Obama administration pulls references to Islam from terror training materials, official says

Deputy U.S. Attorney General James Cole confirmed on Wednesday that the Obama administration was pulling back all training materials used for the law enforcement and national security communities, in order to eliminate all references to Islam that some Muslim groups have claimed are offensive.

“I recently directed all components of the Department of Justice to re-evaluate their training efforts in a range of areas, from community outreach to national security,” Cole told a panel at the George Washington University law school.

The move comes after complaints from advocacy organizations including the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) and others identified as Muslim Brotherhood front groups in the 2004 Holy Land Foundation terror fundraising trial.

In a Wednesday Los Angeles Times op-ed, Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) president Salam al-Marayati threatened the FBI with a total cutoff of cooperation between American Muslims and law enforcement if the agency failed to revise its law enforcement training materials.

Maintaining the training materials in their current state “will undermine the relationship between law enforcement and the Muslim American community,” al-Marayati wrote.

Multiple online sources detail MPAC’s close alignment with CAIR.

In his op-ed, Al-Marayati demanded that the Justice Department and the FBI “issue a clear and unequivocal apology to the Muslim American community” and “establish a thorough and transparent vetting process in selecting its trainers and materials.”

Specifically, al-Marayati called for a new “interagency task force” to review the training materials — a task force including representatives of the Islamist organizations the FBI is tasked with monitoring.

Some believe the Obama administration’s Justice Department will go even further.

Dem Sen. Tammy Duckworth vows to vote 'no' on all white, straight Biden nominees until an Asian is picked

She says she would only vote to confirm a white nominee if they are LGBTQ

Democratic Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth vowed Tuesday that she will vote against the confirmation of every upcoming white nominee selected by President Joe Biden (unless they are LGBTQ), until an Asian American or Pacific Islander is put forth for consideration by the administration.

Duckworth told a CNN reporter she will vote "no" on Biden's picks until the president appoints Asian American and Pacific Islanders to high level positions in the administration.

She told the press pool, "I am a no vote on the floor, on all non-diversity nominees. You know, I will vote for racial minorities and I will vote for LGBTQ. But anybody else I'm not voting for."

The senator complained, "There's no AAPI representation in the cabinet. There's not a single AAPI in a cabinet position. That's unacceptable," adding that "President Biden will be the first president in 20 years without a cabinet secretary who is AAPI."

Duckworth, who was born in Thailand, explained that she made the decision after being insulted by a comment made by a White House official during a webcast with Senate Democrats on Monday evening, The New York Post reported.

According to Duckworth, White House deputy chief of staff Jennifer O'Malley Dillon allegedly suggested that Asian Americans should be satisfied with the fact that Vice President Kamala Harris is a part of the administration. The Post noted that "Harris is biracial; her mother was born in India and her father is black and from Jamaica."

Duckworth said that "when I asked about AAPI representation… the first words out of the staff's mouth was 'Well, we're very proud of Vice President Harris', which is incredibly insulting."

"To be told that, 'Well, you have Kamala Harris, we're very proud of her, you don't need anybody else' is insulting… last night, that was the trigger for me," Duckworth fumed.

"But multiple times I've heard that," the senator continued. "And that's not something you would say to the black caucus, 'Well, you have Kamala, we're not going to put any more African-Americans in the cabinet because you have Kamala.'"

The Democrat from Illinois said that she informed the White House this morning of her decision to reject their non-diverse candidates, and "they will get back to me."

North Korea fires off short-range missiles after warning Biden administration not to cause 'a stink'

The communist nation has thus far ignored the administration's attempts to talk

North Korea fired off two-short range missiles over the weekend, days after the sister of dictator Kim Jong Un warned the Biden administration against "causing a stink" in its dealings with the communist regime.

The Washington Post first reported on the missile tests, saying they represent Kim's "first direct challenge to President [Joe] Biden, whose aides have not yet outlined their approach to the regime's nuclear threat amid an ongoing review of the U.S.-North Korea policy."

A U.S. official later confirmed that North Korea conducted the missile tests over the weekend.

Thus far, North Korea has ignored the Biden administration's attempts to talk directly, but Kim's sister, Kim Yo Jong, issued a statement via the country's state-run news agency last week, CNN reported.

Ms. Kim's statement read:

"We take this opportunity to warn the new US administration trying hard to give off powder smell in our land: If it wants to sleep in peace for (the) coming four years, it had better refrain from causing a stink at its first step."

According to ABC News, North Korea also "recently complained publicly about a new round of American and South Korean military exercises taking place in South Korea."

Also last week, North Korea's first vice minister of foreign affairs, Choe Son Hui, issued a statement saying, "We have already declared our stand that no [Democratic People's Republic of Korea]-U.S. contact and dialogue of any kind can be possible unless the U.S. rolls back its hostile policy towards the DPRK," The Hill reported.

Former President Donald Trump famously met with Kim in 2018, establishing a hand-shake deal wherein the North Korean dictator agreed to cease his government's testing of long-range missiles.

Since then, the isolationist nation has not fired off long-range missiles, but continued to conduct short-range tests during the Trump administration.

Then, in October of last year, North Korea rolled out what appears to be one of the largest intercontinental ballistic missiles in the world during a military parade.

The commander of U.S. Northern Command, Gen. Glen VanHerck, told Congress last week in written testimony:

"The Kim Jong Un regime has achieved alarming success in its quest to demonstrate the capability to threaten the U.S. homeland with nuclear-armed ICBMs, believing such weapons are necessary to deter U.S. military action and ensure his regime's survival.

"The North Korean regime has also indicated that it is no longer bound by the unilateral nuclear and ICBM testing moratorium announced in 2018, suggesting that Kim may begin flight testing an improved ICBM design in the near future."

Gangs Target Candidates Ahead of Mexican Elections

A new wave of violence has spread across Mexico as the country approaches legislative elections in June, with criminal gangs murdering, extorting and threatening candidates as a way to strengthen their political influence.

The local prosecution office said that the judge, his eight-year-old son and a third person died last week after armed criminals opened fire at them and later burned the vehicle in which the victims were traveling.

Separately, a mayor seeking reelection in the eastern state of Jalisco was found dead inside his car. The vehicle had plunged 170 meter down a cliff, according to official reports from the Jalisco attorney’s office. Authorities first said that the mayor’s death was an accident but last week announced that they’ll investigate it as homicide.

Mexico will in June choose 500 federal congressmen, 15 governors, 30 legislatures and thousands of local officials.

In early March, the country’s Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection announced the deployment of a nationwide strategy to protect candidates from criminal organizations which have targeted politicians in order to influence the elections.

According to the Secretariat, 64 people related to Mexican politics have been murdered from September 2020 to February 2021. The office has also labeled Morelos, Guerrero, Michoacan, Sinaloa, Veracruz and Jalisco as high-risk areas where candidates are likely to be co-opted by criminal organizations.

The preventive measures include bolstering candidates’ security in high-risk states, investigating threats against them and exchanging alerts between parties and security forces.

“It is clear that, as the president said, we’ve inherited the ‘party of organized crime’; and we will not allow them to decide or threaten. We will do everything necessary to protect the candidates in this electoral process,” said the chief of the Secretariat, Rosa Icela Rodríguez.

But organized crime’s involvement in electoral processes is nothing new to Mexicans.

Mexican security firm Etellekt registered 55 homicides and 205 attacks between September 2020 and March 2021 as part of its political violence indicator. The figures still fall behind the grim numbers from the 2018 elections, classified by the firm as Mexico’s most violent elections in the past 24 years.

Medical doctor turned crystal meth dealer also received $15,000/month in disability

MIAMI – Carlton Cash (49, Fort Lauderdale, Florida) was sentenced to ten years in prison for distributing crystal methamphetamine. Cash holds an active Florida medical license.

Cash was charged and convicted of selling over 150 grams of crystal methamphetamine in Broward County, Florida over an eight-month period starting in 2019. Cash had worked as an emergency room physician until 2014, when he was declared disabled due to injuries he suffered in a car accident ten years earlier.

Cash was receiving $15,000 each month in disability payments when he purchased approximately $100,000 worth of crystal methamphetamine in the year before his arrest, and sold crystal methamphetamine to others. Besides his Florida license, public records show that Cash has held medical licenses in Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas, New York, Michigan, and Mississippi.

In December 2020, Cash pled guilty in federal court to five counts of possession with the intent to distribute crystal methamphetamine.

Federal grand jury indicts Florida couple for trafficking runaway

Miami, Florida – A federal grand jury has indicted two South Florida residents in connection with the alleged sex trafficking of a 16-year-old girl.

According to allegations in the criminal complaint, the girl was a runaway from a group home, with no place to stay, when she met the couple, Frantz Mersier, 30, of Hollywood, and Paula Barboza, 25, of Miami Gardens, on December 6, 2020.

After offering the child a couch in his house on which to sleep, Mersier took the child in and had sex with her, says the affidavit. In the days that followed, according to the court documents, Mersier and Barboza sexually trafficked the victim.

It is alleged that Barboza took nude photographs of the 16-year-old girl and posted them in on-line advertising and that Mersier and Barboza sold sex with the victim to four different men in Broward County, Florida, for $100 each.

On December 9, 2020, the victim was able to call a relative. Later that day, law enforcement rescued her.

Mersier and Barboza are each charged with one count of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking and one count of sex trafficking of a minor. Barboza also is charged with production of child pornography. They face life-time prison sentences, if convicted. Mersier and Barboza are being detained pending trial.

Ariana Fajardo Orshan, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida and George L. Piro, Special Agent in Charge, FBI’s Miami Field Office, made the announcement.

Fears of Forced Adoption

Contentious bill over child adoptions passes in Queensland Parliament despite concerns

Parliament has approved a contentious bill that will see adoption considered for children in state care who can't be reunited with their parents, despite concerns raised by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island services.

Key points:

The bill passed Parliament on Tuesday despite several concerns raised

Protection groups fear it will lead to forced adoption of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children

Minister for Children Leanne Linard said "long term stable care" would be considered "only if there is no better available option"

The legislation was introduced in response to a Coroner's recommendation that adoption be "routinely and genuinely" considered by child safety officers, following the death of Caboolture toddler Mason Jet Lee.

Children who've been under long-term care orders would have their cases reviewed after two years, and the changes would then see adoption considered — if they can’t be cared for by their parents, extended family or another suitable person.

Adoption would be a last resort for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander children.

Numerous organisations expressed alarm over the amendments when a parliamentary committee examined them — including the Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Protection Peak (QATSICPP).

"There is no doubt in my mind that these changes to the law will lead to the forced adoption of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children," said chief executive Garth Morgan.

"My confidence in the committee process has been severely undermined by the lack of consideration or acknowledgement of expert advice."

QATSICPP twice made submissions opposing the legislation, writing that adoption was a contentious issue for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

It said past experiences of state intervention resulted in extreme trauma, cultural dislocation and long-lasting negative outcomes.

'Token acknowledgement' of submissions

QATSICPP said, in its view, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children should not be adopted out under the Act at all.

Cathy Pereira, principal solicitor at the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Women's Legal Services North Queensland, also wrote a submission.

"We represent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families … [adoption] is stated to be a last resort for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and our submission is that it should not be an option at all," Ms Pereira said.

"It's not just the impact and the ongoing legacy of the Stolen Generation, but also that there is no scrutiny or oversight for adoption, and adoption does not address the underlying cause of child protection intervention."

Ms Pereira said the current model of child protection was ineffective, with much more funding needed for frontline support for vulnerable families, to prevent child protection issues arising.

"I don't feel like the issues have been addressed … really there's been token acknowledgement of the submissions raised by various community and other groups," she said.

NSW warned of funnel-web spider 'plague' as temperatures heat up following floods

Residents across NSW have been warned of a potential funnel-web spider plague due to warm weather following five days of torrential rain and floods around the state.

The Australian Reptile Park has issued a warning urging people to watch out for the emerging threat, particularly as temperatures rise over coming days.

Videos and images showing thousands of spiders escaping floodwaters have been posted online this week, with experts warning the deadly funnel-webs may be among the species seeking shelter in people's homes.

The upcoming warm weather and high levels of humidity are likely to create perfect conditions for a funnel-web spider boom in coming days.

"We're already seeing increased movements from funnel-web spiders," Australian Reptile Park Director, Tim Faulkner said.

Funnel-webs are found in damp, wooded areas, close to water.

Netanyahu announces victory, starts talking to coalition partners

Three polls show unclear results, with Netanyahu somewhere between 59 and 60 mandates for his right-wing bloc.

It is unclear if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will be able to form a government for the seventh time in his three-decade political career, according to exit polls on the three television networks Tuesday night.

Two of the three polls indicated that his bloc of Likud, Shas, United Torah Judaism and the Religious Zionist Party received enough support together with the Yamina Party of Naftali Bennett, who said during the campaign that he was ready to join a coalition with either political bloc.

The Likud won 31 seats on KAN, 30 on Channel 12 and 31 on Channel 13. Shas won 9 on KAN and Channel 12 and 9 on Channel 13; UTJ won 6 on Channel 12 and 7 on Channel 13 and KAN; the Religious Zionist Party won 7 on Channel 12 and KAN, with Channel 13 giving it 6 seats; and Yamina won 7 on Channel 12, KAN and Channel 13.

Sources in Likud said Netanyahu would try to form a government as soon as possible. Bennett's associates said they were "not in Netanyahu's pocket" and joining his government was not a foregone conclusion.

Netanyahu declared on Twitter that he had won "a giant victory." He called Naftali Bennett, who told him he was waiting for the final results and he would "act for the good of all the citizens of Israel." Netanyahu also called the other leaders in his political camp and asked them to join a strong, right-wing government.

The turnout of 67.2% was a drop of 4.3% since last March's election in which the turnout was 71.5% and the lowest of the four elections of the past two years.

The world demands its freedom back: Anti-lockdown protests sweep the globe

‘Just decent, normal people expressing their will to live without global totalitarianism.’

A weary world took to the streets this weekend to demand an end to governments’ draconian coronavirus regulations that have become an oppressive fixture of life almost everywhere.

On March 20, marking the first anniversary of coronavirus lockdowns in several nations, participants in the “Worldwide Rally for Freedom” marched in Canada, the USA, Uruguay, Argentina, Ireland, Britain, Norway, the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Croatia, Serbia, Ukraine, Japan, and Australia, among other countries, to protest lockdowns, mask mandates, and the coercive promotion of the COVID-19 vaccines. In Britain, left-wing activists clashed violently with police as they showed their opposition to a proposed new law banning public protest itself.

In the United States, protests took place across the country from Cape Cod, Massachusetts to Huntington Beach, California.

LifeSiteNews database manager Meghan Mulherin attended the rally in Hyannis, Massachusetts.

“There were about 40 people,” Mulherin said, explaining that the winter-time population in Hyannis is very small.

“We had a lot of positive reactions from people driving by,” she continued.

“More positive than negative by far! Beeping, waving, thumbs up.”

Mulherin said that there was no police presence, and in fact some of the upturned thumbs came from officers driving past.

The message of the rally was “No mandates, no masks, no vaccines.”

“The Massachusetts government is pretty mandate happy,” Mulherin said.

In Britain, thousands of protestors took to the streets of their cities or traveled to London to join the mass demonstration there. The rallies had a particularly emotional dimension, thanks to proposed new legislation, called the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, that will crack down on demonstrations. As in earlier lockdown protests, London police beat several demonstrators, and they eventually ran from a shower of bottles. In Bristol, some “Kill the (anti-demonstration) Bill” demonstrators — called extremists by Chief Constable Andy Marsh — clashed violently with police, severely injuring some of the officers.

The largest rally, which took place in London, was formed from separate marches that ultimately mingled into one crowd numbering in the tens of thousands.

One London protestor, who accompanied an icon of Our Lady of Guadalupe during the protest, told LifeSiteNews that the rally he had attended Saturday was “worthwhile.”

Biden Education Nominee Ignored Sexual Assault Allegations, Lawsuit Charges

Suit alleges Cindy Marten mishandled cases, bullied victims

Four women say the San Diego Unified School District, under the leadership of district superintendent and Biden Education Department nominee Cindy Marten, turned a blind eye to sexual assault allegations against a teacher and implied that one woman bringing complaints was engaged in a publicity stunt.

Since Marten assumed the office of superintendent in 2013, allegations of sexual assault and misconduct have plagued the district and led to lawsuits charging misconduct. A group of former students filed a lawsuit last year claiming that Marten mishandled their allegations against a former teacher, Martin Teachworth, who is accused of sexual assault.

Now, as Marten is nominated to be the number two at the Department of Education, those young women are speaking up. Loxie Gant, one of the four women who brought the suit, told the Washington Free Beacon that the district's failure to take disciplinary action "enabled a predator." Gant met with Marten and other district officials before she filed suit to discuss allegations that Teachworth sexually harassed her in 2003.

During that meeting, Gant told the Free Beacon, Marten implied that Gant was using the meeting as a publicity stunt. "Cindy Marten turned to me and said that I wouldn't have to worry about having my name in the paper after the meeting," she said. "And I kind of just stared at her, and she said, ‘You do have a lot of friends in the media.'"

If confirmed, Marten would oversee K-12 policy. Her first Senate hearing is scheduled for Wednesday morning.

Neither Marten nor the San Diego Unified School District responded to the Free Beacon‘s request for comment.

Gant said that she believes district officials covered up for Teachworth, the La Jolla High School physics teacher who allegedly groped her and other underage students over a three-decade period—and as recently as the 2014-2015 school year.

Once Again, Colorado Baker Jack Phillips Is on Trial for Being Christian

What do you do in the United States of America when a local business can’t or won’t provide a product or service you’ve requested? Speaking only for myself, I walk out the door and spend my money somewhere else. (Or at least I did, back when businesses had doors you could walk in and out of.) I vote with my wallet. If they don’t want my business, fine. That’s capitalism, and it’s been working pretty well for the last few centuries.

Or at least that’s the way it used to work. But in the 21st century, that’s not enough. These days, a disgruntled customer needs to ruin the proprietor’s life.

Colleen Slevin, Associated Press:

A Colorado baker who won a partial victory at the U.S. Supreme Court in 2018 for refusing to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple went on trial Monday in yet another lawsuit, this one involving a birthday cake for a transgender woman.

Autumn Scardina attempted to order the birthday cake on the same day in 2017 that the high court announced it would hear baker Jack Phillips’ appeal in the wedding cake case. Scardina, an attorney, requested a cake that was blue on the outside and pink on the inside in honor of her gender transition…

In opening arguments, a lawyer representing Phillips, Sean Gates, said his refusal to make Scardina’s cake was about its message, not discriminating against Scardina, echoing assertions made in Phillips’ legal battle over his refusal to make a wedding cake for Charlie Craig and Dave Mullins in 2012.

Sounds like it’s time for Colorado to open a second bakery.

If the name Autumn Scardina sounds familiar, that’s because this person has been hounding Jack Phillips for years. The same day that the Supreme Court decided to hear Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission in 2017, Scardina called to request that cake. He’s a target.

Want a Job? Get a Shot! (Ron Paul)

Mask tyranny reached a new low recently when a family was kicked off a Spirit Airlines flight because their four-year-old autistic son was not wearing a mask. The family was removed from the plane even though the boy’s doctor had decided the boy should be exempted from mask mandates because the boy panics and engages in behavior that could pose a danger to himself when wearing a mask.

Besides, four-year-olds do not present much risk of spreading or contracting coronavirus. Even if masks did prevent infections among adults, there would be no reason to force children to wear masks.

Mask mandates have as much to do with healthcare as Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screenings have to do with stopping terrorism. Masks and TSA screenings are “security theater” done to reassure those frightened by government and media propaganda regarding coronavirus and terrorism that the government is protecting them.

Covid oppression will worsen if vaccine passports become more widely required. Vaccine passports are digital or physical proof a person has taken a coronavirus vaccine. New York is already requiring that individuals produce digital proof of taking a coronavirus vaccine before being admitted to sporting events.

Imagine if the zealous enforcers of mask mandates had the power to deny you access to public places because you have not “gotten your shot.” Even worse, what if a potential employer had to ensure you were “properly” vaccinated before hiring you? This could come to pass if proponents of mandatory E-Verify have their way.

E-Verify requires employers to submit personal identifying information — such as a social security numbers and biometric data — to a government database to ensure job applicants have federal permission to hold jobs.

Currently, E-Verify is only used to assure a job applicant is a citizen or legal resident. However, its use could be expanded to advancing other purposes, such as ensuring a potential new hire has taken all the recommended vaccines.

Pentagon asked to house migrant children on MILITARY BASES. When Trump mulled the idea it was decried as ‘CONCENTRATION CAMPS’

The Biden administration has asked the Pentagon for use of military bases to house the rising number of minors crossing the US border illegally, as the people who screamed in outrage under the previous president were now silent.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told reporters on Tuesday that the Department of Health and Human Services requested to use facilities at Joint Base San Antonio and Fort Bliss, both in Texas, to house an unspecified number of minors apprehended after crossing the border from Mexico.

“We have just received this request, so I don't have much more detail than that,” said Kirby, adding the Pentagon will “analyze it and evaluate it just like we would any other request for assistance.”

With President Joe Biden quick to revoke his predecessor Donald Trump’s immigration policies – from the construction of the border wall to demanding the asylum-seekers wait in Mexico – the tide of migrants from Central America has swamped the southern US border. So large is their number, the overwhelmed US Border Patrol has begun releasing the apprehended migrants into the US without bothering to give them court notices, or in some cases Covid-19 tests.

Unaccompanied minors are a particular problem, as more than 15,000 are currently in custody while HHS has previously said their facilities can only hold 10,000 or so. Earlier this week, photos from the makeshift tent facilities in Texas made it through the information blockade that the Biden administration sought to impose on reporters, citing the coronavirus emergency.

The smugglers also said that drug cartels that control the Mexican side of the border “mandate” the use of migrant children as decoys for the drug trafficking operations.

The surge of underage migrants is exploiting a loophole in US immigration law known as the Flores Settlement, a 1997 class action suit agreement that limits how long minors can be detained by the authorities.

Afghanistan - More Dead End Proposals Seek Time To Allow U.S. Face Saving Exit

The Doha agreement between the U.S. and the Taliban includes a promise by the Taliban to not attack U.S. troops or major cities. In exchange the U.S. promised to leave Afghanistan by May 1. The problem for the U.S. is that leaving Afghanistan will inevitable lead to a new Taliban regime, likely within a few months. It would make the U.S. look weak. That is something that Washington inherently dislikes.

In early March the Biden administration launched a new Afghanistan peace initiative. It proposed to create a new interim government with participation of the Taliban and under a new constitution. The idea is to uphold some picture of normalcy that can hold for a few months while the U.S. skips out. We said that the idea was unlikely to fly:

President Ghani is furious about Blinken's letter. Other interest groups in the Afghan government also reject it. They think it is a bluff. Unless the U.S. stops the money flow to Kabul and pulls out its troops there is no need for Ghani and other to proceed.

The Taliban will also reject the proposals. They want the U.S. to leave and they feel sure that, after that, they can win the civil war and reinstall their Islamic Emirate. Their backers in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are likewise convinced that there is no need to change course.

The new U.S. proposal is a dead end.

Today President Ashraf Ghani made a counterproposal which has a similar chance to be realized:

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani will propose a new presidential election within six months, under a peace plan he will put forward as a counter-offer to a U.S. proposal that he rejects, two senior government officials told Reuters.

Ghani will unveil his proposal at an international gathering in Turkey next month, signalling his refusal to accept Washington's plan for his elected government to be replaced by an interim administration, the officials said.

"The counterproposal which we are going to present at the Istanbul meeting would be to call for early presidential elections if the Taliban agree on a ceasefire," one senior government official said on condition of anonymity.

Another Afghan government official said: "The president would never agree to step aside and any future government should be formed through democratic process, not a political deal."

A third senior official also said Ghani's proposal would include possible early elections, although he did not specify the exact time frame for the vote. The third official said Ghani had already shared his road map with Khalilzad.

…The Afghan officials said that as part of Ghani's counter-proposal, his government would ask the U.N. to closely observe the new election to ensure it is accepted by all sides.

CONTROL THE FOOD: Amazon quietly building nationwide grocery chain during the pandemic

In the middle of a pandemic that has seen businesses struggle to stay afloat, online retail giant Amazon has quietly been building its own chain of grocery stores.

Called Amazon Fresh, the first of these stores was opened to the public in Los Angeles in September last year. The company opened its 11th store on Thursday, March 10, and is working on at least 28 more stores around the United States.

Amazon’s second attempt to conquer the grocery industry

Many consider Amazon Fresh to be the tech giant’s second major attempt at getting a larger chunk of the $900 billion U.S. grocery industry.

In 2017, the company completed a $13.7 billion acquisition of supermarket chain Whole Foods. A report by Cowen and Company showed that only 12 percent of U.S. shoppers bought their groceries online in 2016, but it was expected to grow as most online shoppers were millennials over age 25, a generation that’s bound to spend more on groceries over the next decade.

The acquisition was far from a match made in heaven. While Amazon is often associated with great value, Whole Foods has higher prices due to its reliance on more expensive organic goods. At the same time, the supermarket chain lagged behind its competitors in the shift to online grocery shopping. (Related: Are we witnessing the fall of Whole Foods?)

Whole Foods cut its prices, added online ordering and implemented benefits for Amazon Prime members, but struggled to totally reinvent itself. The expected dominance by Amazon in grocery sales, both online and off, has not been realized.
