Why would the Panama canal have more traffic because of the Suez incident? That doesn't make sense.

The only logical option is to sail around Africa rather than spending weeks crossing the Indian Pacific and Atlantic oceans to go through the Panama canal.

Other canals don't act as a by-pass for the Suez.

It is normal for ships to wait to enter the canals.

Every ship usually has to have a local pilot on board to guide them through the canal.

Also think of the canals as toll booths on a highway, ships have to pay to use the canals.

Traffic has to queue up to wait for their slot/pilot to get through.

Some sections of the canals can be too narrow for ships to pass easily/safely, this means northbound ships waiting for a southbound group to get clear.
