Sir Ron Brierley pleads guilty to possessing child sexual abuse material

Brierley pleaded guilty to three charges of possessing child sex abuse material in the Downing Centre Local Court with 14 charges withdrawn.

Brierley's barrister admitted he possessed "some images" but the exact figure is "in dispute".

A spokesperson for the prime minister said Ardern had asked for the forfeiture process to be initiated.

Brierley will have 30 days to respond, but after that the prime minister can write to the Queen asking her to cancel his appointment to the Order and he will be asked to return his insignia.

A long-time campaigner against child exploitation said Brierley should do the decent thing and give up his knighthood himself.

Family accused of forcing waitresses at Houston bar to perform sex acts

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – A Houston family is being accused of coordinating a sex trafficking operation in which waitresses working at a bar were forced to perform sex acts on customers.

The U.S. Attorney's office said 54-year-old Maria Botello and her children 28-year-old Edgar Botello and 31-year-old Yudy Lucatero along with her nephew, 23-year-old Arian Botello, coerced waitresses working at Puerto Alegre in east Houston to engage in commercial sex acts.

According to a criminal complaint filed on March 30, the family members were allegedly doing this for 13 years, from 2007 to 2020.

The complaint states Maria would coordinate dates with clients who paid $70 for every 15 minutes with the waitresses. Her son and nephew were "the enforcers" who used weapons, threats and intimidation to keep the women compliant, according to the complaint.

"The investigation also revealed Lucatero and Maria Botello discussed the rules and procedures in relation to the sex trafficking," read a news release issued by the U.S. Attorney's office on Thursday.

The victims allegedly included adults and at least one minor.

Authorities also identified another victim who was brought to the U.S. specifically to work at the bar when she was 17, according to the complaint. While she was there, she was allegedly forced to engage in commercial sex.

The U.S. Attorney's office says anyone who may have been victimized by suspected traffickers, or who has information about potential victims, is urged to contact the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission Victims Services office at 713-494-5869 to file a report.

Emmy-winning set decorator found dead under debris in apartment

Evelyn Sakash, 66, was a set designer who worked for various television shows. She had been missing since late September.

The body of Evelyn Sakash, 66, was discovered underneath a pile of garbage in her kitchen, a spokesperson for the New York City Police Department said. The remains were in a decomposed state, according to the spokesperson, who said that police do not suspect criminality in her death.

A medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

The discovery was made by Sakash's sister and a cleaning crew she had hired to clear out the apartment, police said. Officers had been to the residence twice before over the past six months — once to remove pets from the apartment — but did not find Sakash, the NYPD said Thursday.

Sakash won a Daytime Emmy in 2003 for the PBS series “Between the Lions," which ended in November 2010. Throughout her career as a set designer, she also worked on "Orange Is the New Black," "Still Alice," and "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," according to her IMDb page.

Former Toronto Blue Jays youth baseball instructor charged with child luring

A former lead instructor with the Toronto Blue Jays' academy for young players faces two charges involving sexual offences against children.

John Douglas Hashimoto, 56, of Hamilton is charged with luring a child under 16 and an invitation to sexual touching, Halton Regional Police said in a release Thursday.

The release said Hashimoto is with the Toronto Blue Jays Baseball Academy, but the MLB team later said in a statement to CBC Hamilton that he's a former employee.
