Frog in boiling water. Don't just drop him into boiling water, he will jump out. Raise the temp slowly, let him get accustomed to it for a while, then take it up a notch. Drop by drop, slowly, so that the frog doesn't connect the dots. Use distractions to keep him occupied with other things and divert his attention and waste time and energy.
