Americans Are Losing Billions Due To Internet Crime

The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) has released its 2020 Internet Crime Report which found that 2020 was a record year for both victims of internet crime and dollar losses in the United States.

791,790 complaints were logged by IC3 in the last calendar year with total losses amounting to $4.2 billion. Statista's Niall McCarthy notes that the most frequent internet crimes recorded in 2020 were phishing, non-payment/non-delivery scams and extortion. Business Email Compromise schemes were the costliest internet crimes last year with adjusted losses of $1.8 billion.

2020 was notable for the emergence of schemes exploiting the Covid-19 pandemic with both individuals and businesses targeted. Some 28,500 complaints were received relating to Covid-19 scams with most of them aimed at the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act). They mainly involved grant fraud, loan fraud, and phishing for Personally Identifiable Information. In many cases, victims did not realize they had been targeted until they attempted to file their own legitimate claims for unemployment insurance benefits.

Another growing problem throughout the pandemic has been criminals impersonating government representatives over the phone, via email and through social media. Through charades and threats, they managed to gain both money and personal information. Scams have also emerged as the pace of vaccinations accelerated where people have been asked to pay for jabs out of pocket or to provide personal information in exchange for appointments.

Feminist Naomi Wolf: Joe Biden ‘Struggling Physically’ a National Security Concern

In an interview with Steve Malzberg on his weekly Sunday commentary show Eat the Press, progressive feminist author and former Democrat adviser Dr. Naomi Wolf expressed alarm regarding President Joe Biden’s current state of health and its implications for U.S. national security.

Addressing Biden’s health, Wolf stated that “as Americans, we would be remiss not to notice that this is a man who is struggling physically, and our national security kind of depends on our being grown-ups.” She said, “when a very elderly president is struggling physically, it’s an important national security concern” that all should be able to discuss “without partisanship.”

Wolf also discussed her regret voting for Biden, noting the serious “erosion” of First and Fourth Amendment rights under his administration.

“I was so eager to have to see the end of the Trump era that I hoped for better decisions,” she said. “What I have seen is a complete erosion of First Amendment and Fourth Amendment rights.”

In what she terms “bio-fascism,” Wolf expressed concerns regarding the far-reaching implications of curbing freedoms during the current pandemic.

“The President of the United States has no right whatsoever under the Constitution of the United States of America to tell anyone where they can go or whom they can see or to say anything about what you do in your private home,” she said.

“I’m incredibly concerned that we’re at kind of step ten of the ten steps to fascism that I identified in my book The End of America and that it’s under the guise of what I call bio-fascism that this pandemic has been used as an excuse to suppress everyone’s liberties and to really usher in a totalitarian state,” she stated.

Describing former President Donald Trump as a “racist” who “minimized” sexual assault, Wolf explains that she could never have voted for him, though, she adds, voting for Biden was equally the wrong option.

“You know there was no right answer for this election,” she said.

In November, Wolf expressed regret voting for Biden due to his support for lockdowns in his efforts to combat COVID-19.

“If I’d known Biden was open to ‘lockdowns’ as he now states, which is something historically unprecedented in any pandemic, and a terrifying practice, one that won’t ever end because elites love it, I would never have voted for him,” she wrote.

The current president’s questionable health has been a subject of ongoing concern for many.

On Friday, a video showed President Biden stumbling several times while boarding Air Force One.

Many have noted the media’s double standard in disregarding instances that call President Biden’s health into question after having sought endlessly to exaggerate instances in order to question former President Trump’s health.

Raphael Warnock Suggests Process for Buying a Gun Not Long Enough

Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) is suggesting that legal retail gun purchases do not take long enough.

Warnock was on NBC’s Meet the Press Sunday morning, and the Guardian quoted him calling for “reasonable gun reform” in response to last week’s Atlanta-area shootings.

He added, “This shooter was able to kill all of these folks the same day he purchased a firearm.”

He then ridiculed the Georgia legislature for working on strengthening Georgia’s voting laws instead of working on gun control, saying, “But right now, what is our legislature doing? They’re busy under the gold dome here in Georgia, trying to prevent people from being able to vote the same day they register.”

Warnock continued, “I think that suggests a distortion in values. When you can buy a gun and create this much carnage and violence on the same day, but if you want to exercise your right to vote as an American citizen, the same legislature that should be focused on this is busy erecting barriers to that constitutional right.”

The Associated Press (AP) noted that Gabby Giffords’ gun control group, Giffords Law Center, also reacted to the Atlanta-area shootings by pushing for a longer process for gun purchases.

Giffords Law Center executive director Robyn Thomas said, “It’s really quick. You walk in, fill out the paperwork, get your background check and walk out with a gun. If you’re in a state of crisis, personal crisis, you can do a lot of harm fairly quickly.”

The AP observed that gun controllers “say mandating a window of even a couple of days between the purchase of a gun and taking possession can give more time for background checks and create a “cooling off” period for people considering harming themselves or someone else.”

Chicago, like all of Illinois, has a three-day waiting period on gun purchases, yet the Chicago Tribune points out 567 people were shot January 1, 2021, through March 15, 2021, in the Windy City.

Jordan Reveals New Defense Agreement That Allows Free Entry of American Forces Into Kingdom - Report

The deal was signed in January and approved by the Jordanian government last month, while bypassing the kingdom's parliament in an extraordinary move. According to the kingdom's foreign minister, the agreement was “the fruit of long negotiations.”

Jordan has published a new agreement with the United States that allows free entry of American troops, aircraft and vehicles into the kingdom, Al-Arabiya reported Sunday.

According to the report, the newly published accord states that the US forces, their aircraft and ships are authorized to “freely enter and exit Jordanian territory.”

In particular, the terms of the agreement reportedly stipulates that the “US forces may possess weapons and circulate with them on Jordanian territory while exercising their duties.” It also allows American military personnel to transport and stock equipment on the kingdom's territory.

Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi was cited by The Jordan Times as saying that the latest deal with Washington does not harm Jordanian sovereignty, but comes as part of the decades-long military and security cooperation with the US. He added that the agreement does not authorize foreign forces to conduct combat missions on the kingdom's territory, but focuses purely on training and cooperation in fighting terrorism in the region.

Safadi also said the Hashemite kingdom receives $425 million in military aid from the United States annually.

According to information published by the Congressional Research Service, there were approximately 3,145 US military personnel deployed to Jordan at the request of the kingdom as of June 2020, with the aim of combatting Daesh* and promoting stability in the region. The American military presence expanded in the kingdom as part of Operation Inherent Resolve against terrorists, with the troops stationed at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base.

A report by the American Security Project cited satellite images that reportedly showed the presence of US reaper drones at other bases in Jordan, but this has not been confirmed by US officials.

Jarryd Hayne found guilty of sexual assault

Former footballer Jarryd Hayne has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman at her Newcastle home.

Hayne, 33, faced trial in the NSW District Court on two counts of aggravated sexual intercourse without consent, recklessly inflicting actual bodily harm, after he assaulted the 26-year-old woman with his hands and mouth and left her bleeding from the genitals in September 2018.

On Monday, a jury of seven men and five women found Hayne not guilty of the original two counts of sexual intercourse without consent, recklessly inflicting actual bodily harm, but guilty of two alternate counts of sexual intercourse without consent which did not have a bodily harm element.

Hayne was formally convicted and will be sentenced at Newcastle at a later date.
