Since I haven't contributed much other than venting and bitching, may I please offer anon hypothesis as to why 'lava' is so? Here goes.
Think about the properties of the material. Not the physical properties, but rather the properties in relation to the Electromagnetic Force. Most rock is not entirely 'conductive', although many have conductive components within the "chemical" make-up of the rock. There are also components in the composition that act as 'resistors'. Both conductivity and resistivity are relative to temperature. For example, if a conductor is heated beyond the curie point, it typically looses it's conductive properties. Likewise, if a resistor is heated beyond a certain temperature, the resistive properties no longer apply in the same manner as they once did. This applies to what theoretical "physicist" refer to as "the quantum tunneling", but that's not the point we're trying to make here, although it's a hella-based explanation for the "mystery".
In the instance of volcanoes, there are charges (Q) in the Earth built up that seek balance with varying potentials that exist above our Earth's Gaussian Surface. When the voltage between the charge (Q) in the Earth and that of the above surrounding space reaches a level intense enough, the resistive properties or the rock no longer can withstand the conductive properties in the equation. Hence, the charge potential finds a way to maintain the balance, relatively safely, by slowly melting the resistive material, allowing the stored charge to escape. Lighting is a common observance which accompanies volcanoes. This is part of the reasoning why this anon would be led to such conclusions.
Meanwhile, though, interesting to think that with the melting of the rock, not only is the result to disturb the resistive properties, but typically the conductive also get retarded (proper wording) by the process. Thus, the Laws of Nature exist as they are to prevent Nature from destroying Nature, even though this process may seem slightly destructive to us petty Earthlings wandering about aimlessly upon our Gaussian Surface, often without even stopping to realize that there is a varying greater charge (Q+) that looms overhead at nearly all times.
Yeah, other folks probably cover this moar better than me. If not, I offer my speculative, logical reasoning behind why I think dis is true.
