The surface area of the sides of the hull are a huge sail area. Wind blows against the side of the ship and pushes it laterally in the water. I saw reports here yesterday that said the wind was blowing 40kts at the time.

 

Secondly that ship isn't bottomed out. It's bulbous bow is imbedded in the ground on the side of the canal at least 10 feet deep. The simple solution would be to use back-hoes to dig it out, doing a small amount of easily repaired damage to the canal wall.

 

How the ship grounded is less important to know that what cargo it's carrying.
