US military conducted 2 dozen cyber operations to head off 2020 election meddling
“Over the past year, I emphasized the importance of defending the election against foreign interference,” Gen. Paul Nakasone said before the Senate Armed Services Committee. “U.S. Cyber Command conducted more than two dozen operations to get ahead of foreign threats before they interfered or influenced our elections in 2020.” He did not name the adversaries.
Defending elections has become an enduring mission for the Department of Defense, falling mostly on Cyber Command — a significant expansion from its creation — given adversaries find the digital domain fruitful to exploit.
Details regarding these operations are scarce given their sensitivity. However, Cyber Command has been public about using its unique authorities to operate outside the U.S. to act against malicious activity.
Previously, President Donald Trump confirmed media reports that Cyber Command shut out a Russian troll farm of cyber actors who sow false or inflammatory information on the internet. Cyber Command also sent targeted messages to certain Russian cyber operatives and Russian elites believed to be gearing up to conduct operations against the elections.
According to a declassified assessment of the 2020 election released this month by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, Russia, Iran, Cuba, Venezuela and the armed Hezbollah party in Lebanon sought to conduct influence operations against the American populace. China did not engage in any activity associated with the election, the intelligence community assessed.
Nakasone said the command built upon lessons learned from earlier operations and strengthened partnerships with other federal entities, such as the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI, to ensure a secure election.
He lauded a new tool created in partnership with the National Guard Bureau across the states to allow them to share threats. The Cyber 9-Line, as it’s called, is a portal that allows states’ Guard units to pass potential threats to Cyber Command to defeat in foreign cyberspace and conversely provides Cyber Command a way to alert states of potential threats discovered during operations. Every state joined the effort prior to the election, Nakasone said in written testimony provided to the committee.

Former Queensland National Party member for Barambah Trevor Perrett charged with indecent treatment of a young girl
A former Queensland government minister has been charged over alleged indecent acts with a young girl.
Trevor John Perrett, who was minister for primary industries, fisheries and forestry in the Borbidge Coalition government from 1996 to 1998, is due to appear in court next Monday.
Mr Perrett, 79, faces 24 counts of indecent treatment of a child.
Police said a man from Petrie in Queensland's Moreton Bay region was charged with the offences on February 2.
"The charges relate to ongoing investigations into alleged historical offences," a police spokeswoman said.
The alleged offences took place in Brisbane, Toowoomba and Roma between December 1974 and January 1977.
The police investigation was led by the Townsville Child Protection Investigation Unit.
The ABC was unable to reach Mr Perrett for comment.
His parliamentary career began in 1988 when he won the seat of Barambah as an independent with support from the far-right Citizens Electoral Council.
Within months, he joined the National Party and held office for a decade before he lost his seat to a One Nation candidate.
Mr Perrett’s son Tony Perrett has been the LNP member for Gympie since 2015.

Little did they know their group had already been infiltrated and this conversation, along with more than a hundred others, was being covertly recorded.
The men in the recording are senior members of The Base, a global white supremacist group founded in the US, which is “prepping” for a race war to establish a white ethno-state.

In late November Republican Dr. Mariannette Miller-Meeks won her recount in Iowa’s Second Congressional district by 6 votes against Democrat Rita Hart.
Miller-Meeks was the 14th pickup for the GOP House in the 2020 election.
In early March, the Democrats took their first step to overturn the certified Iowa race and hand it over to Democrat Rita Hart.
Rather than taking her case to court, Rita Hart ran to the Democrat-led House to help her adjudicate her claim.
This means that the Democrat-led House can actually decide if a Democrat will be able to take a GOP Congressional seat away from a certified winner.
The Democrats currently control the House by a 219-211 margin and the Republicans are accusing Pelosi of trying to help bolster her razor thin margin by stealing the Iowa seat.
Marc Elias, Hillary Clinton’s crooked Perkins Coie lawyer is behind the effort to steal the Iowa seat.
In his brief filed on Monday, Elias explicitly asked a partisan committee of House Democrats to “exercise its discretion to depart from Iowa law” and overturn a certified election.
