On Tuesday March 22nd at around 7:45 am local time the Ever Given, become grounded in the Suez Canal. The ship had two pilots from Egypt’s canal authority aboard the vessel to guide it when the grounding happened.

The ship is owned by Japanese company Shoei Kisen Kaisha. Managed by Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement. Operated by Taiwanese shipping giant Evergreen. And registered in Panama

The ship set out from Yantian in China on 7 March, then stopped off for a day at the port of Tanjung Pelepas in Malaysia, before sailing to Suez Port in Egypt on 22 March. It was scheduled to arrive in Rotterdam on March 31st

According to FreightWaves maritime market expert Henry Byers, the Ever Given typically carries such goods as apparel, electrical equipment, tools and bicycles. Byers said the Ever Given was operating on behalf of the Ocean Alliance, the space-sharing cooperative among Evergreen, CMA CGM, OOCL and COSCO.

The Ever Given was involved in an accident in northern Germany in 2019, when it ran into a small ferry moored on the Elbe River in Hamburg. No passengers were on the ferry at the time and there were no injuries, but it was seriously damaged. Hamburg prosecutors opened an investigation of the Ever Given’s captain and pilot on suspicion of endangering shipping traffic, but shelved it in 2020 for lack of evidence,
