FBI, bomb squad, SWAT on scene of Near North Side hazmat where man died earlier, police say

Police returned to a Near North Side building Wednesday afternoon to follow up on the earlier death of a 30-year-old man and discovered a hazardous materials situation that prompted the FBI, the bomb squad and SWAT to respond, officials said.

Theodore Hilk, 30, was pronounced dead at 4 a.m. Wednesday at 240 E. Illinois St., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Detectives investigating Hilk’s death returned to the residential building about 4 p.m. and discovered a hazardous materials incident, Chicago police spokeswoman Michelle Tannehill said.

“They went back and realized they had observed a hazmat, and that’s when they called the FBI,” Tannehill said.

Sources said chemicals found in Hilk’s apartment attracted the attention of law enforcement, but one of the sources said that as of Wednesday evening, the discovery is not being declared as criminal in nature.

The Chicago police bomb squad and SWAT officers were also on the scene, where the building was evacuated.

Chicago Fire department spokesman Larry Langford said they called a Level I hazmat on the recommendation of police.

“They’re there supporting the police,” Langford said of the firefighters, adding it was not clear what kind of hazardous situation it was. “I don’t know what they’re doing down there. It could be anything from a gas leak to explosives.”

A Level I brings the hazmat unit, a squad, at least one fire truck and engine, an ambulance, a battalion chief and a hazmat coordinator.

No injuries have been reported, said Langford, who said the incident was ongoing as of 8:15 p.m.

Tannehill said they don’t know yet what caused the hazmat incident.

An autopsy for Hilk was scheduled for Thursday.

According to the website Urban Real Estate, the modern, glass and metal-throughout building at 240-280 Illinois Street has 31 floors, more than 280 units and was built in 2008.

It is attached to a Whole Foods Market, is less than three blocks from the lakefront and Navy Pier, the areas top universities and Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to the website.
