History is long, as a result, hapless leaders are many. But in regards to U.S. history, I would say that James Buchanan, the president before Lincoln is seen by historians as being feckless. His contemporaries called him dough face. History criticizes him for doing nothing to prevent the civil war. Because of Buchanan doing nothing, when Lincoln took office he was president of a country with a couple of states that had already succeeded. Talk about a rough job to walk into.
