Gov. Polis, Mayor Hancock would welcome 2021 MLB All-Star Game to Colorado
“The Home Run Derby would be pretty legendary,” Gray said Friday.
The possibility of Denver hosting the 2021 All-Star Game emerged Friday when Major League Baseball announced it is moving the game out of Atlanta in response to a new Georgia law that has civil rights groups concerned legislation could restrict voting access for people of color. The 2021 MLB draft, a new addition to All-Star Game festivities this year, also will be moved from Atlanta.
“Over the last week, we have engaged in thoughtful conversations with clubs, former and current players, the Players Association, and The Players Alliance, among others, to listen to their views,” MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. “I have decided that the best way to demonstrate our values as a sport is by relocating this year’s All-Star Game and MLB Draft.
“Major League Baseball fundamentally supports voting rights for all Americans and opposes restrictions to the ballot box.”
The Governor knows that Colorado is the best home for the All-Star Game, especially because Colorado also has strong laws that enable voters to cast their legal ballots any way they choose including through mail or in person,” Wieman said. “The Governor will be burning up the phones the next few days to see if there is an opening to bring the All-Star game to Denver.”
Mayor Michael Hancock would also welcome the chance for the event to come to LoDo, said Theresa Marchetta, director of strategic communications and media policy for Denver’s mayor.
