Iran’s Rouhani Looks to EU For Backing in Fight Against Trump Plan to Scrap Nuke Deal

 

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — President Hassan Rouhani says Iran would be willing not to abandon the nuclear deal even if the United States pulls out, providing the European Union offers guarantees that Iran would keep benefiting from the accord.

 

Rouhani’s remarks came ahead of President Donald Trump’s decision expected later this week on whether to pull America out of the landmark deal between Iran and world powers. Rouhani spoke during a meeting with officials in the northeastern city of Mashhad on Monday.

 

He says a U.S. pullout would be a “strategic mistake.”

 

He says that “what we want for the deal is that it’s preserved and guaranteed by the non-Americans” — a reference to other signatories of the 2015 agreement.

 

He added in this case “then the U.S. pullout will be ok.”

Republican SEC commissioner Michael Piwowar to retire by July

 

Securities and Exchange Commission Commissioner Michael Piwowar, a Republican, announced Monday that he will retire from his position by July.

 

“It has been an honor to serve the American people at such a respected agency and work with such dedicated and talented staff,” Piwowar wrote in a letter to President Trump.

 

Piwowar’s term as commissioner ends June 5, and he plans to retire as soon as a successor if sworn in, but no later than July 7. If there is no one to serve in Piwowar’s stead after he leaves, there is a potential for a deadlock in the agency with leadership split down the aisle 2-2.

 

“I am grateful to former President Barack Obama, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senator Richard Shelby, and Senator Mike Crapo for the opportunity to serve in this role,” Piwowar wrote. “We accomplished a great deal for the “forgotten investor” in a short period of time."

 

Piwowar was the longest serving Republican in the SEC.

Mike Pence expected to announce new sanctions on Venezuela

 

Vice President Mike Pence is slated to announced Monday new sanctions on Venezuela during a speech to the Organization of American States, according to a Pence aide.

 

The expected sanctions would be significant and have a “real financial impact,” a source told Reuters.

 

Pence’s aide also said that in the vice president’s speech, it is expected he will call for a delay in Venezuela’s May 20 presidential election, which he called “fake elections.”

 

“Maduro Regime is planning fake elections in Venezuela this month. Elections must be free & fair,” Pence posted to Twitter. “I’m speaking at @OAS_Official to strengthen our critical alliances in the Western Hemisphere & call upon undemocratic actors to step up & reform.”

 

President Trump’s administration has been considering new oil sanctions on one of the South American country’s oil services companies.

 

Pence’s expected announcement comes after oil prices hit their highest levels since 2014 on Monday.

 

President Trump’s administration has previously imposed financial sanctions on Venezuela and individual sanctions on socialist President Nicolas Maduro.
