The leading contenders to be New York’s next attorney general
A guide to Eric Schneiderman's potential successors.
Within three hours on Monday evening, state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman – arguably New York’s second-most powerful political official and the highest-ranking law enforcement officer in the state – had been accused of physically abusing four women, called upon by a number of elected officials to resign, and then abruptly stepped down. Schneiderman’s shocking downfall occurred at breakneck speed, leaving a void in the attorney general’s office. State Solicitor General Barbara Underwood will run the office on an interim basis, but the state Legislature has the power to choose Schneiderman’s successor to serve out his term than ends in January 2019. The behind-the-scenes scramble by several prominent New Yorkers with a background in law to take the spot has already begun.
