Your thought process is similar to mine.
I've tried to explain all this to many people. I usually start at the 40,000 foot level to highlight the basics. Sometimes I have to go from a different angle and go with the "Commodities/Assets in the World Stage" that are often traded for evils sake: Weapons, Drugs, Energy, People.
