If you read the Church of Satan stuff, you will notice that it sounds very much like main stream educated humanist. Large parts of it sound very noble in its intention, which is why it draws people in who are disillusioned with other religions and their hypocrisy. They also are very Darwin sounding, which attracts the science people. It is also not that far from pagan ideas, which are more deferential to nature than most other religions, and thus brings in the people who observe the realities of nature. The symbolism is help with the mystery, drives rumors, resulting in the power of the masses hatred towards the group. When you do not have morals to control people, the next best thing is to use fear to control them. Fear of the masses find out you do something they hate, is a very effective control mechanism. I believe it has been the mechanism used to control most civilizations since antiquity. Those in the the club are untouchable until they step out of line, when the club controls the society the untouchability becomes unbounded.

that is pushed in the west because those things actually weaken society. If you are looking to overthrow your biggest enemy, weaken them from within by using the things that are most destructive to society. If you already hold the balance of power in a system you are trying to destroy, you no longer need the fear for the majority of those you control, only the very top, where the actions must be well beyond what even a desensitized population can stomach. Satanist are collectivist, believing in oneness with nature. Christianity gave rise to individualism, with individual choice of actions and belief outweighing the collective salvation or guilt. That is untenable for collectivist, and the United States with its individual rights and freedoms are a direct affront to what Satanist, humanist, and science believers hold dear.

It is the unacceptability of the group and it's actions that gives it is ability to create a command and control structure. Being the nemesis of what is acceptable in society what is needed, not the specifics of what the group espouses its beliefs are.
