Suez Canal: Ever Given container ship shifted from shoreline

The 200,000-tonne Ever Given ran aground on Tuesday morning amid high winds and a sandstorm that affected visibility. Specialist salvage companies were brought in to help refloat the ship.
On Sunday, canal officials began preparing to remove some of roughly 20,000 containers on board in order to lighten the load.
The canal, which separates Africa from the Middle East and Asia, is one of the busiest trade routes in the world with about 12% of total global trade moving through it. It provides the shortest link between Asia and Europe.
An alternative route, around the Cape of Good Hope on the southern tip of Africa, can take two weeks longer.

A helicopter headed to the U.S. state of Alaska for a skiing trip crashed on Saturday killing the pilot and four others, according to authorities.
Among the five people who died in the late Saturday helicopter crash is 56-year-old Czech Republic’s richest man, billionaire Petr Kellner.
Kellner’s company, financial and telecommunications firm PPF Group, confirmed his death Monday. “We announce with the deepest grief that, in a helicopter accident in Alaska mountains on Saturday, March 27, the founder and majority owner of the PPF group, Mr Petr Kellner, died tragically,” PPF said in a statement.
Alaska police said Benjamin Larochaix, also of the Czech Republic, and Alaskans Sean McMannany and Zachary Russel were killed in the crash. One other person was hospitalized.
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash, which happened near Knik Glacier in Alaska’s backcountry.
Kellner was a towering business figure of the Czech post-communist era, with his wealth estimated at $17.5 billion according to Forbes.

NAIROBI - Sarah Obama, the matriarch of former U.S. President Barack Obama’s Kenyan family has died, relatives and officials confirmed Monday but did not disclose the cause of death. She was at least 99 years old.
Mama Sarah, as the step-grandmother of the former U.S. president was fondly called, was a philanthropist who promoted education for girls and orphans. She passed away around 4 a.m. local time while being treated at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral hospital in Kisumu, Kenya’s third-largest city in the country’s west, according to her daughter Marsat Onyango.
“She died this morning. We are devastated,” Onyango told The Associated Press on a phone call.
She will be remembered for her work to promote education to empower orphans, Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o said while offering his condolences to the people of Kogelo village for losing a matriarch.
“She was a philanthropist who mobilized funds to pay school fees for the orphans,” he said.
Sarah Obama, was the second wife of President Obama’s grandfather and helped raise his father, Barack Obama, Sr. The family is part of Kenya’s Luo ethnic group.
Details on preparations for her burial will be announced later, said her daughter. Sarah Obama was Muslim and it’s not clear whether she will be buried according to her faith’s practices that dictate she should be buried within 24 hours of death.

A man has been charged with luring a three-year-old minor with biscuits and defiling her using his fingers.
PX was charged with defiling MK in Kibera, Nairobi on March 24.
The accused person was charged with the second count of committing indecent act with the child.
PX pleaded guilty to the charges before quickly changing his mind and denied the charges after he was warned of the hefty fine associated with the offence.
Kibera senior principal magistrate Derrick Kuto released him on Sh500,000 and cash bail of the same.
The magistrate directed the matter to be mentioned on April 9.
Kenya: All Domestic Airlines to Suspend Operations From Monday Noon - KAA

Nairobi — The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority has announced that domestic flights in Kenya will continue to operate until Monday, March 29, 2021 noon, after which they cease operations until further notice.
KCAA Director General Gilbert Kibe through a statement said the move is in accordance with the President's directive over the cessation of movement by road, rail, or air in and out of the one zone area, which includes Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos, Kajiado, and Nakuru counties.
"Operations of aircraft shall be allowed until the stated deadline, and thereafter cease any movements," said Kibe.
To meet the traveling demand during this period, Kenya Airways has increased the number of scheduled flights between Nairobi-Mombasa and Nairobi- Kisumu until Monday noon.
At the same time, KQ said travelers affected by the suspension may change their bookings for later travel or request a refund with all penalties waived.
"We sincerely apologize to all our customers for the inconvenience and reiterate that our crew, staff, and country's safety remains our highest priority," said KQ's Acting Chief Commercial and Customer office.
All international flights will continue operating as per schedule.
Similarly, Jambojet has advised all passengers scheduled to travel after 2nd March 2021 to hold on to their tickets, and their flights will be rescheduled to a later date at no extra cost.
The value of these tickets will remain valid for a period of 12 months from the 29th March 2021.
The airline will also continue to operate daily direct flights between Mombasa, Kisumu, and Eldoret.
Domestic flights have been in operation since July 15 2020 while international flights resumed operations August 1, 2020.
The airlines are now staring at a bleak future where the aviation industry was struggling to keep up from the losses witnessed in 2020, after flight suspension both locally and internationally.

The rapper announced over the weekend that he is releasing the trainers in collaboration with design company MSCHF. Each of the 666 pairs on sale are said to contain a single drop of human blood.

Slovak Prime Minister Igor Matovic has stepped down as leader of the country’s ruling coalition following a month of political turmoil triggered by his decision to buy Russian-made Covid vaccines.

An internal war has been raging in the four-party governing coalition since it emerged earlier this month that Matovic had purchased two million doses of the Sputnik V vaccine, which has not yet been given regulatory approval by the European Medicines Agency.
Two of the ruling parties - For the People and Freedom and Solidarity - said they would “leave the government unless there was a cabinet reshuffle and Matovic stepped down”, the news site adds.
