There were many competing messiahs at the time. The Jewish people were under oppression and without good leadership so looking for that.
IIRC, there were three at the time. John the Bapstist was thought to be one, by some. They all died, without resurrection. Regular dead like you or me.
That was the key thing the people (frankly mankind) were looking for.
