Back in the '80's United lost a suit and had to put unqualified women in the Captain's seat to meet court mandated quota's. A lot of senior Captains took retirement rather than risk their lives flying with them.
I was flying into SFO in a then brand new 757. I'd seen a young woman sitting in the Captain's seat when boarding but assumed it was just a flight attendant schmoozing it up. A pair of senior pilots were dead heading back across the aisle from me. After several aborted approaches due to nasty cross winds she pulled the gear up again and went back into a holding orbit. An apology came over the intercom and said sorry for the delay, and the drinks are on us. I turned to the senior pilots and said "I would feel better if one of you were in the cockpit". They said they would feel better as well. I asked why we were orbiting for so long the they said "to burn off fuel". When the drink cart came by they both took 5 or 6 or the little drinks and pounded them down.
When she finally drove the plane down into the runway it wrenched one of the landing gear nearly out of the wing. We had to de-plane on the tarmac because the plane could not taxi with the blown tires and landing gear nearly twisted out of the socket. Haven't flown since.
