CHICO STATE TO REQUIRE COVID-19 VACCINATIONS FOR UNIVERSITY HOUSING, ATHLETIC PROGRAMS

CHICO, Calif. – Chico State announced it will require COVID-19 vaccinations for those who choose to live in University housing and for University athletic programs.

Chico State officials told Action News Now mandatory vaccinations are something they are considering for the entire student body.

Emergency Operations Center Director for Chico State, Mike Guzzi, said they are looking into seeing if the school could require the vaccine holistically.

"If getting the vaccine and being safe is the only way to do it, I would personally want to do that, and go back to normal life," said Chico State student, Julia Maldonado. "I would say yes I would want everyone to get the vaccine in order to get back, I think it's really important, but some people their body their body, their choice, but herd immunity is super important too."

“So at this time we are still looking into whether we'd be able to require that with our legal teams at the California State University system level," Guzzi said. "Obviously, we know that the more people we get vaccinated the better, that's why we've been in a heavy get the message out to our students and staff to take the opportunity to get vaccinated."

University leaders said even though they do plan to require students living in University housing and participating in athletics to get vaccinated, they are still working out any exceptions due to medical reasons.

The university recently announced that 50% of their classes will be available in-person in the Fall.
