They couldn't reach Russia from the US back in the days and since they knew that actually Russia won WW II they saw Russia as a threat. But Russia did never anything else than defending Russia. They already had the biggest country in the world. So since they couldn't reach Russia from US territory they put their missiles directly at Russia's doorstep.
