Operation Venetic: Two arrested following £1.6m cocaine seizure

Two men have been arrested after cocaine worth £1.6m was seized in Manchester as part of Operation Venetic.

National Crime Agency (NCA) investigators arrested Braheem Abdullah, 38, last Wednesday (March 24) and a 41-year-old man at Central Park Police Station, north Manchester, on Thursday (March 25).

Abdullah (also known as Dwaine George) of Mariman Drive in Manchester, was subsequently charged with conspiracy to import Class A drugs.

He was remanded in custody until his appearance at Manchester City Crown Court on April 22.

The other man was arrested for breach of bail, and further interviewed in relation to the offence he was on bail for - suspicion of importation of Class A drugs.

He was bailed pending further inquiries.

Officers seized the high-value cocaine at a joiners yard in Wade Street, north East Manchester in April last year through Operation Venetic - the UK-wide law enforcement response that helped bring down encrypted messaging platformEncrochat.

NCA operations manager Ian McConnell said: “The actions of our officers in seizing this cocaine deprived criminal groups of a significant amount of profit.

“This week’s arrests are yet another example of our efforts to apprehend individuals suspected of profiting from drug trafficking.”

On 9 March 2021 around 1600 Belgian police carried out about 200 raids and arrested 48 people and seized €1.2 million in cash as well as 17 tonnes of cocaine. Those arrested included lawyers and members of the Hells Angels.

Federal prosecutor Frédéric Van Leeuw said that "The operation was concentrated on taking down the Sky ECC infrastructure, dismantling the distribution network and seizing the criminal assets of the distributors" and "as many Sky ECC devices as possible" were seized from identified users. The federal prosecutor said about the encryption that "We succeeded. We will send Sky ECC the account number of the federal police".

Belgian and Dutch authorities were alleged to have been able to access the network from 15 February 2021 up to shortly before the raids.

Raids in the Netherlands were part of Operation Argus, the followup to the Lermont operation used to take down Encrochat.

Sky Global disputed claims that their servers and app had been compromised, claiming that they were aware of a fake "Sky ECC" app being available on unsecure phones.

Sky Global said they were "actively investigating and pursuing legal action against the offending individuals for impersonation, false lights, trademark infringement, injurious falsehood, defamation and fraud".

Indictment and shutdown

On March 12, 2021, US Department of Justice in San Diego, California, issued an indictment against Sky Global's CEO, Jean-Francois Eap, and a former distributor, Thomas Herdman. They were charged with a "conspiracy to violate the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO)", and arrest warrants were issued. The indictment states that the Sky Global's devices are "specifically designed to prevent law enforcement from actively monitoring the communications between members of transnational criminal organizations involved in drug trafficking and money laundering. As part of its services, Sky Global guarantees that messages stored on its devices can and will be remotely deleted by the company if the device is seized by law enforcement or otherwise compromised."

In response, Eap has published a statement branding the allegations as false, saying that he and his company are being "targeted" because they "build tools to protect the fundamental right to privacy." "Sky Global's technology works for the good of all. It was not created to prevent the police from monitoring criminal organizations; it exists to prevent anyone from monitoring and spying on the global community. The indictment against me personally in the US is an example of the police and the government trying to vilify anyone who takes a stance against unwarranted surveillance."

On March 19, 2021, the company apparently shut down the operations after BlackBerry cut it off from its United Endpoint Manager services. Its website has been seized by the FBI.

Mafia fugitive reportedly busted after being seen in YouTube cooking videos

He was caught red-sauce-handed.

A Mafia fugitive has been caught in his Caribbean hideaway — after being spotted in YouTube cooking videos he made with his wife, Italian police said Monday.

Marc Feren Claude Biart, 53, had been on the run since 2014, when Italian prosecutors ordered his arrest for alleged cocaine trafficking for the Cacciola clan of the ‘Ndrangheta Mafia, Agence France-Presse said.

He managed to lead a quiet life in Boca Chica in the Dominican Republic — until he showed off his Italian cooking skills on a YouTube channel, police said, according to the news agency.

While Biart attempted to hide his face, he was betrayed by distinctive tattoos on his body, the agency said, without elaborating on their distinctive features.

The video was part of a cooking channel he set up with his wife, according to Calabria News. He had otherwise lived like a “ghost” among the large Italian community in Boca Chica, with locals just knowing him as “Marc,” the outlet said.

Biart was shown being escorted by Interpol to a jet that took him to Milan, where he was arrested as soon as he landed, according to the report. His bust was a key development for the specialist operation dubbed I-CAN, for Interpol Cooperation Against ‘Ndrangheta.

The ‘Ndrangheta is considered one of the world’s most powerful crime syndicates due to its control of most of the cocaine entering Europe, AFP said.

It has extended its reach across all parts of the world, and it has long surpassed Sicily’s Cosa Nostra as Italy’s biggest Mafia organization.
