Congress, In Five-Hour Hearing, Demands Tech CEOs Censor The Internet Even More Aggressively: Greenwald

Over the course of five-plus hours on Thursday, a House Committee along with two subcommittees badgered three tech CEOs, repeatedly demanding that they censor more political content from their platforms and vowing legislative retaliation if they fail to comply. The hearing — convened by the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Chair Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), and the two Chairs of its Subcommittees, Mike Doyle (D-PA) and Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) — was one of the most stunning displays of the growing authoritarian effort in Congress to commandeer the control which these companies wield over political discourse for their own political interests and purposes.

As I noted when I reported last month on the scheduling of this hearing, this was “the third time in less than five months that the U.S. Congress has summoned the CEOs of social media companies to appear before them with the explicit intent to pressure and coerce them to censor more content from their platforms.” The bulk of Thursday’s lengthy hearing consisted of one Democratic member after the next complaining that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Google/Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey have failed in their duties to censor political voices and ideological content that these elected officials regard as adversarial or harmful, accompanied by threats that legislative punishment (including possible revocation of Section 230 immunity) is imminent in order to force compliance (Section 230 is the provision of the 1996 Communications Decency Act that shields internet companies from liability for content posted by their users).

Republican members largely confined their grievances to the opposite concern: that these social media giants were excessively silencing conservative voices in order to promote a liberal political agenda (that complaint is only partially true: a good amount of online censorship, like growing law enforcement domestic monitoring generally, focuses on all anti-establishment ideologies, not just the right-wing variant). This editorial censoring, many Republicans insisted, rendered the tech companies’ Section 230 immunity obsolete, since they are now acting as publishers rather than mere neutral transmitters of information. Some Republicans did join with Democrats in demanding greater censorship, though typically in the name of protecting children from mental health disorders and predators rather than ideological conformity.

As they have done in prior hearings, both Zuckerberg and Pichai spoke like the super-scripted, programmed automatons that they are, eager to please their Congressional overseers (though they did periodically issue what should have been unnecessary warnings that excessive “content moderation” can cripple free political discourse). Dorsey, by contrast, seemed at the end of his line of patience and tolerance for vapid, moronic censorship demands, and — sitting in a kitchen in front of a pile of plates and glasses — he, refreshingly, barely bothered to hide that indifference. At one point, he flatly stated in response to demands that Twitter do more to remove “disinformation”: “I don't think we should be the arbiters of truth and I don't think the government should be either.”

=12-year-old boy abducted, sexually assaulted and shot in Miami

A violent sex fiend abducted a 12-year-old boy from a Miami street early Saturday morning — then sexually assaulted and shot the child, local police said.

The victim was walking on 43rd Terrace near 30th Avenue in the Brownsville neighborhood at about 2 a.m., when a man forced him into a black car, according to the Miami-Dade Police Department.

The suspect drove a few blocks away, where he sexually assaulted the boy and shot him, police said. He then forced the victim from the car and drove off, police said.

A man who was riding on a bike near the scene of the crime told a local news station that he pulled over to help the boy after he heard the child screaming.

“He was screaming. ‘Help someone, help me, please,’ ” the man, who said his name was Johnny, told Local 10.

“I bring him to the store so they can call the police for him,” Johnny added to the station. “He was conscience, then he fell on the sidewalk and said he had been shot.”

Surveillance video obtained by the station shows the boy stumbling up to a street corner while bleeding from his head before he collapsed to the ground.

Another passerby offered him water and a towel, the video shows.

Police showed up to the scene a short while later and rushed the critically injured kid to a local hospital.

Johnny, the Good Samaritan, told WSVN that he was grateful he was there to help the boy — but added the disturbing scene weighed on his mind.

“I couldn’t sleep at all that night, you know?” he said.

Texas Democrat leaks new photos of children being held at packed migrant facility: 'We're feeling the brunt'

The democratic congressman said children are being detained 'far longer' than the 72-hour legal limit

New photos have been released that show dozens of children who are packed into migrant facilities at the U.S. southern border. The eye-opening photos were shared by Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar from Texas, who said that the unaccompanied minors were detained by Border Patrol for "far longer" than the 72-hour legal time limit. After 72 hours, minors are supposed to be transferred to a Health and Human Services facility.

Cuellar appeared on CBS's "Face the Nation" on Sunday, where he revealed the packed conditions at migrant facilities. Minors are seen from wall-to-wall with no space for social distancing, and laying on the floor with mylar blankets.

The Democratic congressman said there are "groups of over a hundred individuals coming in into the Border Patrol custody" every single day. He said that it is "nearly impossible to reduce the numbers of people at the detention facilities" when there are hundreds of people illegally crossing over the U.S. border every day.

Cuellar said unaccompanied children are being moved into migrant facilities, but "at first the priority was given to young boys."

"For example, Carrizo Springs has young boys from 13 to 17," Cuellar told host Margaret Brennan. "San Diego is going to be now taking 500 of the young girls— or have taken that."

The Texas representative noted, "Out of the 5,000 plus that they have at the Rio Grande, about 65% are unaccompanied kids."

Cuellar said family units are being released into the U.S., which has caused a "burden" on the border communities. "The cities, the counties, the NGOs," he said. "We're feeling the brunt of what's happening with the family units."

Cuellar admitted that he gets more information about the current border crisis from Mexico than the Biden administration, and hasn't been in contact with Vice President Kamala Harris since November despite her being appointed to take the lead on the migrant surge.

Last week, Cuellar shared photos taken inside a U.S. Customs and Border Protection temporary surge facility in Donna, Texas. Conditions inside the migrant facilities have been described as "grim," cage-like, and "akin to jails."

Special Operations Command investigating new diversity chief's posts berating Trump, Cruz

The executive recently was hired to be the first Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer at the vast Tampa, Fla.-based command.

The U.S. Special Operations Command is investigating social media posts from its newly hired executive who spread anti-Donald Trump memes and compared the former president to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, a spokesperson told Just the News.

"We are aware of the situation, and the command has initiated an investigation," Special Operations Command spokesman Ken McGraw wrote in a Sunday email.

The executive, Richard Torres-Estrada, recently was hired to be the first Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer at the vast Tampa, Florida-based command, known as SOCOM.

"Mr. Torres-Estrada has nearly two decades worth of experience working diversity and inclusion programs and activities in federal agencies," SOCOM managers announced Friday on Facebook and Instagram. Noting that the new position dovetails with an overall plan for the command, the managers wrote: "We look forward to Mr. Torres-Estrada’s contribution in enhancing the capabilities and effectiveness of #SOF through diversity of talent, helping us recruit the best of the best."

Media sleuths quickly found, though, that Torres-Estrada had shared a number of political posts some considered to be non-inclusive.

One meme on a Facebook page that appears to belong to Torres-Estrada features a photograph of a saluting Hitler juxtaposed with a photo of Trump holding up a Bible in front of St. John’s Episcopal Church. Another meme is a photo of Trump surrounded by quotes attributed to former advisers calling Trump "an idiot," "a dope," and "a moron."

Another meme purports to be a "missing" poster for Sen. Ted Cruz, describing him as having "weird" facial hair and as having left his state "in the middle of a natural disaster."

The memes drew a flurry of critiques from SOCOM veterans and others, denouncing Torres-Estrada's posts.

"So much for non partisanship," wrote one social media user.

"If this is how you treat sitting Senators you should be removed from office," another wrote.

On Sunday, SOCOM confirmed to Just the News that the command has launched an inquiry. Officials gave no other details on the investigation, nor on the status of Torres-Estrada.

The new diversity officer previously has worked in a number of human resource posts, including for NASA, the Social Security Administration, the Washington, D.C. Metro system, and other agencies, according to what appears to be his LinkedIn profile.

Mr. Torres-Estrada could not immediately be reached for comment.
