December 17, 1944 Ulithi During a typhoon IOWA’s plane is washed over the side. The storm also damages the shaft and requires USS IOWA to return to the United States for overhaul at Hunters Point Shipyard, San Francisco.

 

April 19, 1989 Off Puerto Rico An explosion of undetermined cause rips through IOWA’s Number Two sixteen-inch gun turret killing 47 crewmen. IOWA is still able to deploy to Europe and the Mediterranean Sea in mid-year. Turret Two remained unrepaired.
