Gene Drive changes not only the the individual but the linage in future generations through also changing the genetic code during spermatogenesis via the germ cells. What ever is changed in the genotype of the parent ( in this case male Y) will then be passed onward to future generations in the new code despite the phenotype of the parent. In the female ovum, germ cells are already formed during embryonic stages containing all the genetic data hence since no new ovum are produced and the number is set, the replication containing the new genetic data does not occur.

 

Creating a new species or modified one. It is not yet determined the cascade effect of changing such code may have .

My field was science but not in this discipline so here is a SWAG at itโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆ

Simple example :

Genotype ( genetic type) BB or Bb (brown eyed) persons genes will be changed to bb (blue eyed) in future generations. Only a recessive b gene of the two available b's will be passed now. The BB or Bb combination is gone in the parent. The recessive gene will be driven forward having replaced the possible B. Despite the parent still displaying BB or Bb (brown eyes) phenotype( physical trait). If mapped correctly any trait can be replaced and pushed forward or "driven" into the on going generations. Adaptation or manipulation in a test tube. This is an over simplification.

 

In simple terms โ€ฆBE CAREFUL WHAT YOU CHANGE โ€ฆ. NATURE CAN BE A JEALOUS ADVERSARY.

 

Having some knowledge is good.

Having most of the knowledge is bad because until you have all the knowledge available folly is only one mistake away.

 

Somethings are not reversible. Once a certain amount of humanity is lost, to re-obtain it without much strife could prove impossible.
