There was a “pervasive stench of sewage” in Maxwell’s unit. This is caused when “the plumbing system goes unused” and “gases escape from the drains.”
Maxwell’s lawyers: “I challenge the government to identify anyone that would risk their health by drinking the [jail’s] tap water. Even the guards resort to drinking bottled water.”
The jail is “permeated with mold and vermin. Cockroaches and rodents are plentiful.”
An HVAC inspector called the legal visiting room - where Maxwell meets with her lawyers - “a death trap.”
The government’s releases on Maxwell (such as the accusation she doesn’t flush her toilet) are attempts to “publicly embarrass and humiliate” Maxwell, eroding her chances of a trial by a fair and impartial jury.
