Just looked up that particular verse and the original Greek word that was translated "to lead".
εἰσφέρω eisphérō, ice-fer'-o; from G1519 and G5342; to carry inward (literally or figuratively):—bring (in), lead into.
I think the prayer is saying God, do allow us to be lead into temptation.
What the Pope is saying is don't "abandon" us into temptation. I think what he's wanting to change it to is because of all the sins they've committed. He's trying to set a belief that the prayer is once we've sinned, don't abandon us because it will lead us into more temptation to sin. Clearly, this is not the meaning of the prayer that Jesus Christ laid out.
If we believe that those that have committed crimes, serious crimes against humanity should not be punished because it will only lead them into more temptation to sin, then we won't want them punished. That's what I think he's hoping for.
Otherwise, why change it after all these years?? Btw, if you read the verses prior to this prayer, Jesus Christ is clearly saying to NOT use "vain repetition" when praying.

7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen [do]: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
And what do these heathens do at every.prayer.service - they vainly repeat this prayer of Jesus Christ. This prayer was ONLY meant as an "example" of how to pray, not to use this prayer every time you pray!!
