Major General (MG) Gary W. Johnston
Commanding General
A Military Intelligence (MI) Officer, Major General Johnston earned his commission from Arkansas Tech University's Reserve Officer Training Corps in 1987. Following the MI Officer Basic Course, he spent his formative years as a Platoon Leader, and later as an Executive Officer, with the 2nd MI Battalion, 111th MI Brigade, U.S. Army Intelligence Center and School, Fort Huachuca, Arizona. He also served as a squadron S2 with 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment as a Lieutenant.
He has commanded at every level from Company through Major Command, and has extensive joint and operational experience.
Major General Johnston has previously held several key positions as Director of Intelligence, J-2, U.S. Special Operations Command; Assistant Chief of Staff, G-2, XVIII Airborne Corps; and Deputy J-2, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command (ISAF-IJC), Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, Afghanistan.
His Joint and Combined assignments include Commander, Task Force 165 in support of Combined/Joint Task Force 76 in Bagram, Afghanistan; Commander, Combined Task Force Viper, Spin Boldak, Afghanistan; Deputy Director of Operations, Joint Intelligence Center Central, U.S. Central Command; Chief, WMD Analysis Branch, Joint Intelligence Center Central; and Executive Officer, Directorate of Operations, Joint Intelligence Center Pacific.
In his current position, Major General Johnston leads 17,500 Soldiers, civilians and contractors located at 180 locations in 45 countries, executing mission command of operational intelligence and security forces; conducting and synchronizing worldwide multi-discipline and all-source intelligence and security operations; delivering linguist support and intelligence-related advanced skills training, acquisition support, logistics, communications, and other specialized capabilities in support of Army, Joint, and Coalition Commands and the U.S. Intelligence Community.
He most recently served as Deputy Chief of Staff, Intelligence, Resolute Support Mission, North Atlantic Treaty Organization/Director, J-2, U.S. Forces-Afghanistan, OPERATION FREEDOM'S SENTINEL, from April 2017 until April 2018.
Major General Johnston holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Arkansas Tech University; a Master of Science of Strategic Intelligence from the Joint Military Intelligence College; and a Master's Degree from the U.S. Army War College. He is a graduate of the Military Intelligence Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the Post Graduate Intelligence Program, Command and General Staff College, and the Joint Forces Staff College.
His awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal (2 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters), Legion of Merit (2 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters), Bronze Star Medal (2 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters), Defense Meritorious Service Medal (1 Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster), Meritorious Service Medal (1 Silver Oak Leaf Cluster), Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Army Staff Identification Badge, and several other awards.
Major General Johnston enjoys tennis, fishing, running, and bowling. He is a fan of the Oakland Raiders football team and the Cincinnati Reds baseball team. >>13332947
