WATCH OUT: Senate Confirms Anti-Religious Bigot Becerra to Lead HHS

On Thursday, the U.S. Senate narrowly confirmed Xavier Becerra as secretary for Health and Human Services (HHS), 50 to 49. Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) joined the Democrats in voting for Becerra. Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii), who would almost certainly have voted for Becerra, was absent.

Becerra’s confirmation sends a chilling message to pro-life Americans and Americans of faith. Yet conservatives aren’t taking it lying down. As soon as the Senate confirmed Becerra, Republicans and conservative groups announced that they would keep up the pressure to fight for the religious liberty Becerra threatens.

Becerra has no medical experience, but he has a long track record of promoting leftist social issues and silencing those who disagree. As California attorney general, Becerra continued the prosecution of pro-life journalist David Daleiden (after Kamala Harris began it). Becerra also vigorously defended a California law that would have forced pro-life pregnancy centers to advertise abortion — before the Supreme Court struck it down. Becerra also targeted the Little Sisters of the Poor after the Trump administration provided an exemption for the nuns the Obamacare contraception mandate.

Becerra also sued the Trump HHS after the agency struck down an Obama-era rule forcing transgender ideology in health care. He also furthered Kamala Harris’s policy of demanding that nonprofit organizations turn over their donor lists, which would likely expose the donors to harassment, especially since the California attorney general’s office has previously leaked this kind of donor information.

After Becerra’s confirmation, conservatives girded their loins to face the threat.

“The Senate has just narrowly confirmed an extremist, Xavier Becerra, to serve as Secretary of Health and Human Services,” Kristen Waggoner, general counsel at Alliance Defending Freedom, which represented the pro-life pregnancy centers before the Supreme Court in a case against Becerra, said in a statement.

“From his new role, we expect Mr. Becerra will continue his attack on the civil liberties of those with whom he disagrees. However, his confirmation will not stop ADF from our steadfast commitment to advocate for religious liberty, free speech, the protection of life, and parental rights, even if it means meeting him once again at the U.S. Supreme Court,” Waggoner added.

Canadian Authorities Made Effort to Share Huawei CFO’s Phone Passcodes With FBI, Defense Says

Canadian authorities made a concerted effort to covertly share Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou’s phone passcodes with the FBI, a lawyer representing the executive said on Thursday.

Extradition hearings against Meng resumed on Thursday, with the executive’s defense team arguing that misconduct on the part of Canadian authorities is in line with the "second branch" of abuse of process.

During the arrest at Vancouver’s International Airport, Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) agents sealed the executive’s mobile devices in special bags, designed to prevent remote wiping, and transferred it to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) but not before a border agent obtained the passcodes to the phones from Meng and placed them in the bags.

“Why would you need the passcodes,” Defense attorney Tony Paisana asked British Columbia Supreme Court Justice Heather Holmes, elaborating that the bags were not to be unsealed before the transfer.

“That context, coupled with the timing, minutes before she’s about to be turned over to the RCMP, we say indicates that the purpose of this act – the compulsion of her passcode – would be to ultimately share it with the one party that would care, the FBI,” Paisana said.

In earlier hearings, Canadian officers testified that the passcodes to the Huawei executive’s phones were obtained just moments before her arrest. CBSA officer Scott Kirkland told the British Columbia Supreme Court in October 2020 that he placed the passcodes to the phones – in violation of procedure – in error. Paisana told the court it is his belief that Kirkland was “untruthful” in his testimony.

The defense attorney also rejected the notion that the agents were inexperienced or made trivial errors, saying the officers in question had previously participated in the extradition process and their internal discussions indicated they were knowledgeable about the mandate they possessed. Additionally, Paisana quoted earlier testimony which revealed that supervising officers ordered that their transgressions not be documented.

“The fact they didn’t do a great job violating her rights, doesn’t mean they didn’t violate her rights,” Paisana said.

Meng, the daughter of Huawei founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei, was arrested on December 1, 2018 at Vancouver International Airport during a layover stop at the request of the US government.

Meng is wanted by US authorities for her alleged role in violating sanctions against Iran. The Justice Department alleges that Meng committed financial transgressions by misleading multinational financial conglomerate, HSBC, into approving more than $100 million in transactions that contravened US sanctions on Iran from 2010 to 2014.

The arrests of Meng and two Canadian nationals - diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor – on charges of espionage in China, along with other disputes have reduced bilateral relations between the two countries to their lowest point in years.

The trial of the "two Michaels" – as the pair is referred to at home – will begin on Friday, Foreign Minister Marc Garneau revealed on Wednesday.

Both nations view the detention of their nationals by the other as political incidents.

The hearings in this extradition case are expected to conclude in mid-May.

Meng remains under house arrest in Vancouver, although she is free to traverse the region in the company of state-imposed guards outside of her 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. curfew.

Shadowy Firm Uses New York Times to Spread Disinformation About Epoch Times

The New York Times on March 9, 2021, published an article containing incorrect information about The Epoch Times prepared by a shadowy firm.

The article, authored by Davey Alba, centers around the inaccurate claim that The Epoch Times is connected to “more than a dozen sites.” The New York Times makes this false claim without providing any evidence nor stating which websites it’s referring to.

This is likely because the claim is not a result of The New York Times’ own reporting, but rather based on information that the newspaper was handed by a third party.

While the initial version of Alba’s article did not reveal the source of the false information, The New York Times disclosed the identity of the entity in a correction statement.

In its correction, The New York Times states that the actual “source of the data” is “Advance Democracy.” (The newspaper has since also updated its article.)

The NYT describes Advance Democracy innocuously as “a research group” but fails to disclose the special interests behind the group, including Silicon Valley funding, and its founder Daniel Jones’s ties to Fusion GPS, the firm responsible for the widely discredited Steele dossier.

Jones, a former congressional staffer, founded Advance Democracy Inc. in 2018. The organization operates largely in the shadows, running a website that only states, “Advance Democracy, Inc. (ADI) is an independent, non-partisan organization that conducts global investigations to promote accountability, transparency, and good governance.”

An investigation by The Daily Caller in 2019 found that the organization’s donors “have largely been kept secret, as Jones has avoided revealing his backers.” The article also alleges that Jones “took credit for planting anti-Trump stories in the press.”

The New York Times in its correction also reveals a connection between Advance Democracy and a foreign entity named “Global Disinformation Index,” saying, “The data was provided by Advance Democracy, a research group, and analyzed by the nonprofit Global Disinformation Index, not provided solely by GDI.”

Global Disinformation Index is based in the UK. Its stated goal is to “defund and down-rank” websites it considers as containing “disinformation.” The group has admitted to working with “governments.”

The illegal sale of human placentas taken from funeral homes and medical waste plants is still thriving in China despite an increased risk of contracting contagious viruses.

The black market for human placentas in China is still thriving even if the organs do not pass checks that determine whether they contain diseases, such as HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B, news outlet The Paper reported Monday.

Many residents of mainland China believe human placentas, or ziheche, have healing properties that can help improve weak immune systems. They also believe cooking it and eating it, or processing it for use as traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), can cure cases of tuberculosis and hypovolemia and boost reproductive health.

The investigative report found that the illegal trade of placentas was prominent in three areas: Bozhou in Anhui, Pizhou in Jiangsu and Yongcheng in Henan, South China Morning Post reported.

A correspondence with placenta traders and black market insiders found that each placenta costs at least 80 yuan ($12.30).

Some Chinese e-commerce sites like Taobao also sell human placentas, with prices varying according to the baby’s sex. Placentas from boys sell for as much as $73, while girl placentas fetch up to $69.

Liu Yi, a Pizhou resident, said his family processed 130,000 fresh human placentas in 2020. The placentas were given to them by a cleaner in a hospital in Hubei.

Lin Xiu, an obstetrician from The Reproductive Hospital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, dismissed claims that the human placenta has healing properties. She also warned against using conventional cooking methods in hopes of killing any virus.

“If the mother has got infectious diseases, the placenta will also carry the virus,” the report quoted her as saying. “Conventional cooking methods can not kill those viruses. Only like the steamed disinfection used in hospitals to disinfect surgery equipment can do [that].”

“So eating fresh human placenta might possibly make you infected with diseases,” Lin added. “It’s dangerous for health.”

Facebook Says It ‘Limit’ the Reach of Groups that Break Rules

Facebook announced this week that it is changing the way it recommends groups and will limit the reach of those that break its rules.

NBC News reports that Facebook announced on Wednesday that it will be changing the way it recommends groups and will limit those that break its rules as the platform attempts to crack down on what it considers extremism and misinformation.

Tom Alison, Facebook’s vice president of engineering, said in a blog post: “We know we have a greater responsibility when we are amplifying or recommending content. As behaviors evolve on our platform, though, we recognize we need to do more.”

Under Facebook’s new rules, the site will show rule-breaking groups lower in the recommendations bar which will make them less discoverable to other users. The more rules a group breaks, the more it will increase restrictions on the group eventually resulting in the group being removed entirely.

Facebook also plans to inform possible new members of rule-violating groups that the group has “allowed posts that violate our Community Standards,” when they attempt to join the group. For existing group members, Facebook will reduce the reach of rule-breaking groups by giving it lower priority in a user’s news feed.

Facebook will also require users in charge of rule-breaking groups to more strictly police their communities, approving all posts before publishing when members continue to violate policies. If an admin or moderator repeatedly approves content that violates Facebooks rules, the entire group could be removed.

“We don’t believe in taking an all-or-nothing approach to reduce bad behavior on our platform,” Alison said in the statement. “Instead, we believe that groups and members that break our rules should have their privileges and reach reduced, and we make these consequences more severe if their behavior continues – until we remove them completely. We also remove groups and people without these steps in between when necessary in cases of severe harm.”

Dem Rep. Sanchez: Not ‘Appropriate’ for Journalists to See Inside Border Facilities Holding Children

Representative Linda Sanchez (D-CA) Thursday on CNN’s “Newsroom” that it was not appropriate for journalists to be inside centers that are housing the surge of unaccompanied children crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.

Anchor Poppy Harlow asked, “My last question is so transparency … All of our reporters down there have been asking nonstop to get into these facilities where Alejandro Mayorkas said are not meant for children. Are you concerned over the lack of transparency?”

Sanchez said, “I will tell you under the Trump administration, members of Congress were not allowed inside these facilities.”

Harlow interjected, “But that doesn’t mean anything now, respectfully congresswoman. Clearly, you were upset about that lack of transparency. Are you concerned about this lack of transparency?”

Sanchez said, “Sure. Well, again, when you ever have the numbers and the facilities appropriate for children, but because of COVID protocols, you have to have social distancing. So they are trying to process children as quickly as they can, and, no, these detention facilities at the border were not meant for children. Children are meant to be in licensed facilities. But because of the numbers and because of the social distancing that is required, they are doing the best that they can. I don’t necessarily think that it is appropriate for journalists to be inside centers that are not permanent places for children, that children are not placed there permanently. They are processed out of those facilities as quickly as possible and as quickly as the facilities will allow.”

Harlow pressed, “Some of them are being held there longer than they are legally supposed to be.”

Sanchez said, “They are doing the best they can under COVID protocols. If it were not a pandemic, I would totally understand the concern, but we’re dealing in a unique set of circumstances that are unprecedented. You can’t fault an administration that is doing everything humanly possible to treat these kids in a humane way given the limitations that they have because of COVID.”

Finland IDs Hackers Linked to Parliament Spying Attack

HELSINKI—Finland’s domestic security agency said Thursday that the cybergroup APT31, which is generally linked to the Chinese regime, was likely behind a cyberspying attack on the information systems of the Nordic country’s parliament.

The Finnish Security and Intelligence Service, known by the abbreviation Supo, said it had “identified a cyber espionage operation targeted in 2020 against parliament with the aim of intruding into parliament’s IT systems.”

The agency added that “according to Supo intelligence, APT31 was responsible for the attack.” It didn’t mention China by name or the group’s alleged links to the regime in Beijing. The statement was also posted on the agency’s Twitter site in English.

Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation, NBI, said late December that it had started an investigation into suspected gross hacking and espionage attacks on the information systems of Eduskunta, the Finnish legislature. Among other things, some lawmakers’ email accounts were compromised.

Parliament has since upgraded the systems’ security features.

NBI’s Tero Muurman, who is in charge of the investigation, said Thursday his agency was probing further Supo’s allegation of APT31’s involvement. He said the breach likely aimed to “acquire information for the benefit of a foreign nation or to harm Finland.”

FireEye, one of the world’s major cybersecurity firms, and other data security firms have linked APT31 to the Chinese regime or operations conducted on its orders.

APT is an abbreviation for “advanced persistent threat,” a general term to describe an attack in which an intruder—or intruders—establishes an illicit and usually long-term presence on a network to acquire highly sensitive data.

Earlier this month, Supo said that the intelligence services of foreign powers have expanded their cyber espionage operations in Finland during the COVID-19 pandemic through either directly targeting Finnish organizations or using Finnish infrastructure.

The agency has earlier named China and Russia as being the most active countries spying on Finland.

Arctic issues is an area of particular interest to China in the Nordic countries.

When she was preparing for an exhibition at the Museum of Old and New Art (Mona), a big birthday she was about to celebrate was at the forefront of her mind.

But as she was putting together her video installations, she became increasingly aware that ageing, in particular for women, loomed as a frightening prospect.

"I'd never been concerned about my age, I had never been someone who worried about getting older," she said.

"People started to suggest that it was a scary thing to happen.

"I was also reading a lot of statistics in the news about how this demographic of older women in Australia was the largest growing demographic of homelessness it was the largest demographic of people signing on to [JobSeeker]."

How the US Military Subverted the Afghan Peace Agreement to Prolong an Unpopular War

Appointed in the final days of Trump’s presidency to remove all US troops from Afghanistan, Douglas Macgregor tells The Grayzone how military leadership undermined the withdrawal and pressured Trump to capitulate.

In an exclusive interview with The Grayzone, Col. Douglas Macgregor, a former senior advisor to the acting secretary of defense, revealed that President Donald Trump shocked the US military only days after the election last November by signing a presidential order calling for the withdrawal of all remaining US troops from Afghanistan by the end of the year.

As Macgregor explained to The Grayzone, the order to withdraw was met with intense pressure from the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), Gen. Mark M. Milley, which caused the president to capitulate. Trump agreed to withdraw only half of the 5,000 remaining troops in the country. Neither Trump’s order nor the pressure from the JCS chairman was reported by the national media at the time.

The president’s surrender represented the Pentagon’s latest victory in a year-long campaign to sabotage the US-Taliban peace agreement signed in February 2020. Military and DOD leaders thus extended the disastrous and unpopular 20-year US war in Afghanistan into the administration of President Joe Biden.

A peace agreement the Pentagon was determined to subvert

The subversion of the peace agreement with the Taliban initiated by the US military leadership in Washington and Afghanistan began almost as soon as Trump’s personal envoy Zalmay Khalilzad negotiated a tentative deal in November 2019. The campaign to undermine presidential authority was actively supported by then-Secretary of Defense Mark Esper.

In February 2020, under heavy pressure to amend the agreement, Trump ordered Khalilzad to deliver the Taliban an ultimatum: agree to a full ceasefire as a prelude to a broader peace deal, including negotiations with the Afghan government, or the deal was off. The Taliban refused the immediate ceasefire with Kabul, however, offering instead a “reduction in violence” for seven days to establish a conducive atmosphere for implementing the peace agreement that had already been fleshed out in detail. It then gave the US its own ultimatum: if the US refused the offer, its negotiators would walk away from the table.

To salvage the deal, Khalilzad agreed to the Taliban proposal for a one-week “reduction of violence” by both sides. The adversaries reached further understandings on what such a “reduction in violence” would mean: the Taliban agreed there would be no attacks on population centers and Afghan stationary military targets, but reserved the right to attack government convoys if they exploited the reduction to seize control of new areas.

Vanita Gupta, President Joe Biden’s nominee for associate attorney general, plans to sell as much as $55 million of stock in a company that's been linked to the sale of a chemical used by drug cartels in the mass production of heroin.

Gupta revealed the plans when responding to questions Thursday from Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, about Avantor Inc. Gupta's father, Raj Gupta, is the chairman of the company.

Bloomberg reports that Avantor stopped selling acetic anhydride in Latin America after the news outlet published an article on Gupta's ties to the company.

Gupta's financial disclosure shows an $11 million to $55 million stake in the company due to her family's involvement with the business.

"As a shareholder with no role in Avantor, I am not able to say whether and how much I have profited from the various parts of Avantor’s business," she wrote in the responses.

She agreed to divest in the company if she is confirmed.
