In a regular year, food stores would be closed Good Friday, open on Saturday, then closed Sunday & Monday. Easter is 2 days.
5 days, then is not as drastic as it sounds, but it will definitely be a pain in the ass and keep people from traveling for bigger gatherings. It will be difficult to keep traditional foods fresh for Easter Monday, too, for example. Generally big family dinners on those days.
Could be Merkel's way of saying fuck you to the lockdown protesters and/or stop protester's from gathering if they were planned for Saturday.
