Long Beach Container Terminal Sold for $1.8 Billion

At the same time frame Morrison visited POTUS…

Hong Kong-based Orient Overseas International Ltd. said Tuesday that it will sell Long Beach Container Terminal to a consortium led by Australia’s Macquarie Group for $1.78 billion.

OOIL was the terminal operator under a lease agreement with the port, but the company was purchased last year by China’s Cosco Shipping Holdings Co. Ltd. and U.S. regulators demanded Cosco divest the terminal as part of the deal approval process.

The terminal is part of the port’s $1.4 billion Middle Harbor project that, when complete, will be largest automated terminal on the West Coast. The Long Beach port is the nation’s second busiest and along with Los Angeles port, the nation’s main gateway for trade with Asia.

The terminal sale is subject to approval by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice.

Angela Merkel:

"This mistake is solely my fault".

The German Chancellor has backed down from her Easter rest proposal. It was a mistake, she said, and apologized for the uncertainty that had arisen.

Angela Merkel now wants to rescind the "Easter break" decided at the beginning of the week. She says there were too many issues - from continued payment of wages to the situation in stores and businesses - that could not have been resolved in the short time available. "This mistake is solely my fault," the chancellor said after consultations with the state premiers that were scheduled at short notice. She added that the whole process had caused additional uncertainty. "I deeply regret that, and for that I ask all citizens for forgiveness." He said the idea had been "designed with the best of intentions." He said it was imperative to succeed in curbing the third wave of the pandemic.

According to reports, the prime ministers expressed their respect for the chancellor at the switch and emphasized their joint responsibility. According to participants, Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) said, "I have personal respect for the Chancellor's statement. It is better in the end to clear now if it is not legally possible." Ultimately, he said, the procedural processes "are also part of the problem." At the same time, Söder pointed out that the responsible ministries had still been asked the night of the Conference of Minister Presidents whether the implementation of the so-called Easter truce was legally possible.

According to participants, NRW Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU) pointed out that in the federal-state round on Tuesday night, everyone had said yes in the end. In a crisis, he said, it was good to undo problematic things. Schleswig-Holstein's Minister President Daniel GĂĽnther (CDU) expressed similar views.

Left-wing parliamentary group leader Dietmar Bartsch appealed to Merkel to call for a vote of confidence. "We finally need consistent pandemic control. This can only be done if the chancellor enjoys the confidence of the majority of parliament," he told the Funke Mediengruppe newspapers. "We now have a veritable crisis of confidence in the country's political leadership." FDP leader Christian Lindner echoed the call: "The chancellor can no longer be sure of the united support of her coalition," he wrote on Twitter. The vote of confidence is therefore "advisable."
