A former federal prosecutor, Glenn Kirschner, has launched a campaign to force “every business in America” to take a pledge that states, in part, that “The 2020 presidential election was free and fair, and produced accurate, reliable results.”

Any American business refusing to take this pledge, regardless of their own personal beliefs, will presumably be subjected to the cancel mob.

New Jersey Halts Reopening, NYC Asks Cuomo To Do The Same, As Mutant COVID Spreads

In an abrupt reopening U-turn, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has just decided to halt the Garden State's reopening plans as its total case count surges to become the highest in the US. The decision follows an announcement on Friday that capacity at gyms, restaurants, hair/nail salons and other "recreational" businesses would be raised to 50%. The number of people allowed at outdoor gatherings has also doubled to 50 from 25.

However, during an appearance in CNN Monday morning, Murphy proclaimed that the state "won’t be opening further capacities for some time now." His remarks applied to "further reopenings," meaning that he won't roll back these new measures introduced Friday. Murphy cited the growing presence of certain COVID "variants" - ie mutated strains believed to be more infectious or more virulent - as his reason for pausing the reopening.

Murphy added that "we want to do this safely and responsibly, we don’t want to have to go back."

Bombing of government office in China kills at least five, including suspect

An explosion, believed to be a deliberate bombing attack, has rocked a community committee office outside China’s southern city of Guangzhou.

The blast occurred in the village of Mingjing, located on the northern outskirts of Guangzhou, early on Monday. Five people, including the suspect, have been killed, with five more injured, local police said.

“All the injured have been sent to hospital for treatment and the case is under further investigation,” police said.

A graphic video circulating online shows firefighters working at the badly damaged building. At least two bodies can be seen laying on the floor with blood splatters seen on the walls of the office.

The suspected perpetrator has been identified as a 59-year-old local man surnamed Hu. It was not immediately clear whether the explosion was a deliberate suicide bombing attack or the suspect didn’t plan to fall victim to his own attack.

Former Scottish ambassador Craig Murray facing prison over reporting of defence case in Alex Salmond trial

Former Scottish diplomat Craig Murray faces possible imprisonment after he lost a contempt of court case over his coverage of the Alex Salmond trial in 2020. His legal team is preparing an appeal to the Supreme Court.

Former UK ambassador to Uzbekistan and RT contributor Murray faces a maximum sentence of two years in prison and an unlimited fine if his contempt of court ruling is upheld.

Murray sat in the public gallery when he attended two days of a trial against the former first minister of Scotland Alex Salmond, who was cleared of 13 sexual assault charges made by nine women following a 2020 trial at the High Court in Edinburgh.

Virtual contempt of court proceedings were held at the High Court of Justiciary, Edinburgh, before Lord Justice Clerk Lady Dorrian on Wednesday, during which the court argued that information published on Murray’s blog could have led to the identification of the women involved in the Salmond trial, in breach of a court order and potentially influencing the jury’s decision.

Arizona Senate GOP to conduct full hand recount, machine audit of 2020 election results in Maricopa County

'We are negotiating final details on the execution of the audit'

In a news release posted on the group's website last Thursday, the state Senate's Republican caucus announced that it had selected a forensic team to conduct the audit and is now finalizing details on how the review would be executed.

"As thousands of our voters continue to call for a thorough audit of the 2020 election in Maricopa County, I am pleased to report we have narrowed it down to a preferred forensic audit team. We are negotiating final details on the execution of the audit and hope to have an announcement soon," wrote Senate President Karen Fann in the news release.

"We've been reaching out to experts on election processes in Arizona and around the nation and hope to have the best and brightest involved in the audit," she continued, noting the audit "will be broad and detailed."

She further specified that the review will include, but is not limited to, "testing the machines, scanning the ballots, performing a full hand count and checking for any IT breaches."

Republicans in the Senate had been pushing for months for a "full forensic audit" of election results in Arizona's largest county, citing concerns among citizens over the integrity of the election. On Feb. 26, the audit was greenlit after a judge granted the state Senate access to ballots and tabulation machines.

According to the Arizona Republic, the county board of supervisors had "argued the ballots were secret and the machines need to remain secure" in fighting a subpoena issued by Senate Republicans. But Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Timothy Thomason determined in his Feb. ruling that the Senate subpoenas were "legal and enforceable."

Throughout the process, Senate Republicans have insisted that a full review is necessary to restore trust in the state's election system. The Arizona Republic noted that two smaller audits of county election equipment were released last month, reportedly showing no evidence of malicious software or incorrect counting.

"When all the work is done, there will be a full report for the Senate and County to review. Our voters expect this audit, and it can be a big step in returning trust and confidence in our election process," Fann concluded.

But Biden’s claim that no one from his family worked in the Obama administration is patently false.

At age 26, Biden’s niece Casey Owens worked at the Treasury Department as a Special Assistant to the Senior Coordinator for China in the Obama administration.

She wielded considerable influence over the direction of U.S.-China relations between 2009 and 2011, as she described her team as “advising” former Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and responsible for “coordinat[ing] the priorities within the agenda for the Dialogue” and “spearhead[ing] the negotiations of proposals.”

What’s more, an unearthed cable reveals Owens was part of the elite Strategic and Economic Dialogue II planning trip to Beijing as part of an economic with senior State and Treasury officials. And despite being out of the administration for five years, she attended the Obama administration’s final state dinner.

Similarly, another niece of Biden, Missy Owens, worked at the Department of Energy as a Deputy Chief of Staff from 2009 to 2011. There, she “oversaw and coordinated strategic interaction with the White House, Cabinet agencies, Members of Congress, business leaders and interest groups and acted as a primary point of contact for Agency leadership.”

And in early 2011, Owens was promptly promoted to Chief of Staff to the Deputy Secretary of Commerce.

Valerie Biden Owens, the former veep’s younger sister, was also a presidential nominee for the position of Alternate Representative of the United States to the General Assembly of the United Nations.

CBP Admits Release of Migrant Families Without Court Date, Downplays as Normal

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials admit they release certain migrants without issuing a Notice to Appear before an immigration court on a specified date. The official, however, said this is not a “change in policy.”

Breitbart Texas’ Randy Clark, a retired U.S. Border Patrol agent with 32 years of service, first revealed on Sunday that CBP officials notified Border Patrol agents to begin releasing migrant families without a Notice to Appear. Breitbart confirmed the directive with two officials operating under the umbrella of CBP.

Clark quoted a CBP official saying, “This is insane, it is another pull factor that will overwhelm us … We are creating another entirely different class of aliens we will have to deal with years from now. We will never find most of these aliens once they are released.”

Breitbart reached out to CBP officials for confirmation of the new policy and additional information about its implementation.

The official confirmed they are releasing some migrant families without issuing a court date but claimed, “there is no change in policy.”

Retired Agent Clark responded to the statement, saying, “This is completely unprecedented. Never, in my 32 years as a Border Patrol agent have we had a policy to release migrants without issuing a court date and Notice to Appear.”

“This is what enters the migrant into the alien registration system and starts the ball rolling for their removal if they do not qualify for asylum,” Clark explained. “Without a Notice to Appear, we are depending on the migrant’s word that they will self-register with the court near their destination city.”

In some cases, families are placed in removal proceedings further along in the release process rather than while they are at the border patrol station. Sultana, an acolyte of former Labour leader and fervent socialist Jeremy Corbyn, wrote on social media late Saturday night that the only way to fight racism is through the adoption of “internationalist socialism”.

The 27-year-old MP went on to share an article she penned in Tribune Magazine in January, in which she wrote: “Racism in society isn’t a glitch, it’s a feature. It’s functional to the key driver of our economic system: the accumulation of capital. This, rather than meeting human need, is fundamental to capitalism. And it is why racism is embedded in its social relations.”

“This racism isn’t incidental. It’s central to capitalism — both its history and in the present day,” she claimed.

“The wealth that enriched the British Empire and established it as a global superpower meant the murder, destruction, and brutalisation of people across the world. Millions died and civilisations were destroyed. The perpetrators of these crimes had to believe that what they were doing was justified,” she suggested.

Sultana concluded by quoting directly from the author of the Communist Manifesto, Karl Marx, writing: “There is an old socialist slogan, ‘workers of the world, unite!’ It’s not a relic from history, it’s an injunction for today. Mexico Deploys 8700 Troops to Cut Migrant Traffic to U.S. Border

Mexico deployed 8,715 soldiers to stop the flow of migrants to the U.S. border, according to new federal disclosures. The move comes as U.S. immigration authorities struggle to absorb the rising number of Central American migrants entering that country.

During a news conference, Secretary of Defense Luis Cresencio Sandoval said the military set up 347 immigration checkpoints in Mexico along three main routes (Gulf, Center, Pacific). According to Sandoval, military forces had already “rescued” 12,905 migrants in March. Sandoval did not specify if the migrants were simply apprehended or if they were being held involuntarily by human smuggling organizations.

Sandoval’s announcement comes at the same time that U.S. President Joe Biden announced a diplomatic delegation to Mexico to discuss the ongoing immigration crisis.

After experiencing the start of a surge in migrants, Mexico deployed close to 1,000 National Guardsmen and members of the National Immigration Institute to its southern border in January. That move has proven largely inconsequential since migrants continue to reach Mexican northern states like Tamaulipas and Nuevo Leon. In recent weeks, authorities in Mexico raided hotels and stash houses. Officials also stopped large groups of migrants stuffed in tractor-trailers.

A U.S. diplomatic delegation is expected to visit Mexico City on Tuesday for meetings focusing on the rising number of Central American migrants arriving at the U.S. Border.

The situation led to Border Patrol agents being forced to release migrants without a court date due to overcrowding at the detention facilities.

Acer has been the target of a REvil ransomware attack, with the attackers demanding $50 million from the company to decrypt the data and not leak sensitive information on the web. This makes it the ransom demands ever made by a ransomware group.

The REvil ransomware group is one of the most notorious hacking groups out there. The same group is also responsible for the Dairy Farm hack and its $30 million ransom demand. Acer is the world's sixth-largest computer maker, so the record high ransom amount should not come as a surprise.

Acer Was Offered a 20% Discount on the Ransom Amount

The ransomware group revealed on the dark web last week that they had breached Acer's servers in early March and decrypted their back-office files. The breach has not affected Acer's production systems in any way. It also did not prevent the company from posting its financial results on March 17.

However, since REvil has hacked Acer's back-office network, they can access sensitive files like bank balances, bank communications, and financial spreadsheets. They have posted screenshots on the dark web of the files they have access to as proof.

BleepingComputer was also able to access the chats between an Acer representative and the attackers. The Acer negotiator initially expressed shock at the massive $50 million ransom demand. On their part, the ransomware group had offered Acer a 20% discount if they made the payment by March 17, though that did not happen.

REVEALED: Nearly 1,000 unaccompanied children have been held at the border for more than 10 days

Nearly 1,000 unaccompanied migrant children have been held by border patrol agents for more than 10 days as the Biden administration scrambles to manage the growing humanitarian and political crisis at the US-Mexico border.

A total of 823 unaccompanied children were held at US-Mexico border facilities for more than 10 days - more than a fourfold increase over the last week, according to an internal Department of Homeland Security document leaked to Axios.

Children are not supposed to be held in border patrol custody for more than three days. As of Saturday 2,226 children had been held in custody for more than five days and 823 for more than 10 days.

The number of unaccompanied migrant kids in US custody surpassed 15,000 as of Saturday as the Biden administration announced that they 'would not expel young, vulnerable children.' This is a reverse of Trump administration policy, which was to generally expel all people who tried to illegally cross the border, regardless of age.

The six men, who are being held in a detention facility in Sana’a, agreed to speak to MintPress about their experiences. They insist that abject poverty as a result of the ongoing war drove them to participate in the operation, which they said came with the promise of a $300 payout.

According to the men, the operation was carried out primarily at the Ghaydah Airport in eastern al-Mahrah. There, they joined dozens of young Yemenis recruited by the CIA for training by American and British officers on how to properly identify and describe; the use of cameras, sophisticated software programs and devices used to share coordinates; information gathering; and how to find and identify military leaders and headquarters, workshops, factories, laboratories, warehouses, checkpoints and launching sites for missiles and drones. Even the locations of the personal homes and vehicles of Ansar Allah members and other vocal opponents of the Saudi intervention were sought, according to the men.

GOP Hawks Warn against Repealing Iraq War Resolution ahead of Vote

In a little-noticed development on Friday, a House panel scheduled a vote to repeal the Congressional resolution that authorized the Iraq war.

National Review has learned that the House Foreign Affairs Committee will vote next Thursday on a measure to repeal the 2002 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) against Iraq. This resolution to eliminate the Iraq War AUMF is expected to pass, likely with the support of all of the panel’s Democrats and Representative Peter Meijer (R., Mich.).

Repealing the 2002 AUMF and the 2001 AUMF that authorized force against those responsible for the 9/11 attacks has gained widespread popularity in both parties, as a war-weary public and top politicians have called for an end to the “forever wars” in Iraq and Afghanistan. But ahead of the vote on repealing the 2002 measure, some Republicans say they aren’t convinced, warning of ongoing threats from Iran, which backs proxies and operates in Iraq.

“Repeal of the 2002 AUMF is a deeply flawed idea and a dangerous mistake given our current global threats,” Representative Joe Wilson, a South Carolina Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told National Review. “Only two weeks ago, Iranian-backed militias attacked US troops and we must have all tools at our disposal to ensure our troops can succeed in the Global War on Terrorism protecting American families at home by defeating mass murderers overseas.”

Wilson, who also leads the Republican Study Committee’s task force on national security, was referring to a recent rocket attack on an Iraqi air base that hosts U.S. personnel likely carried out by a group backed by Iran. No U.S. service members were killed in the incident, but an American contractor died of a cardiac incident as the rockets rained down.

That assault in early March followed an earlier, fatal rocket attack targeting coalition personnel in Iraq, which triggered a response from the White House.

President Biden responded with air strikes on an Iran-backed militia’s position in Syria, renewing Congressional calls to repeal what critics assert are outdated Congressional war authorizations. Since the beginning of the Biden presidency, progressive lawmakers and advocacy groups have led a push to repeal these laws, and following the airstrikes, the administration gave them a nod (though it only cited the constitution, not the 2002 AUMF, as justification for the strikes). Press secretary Jen Psaki told Politico that the White House supports efforts to replace the existing AUMFs with a “narrow and specific framework.”

• The Capitol "riot" was a mostly peaceful protest where 5 Trump supporters died, including 14-year Air Force veteran Ashli Babbitt who was shot in the chest by a Capitol police officer while unarmed.

• The BLM riots were the most damaging riots in U.S. history, costing some $2 billion in insurance payouts alone. The police, FBI and military kneeled before the "protesters" in humiliating acts of submission. The media covered-up attacks on their own reporters so they could describe the riots as "peaceful protests." At least 25 people were killed during the riots and an unprecedented deadly crime wave followed.

In January, a new group popped up on the messaging app Telegram, named after an Asian slur.

Hundreds of people quickly joined. Many members soon began posting caricatures of Asians with exaggerated facial features, memes of Asian people eating dog meat and images of American soldiers inflicting violence during the Vietnam War.

This week, after a gunman killed eight people — including six women of Asian descent — at massage parlors in and near Atlanta, the Telegram channel linked to a poll that asked, “Appalled by the recent attacks on Asians?” The top answer, with 84 percent of the vote, was that the violence was “justified retaliation for Covid.”

First Turkish Airstrikes in 17 Months Kill Eight Syrian Kurds

Turkey claims 20 targets hit

Reports of fighting this weekend in northern Syria led to a flurry of Turkish airstrikes, the first such strikes against the area in 17 months. Eight Kurds were reported killed, labeled YPG by Turkish officials.

Turkey’s operations centered on Ayn Issa and the surrounding area, which is Syrian Kurdish territory. These are places Turkey often attacks, though it is rare in recent days for them to resort to airstrikes.

Turkey has been hostile with the Syrian Kurds, as with most Kurds, for many years. Turkey has made a point to occupy much of northern Syria specifically in the name of keeping the Kurds from threatening their border.

Northern Syria to the west was seized by Turkey earlier in the Syrian war, while the US took the part further east, though since the US drawdown, Turkey similarly occupies that territory as well.

Turkey reported new fighting, and that gave way to the airstrikes against targets across Syrian Kurdistan. It’s not clear what this is intended to accomplish, but likely is just the start of new Turk attacks.

AIPAC rallies support for Senate letter calling for broader Iran deal

Hawkish senators are circulating a letter that effectively rejects a return to the nuclear agreement in its current format

AIPAC, the Israel lobby group, is calling on its supporters to urge US senators to sign on to a letter asking the Biden administration to reach an expanded agreement with Iran, effectively opposing efforts to revive the nuclear deal in its current format.

The Senate letter, led by Bob Menendez, a key Democrat, and Lindsey Graham, a senior Republican, follows a similar bipartisan push in the House of Representatives that garnered the support of dozens of lawmakers.

"Looking ahead, we strongly believe that you should use the full force of our diplomatic and economic tools in concert with our allies on the United Nations Security Council and in the region to reach an agreement that prevents Iran from ever acquiring nuclear weapons and meaningfully constrains its destabilizing activity throughout the Middle East and its ballistic missile program," a draft of the Graham-Menendez letter says.

While the document does not explicitly reject returning to the nuclear deal, it imposes demands outside of the scope of the agreement - an objection to reviving the 2015 accord which only addresses Iran's nuclear programme.

US President Joe Biden has vowed to reimplement the multilateral agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which saw Iran scale back its nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief.

But the push to return to the deal has faced difficulties with an impasse over which side should return to full compliance first.

Iran has been loosening its commitments to the pact in response to the US withdrawal from the agreement in May 2018. Former President Donald Trump had piled sanctions on to a variety of sectors of the Iranian economy as part of his "maximum pressure" campaign after nixing the deal.

The new US administration has disavowed Trump's approach, but it continues to enforce the sanctions amid the diplomatic deadlock. Iranian officials say US sanctions must be lifted unconditionally.

Border crisis: Biden now tells migrants 'Don't come' but had a different message in a 2019 debate

During a 2019 Democratic presidential primary debate, President Biden said that the United States is a country that tells people struggling under oppression or poor conditions, "You should come," as he argued for a more open asylum policy.

But now, as his administration deals with a crush of migrants on the southwestern border ‒ many being kept in poor conditions similar to those Democrats considered a scandal under the Trump administration ‒ Biden is telling migrants to remain in place.

"They deserve to be heard. That's who we are," Biden said of those applying for asylum in a 2019 debate moderated by Univision's Jorge Ramos. "We're a nation that says, 'You want to flee, and you're fleeing oppression, you should come.'" This year, as Republicans blame Biden's campaign rhetoric and policies for the situation at the border, the president has shifted and is telling migrants that they should stay in their home countries as he aims to let them apply for asylum where they are.

"I can say quite clearly don't come over," Biden told ABC's George Stephanopolous in an interview last week. "So don't leave your town or city or community. We're gonna make sure we have facilities in those cities and towns run by department of — by DHS and also access with HHS, the Health and Human Services, to say you can apply for asylum from where you are right now."

The White House was pressed on the comments by Fox News' Peter Doocy during Monday's briefing.

"Sometimes there is language that is used by some that is not including the full context of his comments," White House press secretary Jen Psaki said when asked about Biden's debate comment. "I will say that he still believes that he wants our country to be a place that there is asylum processing at the border. Where people are considered and go through a proper process who are fleeing prosecution, who should be considered for immigration status."

She added that the immigration process as it currently stands "was broken by the last administration" and the president wants to pass immigration legislation.

Biden and his administration have noted that there were significant migrant surges under the Trump administration as well. A White House spokesperson also said that "push forces," including "violence, economic hardships, corruption plus two hurricanes and a global pandemic," are driving people in Central America to the U.S.

"Yeah. Well, here's the deal. They're not," Biden said when Stephanopolous told him that migrants are saying they are coming to the U.S. because he was elected president.

Cuomo accuser’s lawyer calls on AG to end Cuomo’s ‘obvious interference’ with harassment probe

Attorney Debra Katzclaims that Cuomo is improperly involving administration lawyers

An attorney for one of the women accusing New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo of sexual harassment is claiming that the governor is interfering with a state attorney general investigation.

Debra Katz, who represents Cuomo accuser Charlotte Bennett, complained in a letter to New York Attorney General Letitia James. It follows an Albany Times Union report that the administration was offering attorneys to meet with staffers before James' office interviewed them, and even to accompany them to the interviews. Katz said she understood that the attorneys were also "debriefing" employees after the interviews.

"This is highly improper and we object in the strongest possible terms to this obvious interference with what you have stated would be a 'thorough and independent' investigation," Katz wrote.

The administration attorneys' reported involvement is part of a "parallel investigation" Cuomo's office is conducting, accoring to the Times Union. A source with the New York Attorney General's Office told the newspaper their office did not direct Cuomo's office to conduct their own probe.

Katz argued that having attorneys from Cuomo's office speak with employees could have a "chilling effect on potential witnesses or other accusers who wish to come forward but fear job-related retaliation" if they speak out. She claimed that she has already spoken to witnesses who told her that they were afraid of facing retaliation "if they refuse to cooperate with the Executive Chamber's lawyers" and felt "constrained" from speaking about Cuomo's conduct and their work environment in front of administration attorneys.

"We believe that this offer of counsel constitutes a deliberate attempt by the governor to interfere with your office's investigation," Katz said.

Katz called on James "to issue a directive to the governor to cease this highly improper practice," claiming that such a directive was "necessary to restore credibility to this investigation" and to send a message that the probe will remain "fair and untainted."

Cuomo's office told the Times Union that they have made clear to employees that they are welcome to hire their own attorneys instead of using the ones being offered.

Neither James' office nor Cuomo's immediately responded to Fox News' request for comment on Katz's letter.

Bennett has accused Cuomo of asking her about her sex life and giving her the impression that he wanted to sleep with her. Cuomo apologized, claiming he never meant to say anything offensive and "never knew at the time I was making anyone feel uncomfortable."

In an interview with CBS News, Bennett rejected Cuomo's apology.

"It's not an issue of my feelings … It's an issue of his actions," Bennett said.

"The fact is that he was sexually harassing me and he has not apologized for sexually harassing me," she added.

Heritage Foundation President Kay Coles James announces resignation from conservative think tank

James will continue to be a part of the organization's board of trustees.

Heritage Foundation President Kay Coles James said Monday that she is resigning from her post as the leader of the Washington, D.C.-based conservative think tank.

"Leading an organization that has contributed so much to the policy dialogue in this country and educated so many individuals across the globe has been an honor of a lifetime," James said in a letter to friends and family.

At the same time, the foundation released a press release announcing the resignation of the Executive Vice President Kim R. Holmes, effective April 16.

James will continue to be a part of the organization's board of trustees. She has held this role since 2005.

"When we came on board as the executive leadership team three years ago, we set several goals and told Heritage’s board of trustees that we would serve for three to five years to see them through," said James, who had been president of the organization since 2018. "We accomplished everything we set out to do. Now it’s time to let someone else take the reins."

Out of 8,200 think tanks in the world, the Heritage Foundation was ranked best in the world for having the "Most Significant Impact on Public Policy" three years in a row under James and Holmes. It was No. 1 for "Best Use of Social Media and Networks," No. 1 for the "Best Use of the Internet" and rose to No. 6 from No. 13 worldwide for "Best Managed Think Tank," according to the University of Pennsylvania's Global Go-To Think Tank Index, the press release said.

"I am incredibly grateful to Kay James and Kim Holmes for their leadership of The Heritage Foundation over the past three years," said Barb Van Andel-Gaby, chairman of Heritage Foundation’s board of trustees. Cornell University, Pursuing Partnership with China, Can’t Say Whether Beijing is Guilty of Genocide

Struggling to tamp down a faculty revolt over a joint degree program funded by the Chinese government, Cornell University won't say whether that government is committing genocide against a Muslim minority in the Xinjiang region.

China's role in the systematic repression of Uighurs is complicating the Ivy League university's efforts to jump start an educational partnership with China's Peking University. Standing in the way are the university's guidelines on "ethical international engagement," which bar partnerships with foreign groups accused of "serious legal or human rights violations."

That explains why the university, asked by the Washington Free Beacon whether the Chinese government or Peking University is guilty of "serious legal or human rights violations," dodged the question. The proposed partnership is "under review by the university," Vice Provost for International Affairs Wendy Wolford said in a statement. "The full faculty senate, among other constituents, is engaged in robust discussions about the program."

The proposed program is already the subject of controversy on the Ithaca, New York, campus, as faculty members object to an education partnership funded by the Chinese Ministry of Education. Many professors see the program as a morally dubious money grab—one administrator repeated the term "profitable" four times within one minute during a presentation about the program. Professor Magnus Fiskesjö, a Cornell anthropologist leading the charge, says it is not worth the money because it is tantamount to "legitimizing and endorsing" China's genocide of Uighurs and other human rights abuses.

The drama unfolding in upstate New York is illustrative of the growing discomfort in the United States of educational partnerships with China, which is increasingly seen as the country's top geopolitical adversary. At Cornell, vocal faculty discontent threatens not just a lucrative partnership with Peking University—which could rake in up to $1 million annually, according to one administrator—but the entirety of Cornell's multimillion-dollar relationship with China, which has raised at least $27 million for the university between 2014 and 2019.

The fate of the new partnership now hangs in the balance. Faculty members are now citing the ethics guidelines, which were written in 2019 to mollify growing criticism of Cornell's partnerships with China, Qatar, and other human rights abusers, to argue that the university policy prohibits the partnership.

Professor Eli Friedman, who studies Chinese labor rights issues, said Peking University students who expressed sympathy with Chinese workers have been harassed, jailed, and tortured by Chinese authorities—acts that Friedman told his colleagues are a clear violation of the ethics guidelines during a faculty senate meeting on March 17.

"We haven't heard why this recent behavior should be overlooked," Friedman said.

Dark Money Fuels Push to Ditch Filibuster

The left-wing group leading a campaign to have Senate Democrats eliminate the filibuster is housed at one of the left's most powerful dark money networks, business records show.

Fix Our Senate is steering a coalition of 60 progressive groups to pressure moderate Democrats to eliminate the filibuster, which requires a 60-vote supermajority to advance legislation. The group is a project of the Sixteen Thirty Fund, a nonprofit incubator managed by the D.C.-based consulting firm Arabella Advisors. Arabella's network of funds is used by the nation's wealthiest liberal donors to secretly bankroll a host of progressive initiatives.

The coalition has added dozens of groups in recent days as Democrats increase their calls to eliminate the filibuster. President Joe Biden has said he supports filibuster reform and would prefer a return to a "talking filibuster," but White House press secretary Jen Psaki said the president remains "open to hearing" other ideas. Removing the filibuster would help Democrats looking to push through a progressive agenda. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has threatened to use procedural moves to grind Senate business to a halt, should Democrats succeed.

The coalition led by Fix Our Senate is trying to drum up support by painting the filibuster as a racist tool. On Thursday, the coalition launched a nationwide, six-figure ad buy that "makes the case that the filibuster, a long favored procedural tool of segregationists, has prevented voting rights and civil rights from passing the U.S. Senate." Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.) has similarly argued that the filibuster has "deep roots in racism."
