Lebanon PM warns of 'dangerous' chemicals in oil facility

https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20210326-lebanon-pm-warns-of-dangerous-chemicals-in-oil-facility/

Lebanon's outgoing Prime Minister, Hassan Diab, said today that experts had found "dangerous chemicals" at a warehouse at the Zahrani oil installations in the south, Reuters reported.

Diab said the country's atomic energy authority had identified the substances as "nuclear" after reviewing a report by German company Combi Lift, which Lebanon had tasked with clearing hazardous material at Beirut port.

A Combi Lift spokesman said they did not have any knowledge of the Zahrani issue.

"This needs to be discussed now and needs to be dealt with promptly," a statement by Lebanon's higher defence council cited Diab as saying after a meeting.

His comments came nearly eight months after a stockpile of chemicals detonated in Beirut, killing nearly 200 people in one of the largest non-nuclear explosions on record. The ammonium nitrate went up in flames last August after being stored unsafely at the port for years.

I Figured Out How to Free the Stuck Ship in the Suez Canal

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a35954476/stuck-ship-suez-canal-how-to-free/

Here's what we do: We winch it, off-road style. But not from land. Because the biggest winch of all is right there on the ship.

But what good is an anchor when you're involuntarily anchored already? Well, here's what we do: lower the port anchor (that would be the left, the non-grounded side) onto a barge or a sturdy tugboat. Bring it over to the opposite side of the canal. Drop it. Fire up that windlass and reel it in. I'm not sure if the Ever Given has a separate winch motor for each anchor (probably!), but if the port anchor doesn't do the trick, bring the starboard anchor over, too. If anything, that would provide even more leverage, since the chain would wrap around from the other side of the bow. We're going to scratch the paint a little. But that's what happens when you're off-roading.

Haiti Frees Most of Those Accused of Plotting a Coup

https://www.voanews.com/americas/haiti-frees-most-those-accused-plotting-coup

Fifteen people accused of plotting a coup in Haiti were released from prison Friday, 48 hours after an appeals court judge’s order.

Two detainees, a man and a woman, are still incarcerated.

According to Le Nouvelliste newspaper, the woman remains in prison because her name was misspelled in the release order. The name of the man, who is being detained at the Croix-des-Bouquets prison, was withheld. One of the lawyers representing the group, Marc-Antoine Maisonneuve, said he was doing everything possible to secure their release soon.

The judge who ordered the 17 people released agreed with Maisonneuve’s argument that the arrests were illegal because they occurred outside the parameters set out in the constitution. According to the law, arrests must be made between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., unless they occur during the commission of a crime.

The accused were asleep in their beds when they were arrested by law enforcement February 7.

Rare 1822 gold coin fetches record $8.4M at auction in Vegas

https://www.9news.com.au/world/1822-half-eagle-5-coin-sells-for-82-million-at-las-vegas-auction/edc20494-8326-4af8-b2d8-7895769099cd

The coin trading world has a new gold standard, after the only known 1822 half eagle $5 piece in private hands sold at auction in Las Vegas for US$8.4 million ($10.9m).

Douglas Mudd, curator and director of the Edward C. Rochette Money Museum in Colorado Springs, Colorado, confirmed the coin is one of three of its kind in existence and the auction price Thursday was the highest for a US gold coin struck by the US Mint.

The most expensive US coin ever sold, at US$10m ($13m), is a 1794 US “Flowing Hair” silver dollar said to be among the first-ever minted in the fledgling United States.

The 1822 half eagle $5 coin came from the D. Brent Pogue Collection and the buyer wanted to remain anonymous, said Jarrod Holland, spokesman for Stack’s Bowers Galleries, host of the public auction in Las Vegas.
