That is kinda how this all's been goin', in a meta sense.
It's one thing to be led through something with your hand held.
It's another thing to earn it.
One my motivators is:
WE HAVE A DEADLINE!
IF IT'S HANDED TO US, WE LOSE!

It's less a question of "does it work", though.
I'll generally think of it like a line between knowledge and understanding.
You can know all sorts of things and not understand anything about them.
Likewise, you can understand how to drive a car, but that doesn't mean you have any clue about the physics or engineering.
The more knowledge you simply hand someone, the longer it will take before they can understand the knowledge.
If you give 'em a little, they'll have fuller understand as they go along.
Either way "works"… just a matter of style.
