorities forcibly stopped his vehicle, a Hyundai, using a pursuit intervention technique (PIT).
In the PIT maneuver, a police vehicle pushed Long's car to make it uncontrollably skid sideways. Long then stopped his car, and police arrested him without further incident. He is being held in the Crisp County jail.
Police reportedly found a 9 mm firearm in Long's car. He had purchased it from Big Woods Goods, a local firearms dealer. State laws allowed him to acquire the gun immediately after passing a background check.
The first of three deadly shootings occurred around 5 p.m. on Tuesday at Young's Asian Massage. Two people died at the scene. Three others were taken to hospital, where two of them died.
The second shooting occurred near 5:50 p.m. inside Gold Spa. Police found three women dead from gunshot wounds while responding to a report of a robbery in progress at the spa.
While on the scene, officers received a call about shots fired at Aromatherapy Spa across the street. Inside, they found a woman who had been shot dead.
Four of the victims have been identified: 33-year-old Ashley Yaun, 54-year-old Paul Andre Michels, 49-year-old Xiaojie Yan and 44-year-old Daoyou Feng. The others have not yet been publicly named.
Long has confessed to the shootings. He claimed they were not racially motivated, despite the fact that most of his victims were Asian women. Instead, Long blamed the shootings on a possible sex addiction issue.
"He apparently has an issue, what he considers a sex addiction,and sees these locations as something that allows him to go to these places and it's a temptation for him that he wanted to eliminate," Baker said.
In a Wednesday press conference, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said Long wanted to go to Florida to potentially carry out more shootings. Police believe he wanted to target "porn industries" in the states.
Long's social media history revealed a heavy involvement in Christianity. The Crabapple First Baptist Church that he attended in Milton, Georgia took down its website and social media accounts shortly after the murders.
Asian leaders have connected the shootings and a recent nationwide spike in anti-Asian-American hate crimes with former President Donald Trump's rhetoric blaming China for the COVID-19 pandemic.

Suspect had been treated for sexual addictionSheriff Frank Reynolds of Cherokee County, where the Acworth shootings took place, told reporters Long "made indicators that he has some issues potentially, sexual addiction and may have frequented some of these places in the past."
Reynolds said those issues could be the motivation behind the shooting.
A law enforcement source said the suspect was recently kicked out of the house by his family due to his sexual addiction, which, the source said, included frequently spending hours on end watching pornography online.
According to an incident report from the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, a 911 caller said the suspect could possibly be his son and "does have a tracker on his phone." Another anonymous caller to 911 told dispatch the suspect was "kicked out of his parents' house last night," adding that he "was emotional," the incident report says.
It is not clear whether the businesses affected were places of sex work. During a news conference on Tuesday, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms stated the businesses were "legally operating" and had not previously been on the Atlanta Police Department's radar.
"We are not about to get into victim blaming, victim shaming, here. As far as we know in Atlanta, we have not had any 911 calls from that location. I believe one minor call on someone stealing some keys," Bottoms said. "So we don't know additional information about what his motives were, but we certainly will not begin to blame victims."
Tyler Bayless said he shared a housing unit with Long at Maverick Recovery, a rehab facility in Roswell, Georgia, between August 2019 and January or February 2020. He said that most residents were suffering from drug or alcohol addiction, but Long was being treated for sex addiction.
"It was something that absolutely would torture him," Bayless said. He said Long was a "deeply religious person – he would often go on tangents about his interpretation of the Bible," and was distraught about his addiction to sex.
Bayless said that on multiple occasions during his stay at the facility, Long told him that he had "relapsed" and "gone to massage parlors explicitly to engage in sex acts."
After hearing Long was the suspect in the shootings, Bayless said he was shocked that his former roommate would do such a thing.
Mason Clements, who is listed as the registered agent at Maverick Recovery in business filings, said in a text message that "I am unable to comment on any client past, present or future due to confidentiality agreements."
Another former roommate of Long's also told CNN that Long had been in rehabilitation for sex addiction, and that in summer 2020 he had lived with Long at a transition house for people leaving rehab, though he declined to name the facility or divulge the state where it's located. He said he had not spoken to Long "in a long time."
He recognized Long from the surveillance footage disseminated by authorities, he said, and Cherokee County dispatch records indicate the ex-roommate called police Tuesday night.

Nico Straughan, 21, who went to school with Long, described him as "super nice, super Christian, very quiet" and said that in high school Long brought a Bible to school every day and would walk around with it in his hands.
An anonymous former classmate of Long's told The Sun: "I led worship with him at our FCA club a few times my sophomore year, he played cajón and I sang and played guitar.
"He seemed very quiet, and he was a huge Christian, I'm pretty sure he was also in band.
"It's very awful news. It makes me sick to my stomach to know that someone like him did this awful thing.
"I don't recall him ever being with a female, it's the first I've heard about that [him being a sex addict], so that's very crazy.
"It's very sad that he turned into this. I'm praying for the families that lost loved ones because of his awful actions."
A second former classmate added: "It's just unbelievable that I went to high school and graduated with someone that could kill eight people.
"It makes you wonder if he's always thought about that.

As more details emerged about the sequence of events that took place on Tuesday afternoon, Long's other fascination - guns - was revealed.
"Pizza, guns, drums, music, family, and God. This pretty much sums up my life. It's a pretty good life," stated a tagline on an Instagram account believed to be Long's, reported the Daily Mail.
