Brave reveals why it is disabling Google's FLoC in the browser
Several browser makers confirmed already that they won't support FLoC in their browsers, even if Chromium-based, because they believe it is a bad idea for user privacy.
Brave, maker of Brave browser, published a new post on the official company blog in which the company reveals why Brave browser won't support FLoC. The arguments are not new, but they may help understand why everyone, besides Google and other advertising companies, think that FLoC is bad for privacy.
Brave focuses on three aspects of FLoC that it believes make the Web head in the wrong direction:
-
Sites are informed about browsing habits, even if users never visited them – this is a very strong argument, considering that sites did not know anything about a user if that user never visited the site; this is especially true for users who disable third-party cookies in their browsers, and use other protective means. For the average user, FLoC will still reveal more about their interests than before.
-
FLoC adds a strong identifier for fingerprinting – FLoC's cohorts are made up of thousands of users, but that is a tiny group when it comes to fingerprinting. Coupled with other fingerprinting techniques, it could pave the way for improving fingerprinting accuracy.
-
Google should not be the one determining what is sensitive and what is not – Google wants to exclude sensitive categories, such as race, religion, sexual orientation, and others from being used by FLoC, to avoid creating cohorts made up of these groups. To exclude these, Google somehow needs to know about these, as it would not be able to make the determination otherwise.

US diplomats are ‘a**holes’, Russian space chief says as State Department silent on anniversary of Gagarin’s historic space flight
https://www.rt.com/russia/520902-space-chief-gagarin-us-diplomats/
A series of commemorations were held throughout the former USSR and across the world to mark the Soviet-Russian cosmonaut’s maiden voyage into the stars. On April 12, 1961, his Vostok-1 spacecraft blasted off from a launch pad in the desert of Kazakhstan, before orbiting the Earth once. He landed in a Russian potato field, much to the surprise of local farmers, just 108 minutes later.
The mission marked the first major milestone in the space race between Moscow and Washington as Cold War rivals. However, since the fall of the Soviet Union, the two nations have largely cooperated on international projects aimed at the peaceful development of space travel. NASA paid tribute to Gagarin on Monday, saying that “as we reflect on his accomplishment today, we look ahead to the future of human space flight as we prepare to send humans back to the Moon.”
Moscow has accused US diplomats of failing to acknowledge Soviet spaceflight achievements during commemorations held in honor of Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who became the first human to orbit the Earth 60 years ago this week. On Tuesday, the Russian Embassy in Washington added its voice to the row, claiming that the State Department had “again demonstrated memory loss regarding the history of space exploration” and accusing the diplomats of distorting Gagarin’s memory.
“Our forgetful colleagues can find the bust of the space pioneer at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C. Sculptures of Yuri Gagarin also were erected in Cleveland, Colorado Springs, New York City, Houston and Chicago,” the envoys said. “Thousands of Americans, including astronauts and NASA personnel, visit these sites every year to honor the memory of the Soviet cosmonaut.”
Just last week, the Embassy noted, a NASA astronaut had been ferried up to the International Space Station on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft named after Gagarin. “Let’s hope that these facts will help American diplomats in the future not to be shy to say out loud the name of the first cosmonaut on Earth,” Moscow’s representatives concluded.

What the Closing of the Suez Canal Says About U.S. Maritime Security
The Ever Given episode proves that ever-larger container ships transiting strategic chokepoints pose a challenge for modern tugs and salvage ships to quickly clear.
e Ever Given wasn’t the first ship to block the Suez Canal. A multi-ship pile-up in 2018 snarled maritime traffic there for two days. But the sheer size and bulk of the Ever Given was a much greater challenge—one that took 11 days to solve.
As container ships grow ever more massive, it becomes increasingly difficult to clear accidents quickly in strategic waterways. This simple reality has troubling economic and military implications.
If a strategic maritime chokepoint such as the Suez Canal is closed, then how long can this be endured before the U.S. economy suffers serious damage? And is the Navy appropriately positioned and sized to contend with such closures?
On the day before Ever Given’s grounding, the Eisenhower carrier strike group (CSG) was in the Eastern Mediterranean conducting operations against ISIS (Islamic State in Syria and Iraq), while the Makin Island amphibious ready group was in the Arabian Sea. Had tensions turned to conflict in Ukraine while the canal was blocked, the nearest significant naval carrier strike force (the Theodore Roosevelt CSG) would have had to make a circuitous transit from the Indian Ocean—a danger acknowledged publicly by the Pentagon.
The Suez Canal closure created a 360-ship traffic jam and disrupted almost 13 percent of global maritime trade. In addition to creating added costs for shippers, the blockage is anticipated to cause downstream backlogs as delayed ships surge into and overwhelm ports and losses in global trade of up to $10 billion. The United States is less reliant on the Suez Canal than European and Asian economies, but had the Panama Canal been similarly blocked, it could severely impact the U.S. economy, according to a 2010 U.S government study.
Additionally, a third party with controlling stock of chokepoints, notably China in the Panama Canal, can imperil transit of critical war reserves or naval vessels in crisis. On this more action is needed.
With the Biden administration seeking a multi-trillion dollar “infrastructure” bill, it would be wise to consider investments that harden the U.S. economy to such disruptions. After all, in 2011, the U.S. relied on maritime shipping to receive 53 percent of its imports and send 38 percent of its exports and remains much the same today.

IS BIDEN REALLY IN CHARGE?
Texas Senator John Cornyn (R) asked on Monday if Joe Biden is "really in charge," based on the President's much lower profile than his predecessors, and obviously scripted appearances.

ONLY 1/5 OF BIDEN'S INFRASTRUCTURE PLAN IS FOR "INFRASTRUCTURE"
Only a fifth of President Joe Biden’s introduced “infrastructure” plan is subjected to be spent on actual infrastructure projects such as bridges, trains, waterways, and roads.
The remaining portions would be spent to support industrial policy and what has commonly been called “pork barrel” projects. Of the suggested spending, 26 percent would back the administration’s proposed industrial policy, which would favor domestic manufacturing and green technology.
A key instance of this is the offered $174 billion to be paid to win the electric vehicle (EV) market. It is not clear from the White House’s guidance paper how much of that cash would be spent on building hard assets such as EV charging stations, nor do we know how much would be spent on federal payments to promote the purchase of such vehicles.

175 TOP CEOs OPPOSE BIDEN'S TAX HIKE
A new survey shows a whopping 98% of American CEOs say Joe Biden's proposed corporate tax rate hike could severely stunt employees' wage growth and companies' profits.
Biden's current proposal is paying for at least half of his $4 trillion 'Build Back Better' jobs, infrastructure and social welfare plan by raising the corporate tax rate from 21 to 28 percent.
A Business Roundtable Survey, however, finds that CEOs predict this hike, coupled with international tax changes, would weaken expansion, innovation and – most important for the jobs side – hiring.
Seventy-one percent of respondents said the hike would decrease their ability to hire employees and nearly 66% said it would create a slower wage growth for U.S. workers as Congress already grapples with what to do about the federal minimum wage.
