During my life I've learned that even within various countries/cultures they have prejudice against the darker skinned among them. Specific anecdotes include a Philippine friend who never wanted to go to the beach or spend too much time in the sun. He explained it would just make his skin darker and in his home country there was a disdain for darker skinned people many of whom come from northern areas of the country. He said locus northo or something like that.

Costa Ricans have a social hierarchy of skin color. The paler skinned people are descendants of the Spanish and are considered the upper crust, the darker skinned people are looked down upon, and even the darker skinned people look down on the people who live on the Caribbean side, many of whom look African.

There's more. These are 2 I've learned about firsthand.

Maybe it depends on your parish. I was raised Catholic, we went to church every week and every holy day, attended CCD, my parents were active with church organizations and it was never even suggested to the congregation that we read a bible or even have a bible.
