Spend the Night Together at Mick Jagger’s Island Home

In an effort to defray the prodigious expense of maintaining a multitude of multimillion-dollar homes around the globe, rich and famous folk sometimes opt to rent out part-time vacation residences at prices that — let’s be honest — would make a minimum-wage worker choke on his bus pass. A prime example: Mick Jagger, who owns a six-bedroom and five-bathroom beachfront compound on the pristine and private West Indies island of Mustique that can be leased by groups of up to 10. Prices start at $16,500 per week during the low season and run up to $30,000 per week during high season.

The Japanese-inspired compound, dubbed Stargroves, overlooks L’Ansecoy Bay and comprises seven separate pavilions connected by a raised wooden walkway that spans a tranquil brook as it meanders through lush, coconut-palm-dotted grounds. A spacious living-room pavilion opens to a beachside sundeck. Just outside the dining pavilion, an open-air gazebo overlooks the swimming pool. Separate structures house a den, fitness room, and game room with a media lounge and billiards table that features kooky coral-pink felt the exact color of the walls.

The master suite occupies its own beachside villa, with a private sitting room and an en suite bathroom. A guest pod has two more bedrooms and a shared bathroom, while a children’s pavilion comprises two bedrooms and two bathrooms that flank a central sitting room, plus a small kitchen and oceanside veranda. Renters are provided access to a Jeep they can use to tool around the island, and they are pampered by a staff of six that includes a chef-trained butler.

Jagger also owns Pelican Beach, a smaller property next door to Stargroves that includes a three-bedroom and three-bathroom beachfront villa. That goes for a more reasonable, if not exactly inexpensive, $6,500 to $11,000 per week.

The clearly still virile 73-year-old Rolling Stones frontman just had his eighth child; the mother is his 30-year-old former girlfriend Melanie Hamrick, for whom he reportedly bought a $7 million townhouse in New York City.

The snn200642 masks, which are made in China and sold and distributed by a Quebec-based company called Mélifer, had been part of Canada's public school reopening plan.

Students were told they had to use them in the classroom to prevent the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus (Covid-19).

Health Canada, however, discovered during a preliminary risk assessment that the masks contain microscopic particles of graphene that, when inhaled, could cause serious lung damage.

"Graphene is a strong, very thin material that is used in manufacturing, but it can be harmful to the lungs when inhaled and can cause long-term health problems," CBC News reported.

For a time, some nursery educators had expressed suspicions about the masks, which were making children feel as if they were swallowing cat hair while wearing them. Now we know that instead of cat hair, children inhaled the equivalent of asbestos all day.

"If you have this type of mask in stock, we ask you to stop distributing them and keep them in a safe place now," the provincial government wrote in a directive, which was sent to Canada's ministries of Education, families and higher education.

Face Masks Are Neither Safe Nor Effective

As a result, the snn200642 masks that were being used across Canada in school classrooms had never been tested for safety or efficacy.

Patrick Baillargeon, who heads Quebec's laboratory supplies purchase, says that because of this, the masks should never have been used.

The risks associated with inhaling graphene particles are unacceptable, he added, and Canadians – and everyone else, for that matter – should stop using the masks immediately.

A Syrian surface-to-air missile was shot into Israel early Thursday, prompting Israel to return fire into Syria, the Israeli military said, the latest spat as tensions continue to simmer between Israel and Iran-allied forces operating in Syria.

Key Facts

The Syrian missile landed in the Negev Desert, causing sirens to reportedly sound off near Israel’s closely guarded Dimona nuclear reactor, though the Israeli Defense Forces said it did not appear to be a deliberate strike, meaning the missile may have missed its intended target.

Israel returned fire by striking multiple missile launch sites in Syria, according to the IDF.

Israel’s strike injured four Syrian soldiers and caused “some material damage” early Thursday morning, Syrian state news service SANA reported.

A Syrian surface-to-air missile exploded in southern Israel on Thursday, the Israeli military said, in an incident that triggered warning sirens in an area near the secretive Dimona nuclear reactor.

There were no immediate reports of any injuries or damage in Israel.

The military said that in response to the launch, it attacked several missile batteries in Syria, including the one that fired the projectile that struck southern Israel.

Syria’s state news agency said Syrian air defences intercepted the Israeli attack that targeted areas in the Damascus suburbs.

“Air defences intercepted the rockets and downed most of them,” the agency said.

Israeli Army Radio said the Syrian missile had been fired at Israeli aircraft during an earlier strike and had overflown its target and reached the Dimona area.

A Reuters reporter about 90 km (56 miles) north of Dimona heard the sound of an explosion minutes before the military tweeted that sirens had gone off in the region.

The errant Syrian missile was an SA-5, one of several fired at Israeli air force planes, according to an Israeli military spokesman. It did not hit the reactor, he added.

Israeli media have said for weeks that air defences around the Dimona reactor and the Red Sea port Eilat were being beefed up in anticipation of a possible long-range missile or drone attack by Iranian-backed forces – perhaps from as far away as Yemen.

Facebook v Apple: The ad tracking row heats up

A new feature is being introduced to iPhones and iPads this week which is causing a huge rift between Apple and Facebook.

It will allow device users to say no to having their data collected by apps.

Facebook has been put in a spin by this because user data - and the advertising it can generate - is what makes the company so profitable. This update could deal a severe blow to its business model.

What's it about?

The row focuses on a unique device identifier on every iPhone and iPad, called the IDFA (identifier for advertisers). Companies which sell mobile ads, including Facebook, use this IDFA to both target ads and estimate their effectiveness.

The IDFA can also be paired with other tech, such as Facebook's tracking pixels or tracking cookies, which follow users around the web, to learn even more about you.

But when iOS 14.5 comes out this week, the new App Tracking Transparency feature will be on by default. It will force app developers to explicitly ask for permission from users to use this IDFA.

Surveys suggest, and Facebook acknowledges, that up to 80% will say no.

Why is Apple doing this?

Apple has little interest in its customers' data because it makes money from selling devices and in-app purchases, rather than from advertising. Plus it has always marketed itself as a privacy-first company.

Back in 2010, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs acknowledged that some people didn't care about how much data they shared, but said they should always be informed of how it was being used.

"Privacy means people know what they're signing up for, in plain English and repeatedly… ask them, ask them every time," he said.

More recently, in what many saw as a thinly-veiled reference to Facebook, current chief executive Tim Cook said: "If a business is built on misleading users, on data exploitation, on choices that are no choices at all, it does not deserve our praise. It deserves reform."

Apple is baking privacy into its systems. Its browser Safari already blocks third-party cookies by default, and last year Apple forced app providers in iOS to spell out in the App Store listings what data they collect.

And Facebook isn't best pleased?

Facebook has warned that the app update could cut the money earned through its ad network by half, hitting small businesses the hardest.

And it argues that sharing data with advertisers is key to giving users "better experiences".

It also says that Apple is being hypocritical, because it will force businesses to turn to subscriptions and other in-app payments for revenue, from which Apple takes a cut.

As it often does when under pressure, Facebook has gone on a PR offensive. It took out adverts in national newspapers in December, featuring small businesses talking about how they only survived the pandemic thanks to targeted ads.

In its latest blog, Facebook appeared to accept the changes and promised "new advertiser experiences and measurement protocols". It admitted that the ways digital advertisers collect and use information needed to "evolve" to one that will rely on "less data".

Why should I care?

In recent years, governments and regulators have become increasingly concerned about just how big and complex the ecosystem around websites, apps and social media companies has become.

Here are some points to consider:

*the average app includes six third-party trackers that are there solely to collect and share your online data, according to a report commissioned by Apple

*some apps request access to more data than is required to provide their service. TikTok, for instance, is being sued by England's former children's commissioner for collecting large amounts of children's data

Dockworkers Begin Strike at Port of Montreal

MONTREAL, April 26 (Reuters) – Dockworkers at Canada’s second-largest port on Monday began their second strike in less than a year, as business leaders urged Ottawa to quickly end a walkout they said could cost the economy C$25 million ($20 million) a day.

The federal Liberal government said on Sunday it would introduce special legislation to end the strike at the Port of Montreal, hoping to stop it from hurting the economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Unionized workers, in talks for a new contract since 2018, started a partial strike last week and warned they were prepared to walk off the job completely to protest changes to their work schedule.

The center-left minority Liberal government needs the support of one opposition party to push through the legislation. The left-leaning New Democrats and Bloc Quebecois both said they would not support it.

The official opposition Conservatives, who have generally supported the idea of forcing an end to strikes in key industries, said they would study the law before deciding.

Both sides said they were meeting on Monday with a federal mediator.

Partial Strike at Port of Montreal Sparks Fears of More Congestion

The Canadian Union of Public Employees Quebec’s 1,125 longshore workers had already refused to work weekends and nights after rejecting an offer in March from the Maritime Employers Association.

“A labor stoppage would not only prevent goods from passing through the port but would also create congestion at other ports,” said Perrine Beatty, chief executive of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.

The Montreal Port Authority said it handles C$275 million worth of goods daily.

“This strike is going to have massive detrimental effects on the Canadian agricultural sector,” said Dwight Gearing, president of DG Global, a major shipper of soybeans.

The dockworkers’ last strike in August 2020 lasted 19 days and had a ripple effect on supply chains.

University Medicine Greifswald Reports Breakthrough in SARS-CoV-2 Vaccination-Related Thrombotic Complications

Vaccines are vital for controlling the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2. However, following widespread vaccination using a recombinant adenoviral vector encoding the spike protein antigen of SARS-CoV-2 (AZD1222, AstraZeneca), reports have emerged of some vaccine recipients developing unusual thrombotic events and thrombocytopenia. Prof. Dr. Andreas Greinacher from University Medicine Greifswald has investigated if these recipients could have a prothrombotic disorder caused by platelet-activating antibodies directed against a platelet protein, as a similar mechanism is known to be caused by heparin and sometimes by other environmental triggers.

Led by Prof. Dr. Andreas Greinacher's research group, Transfusion Medicine, at University Medicine Greifswald, researchers from the Medical University of Vienna in Austria, the McMaster University in Canada, the German Paul-Ehrlich-Institut (Federal Institute for Vaccines and Biomedicines), and University Medicine Greifswald investigated the clinical and laboratory features of patients in Germany and Austria who developed cerebral vein thrombosis and thrombocytopenia following the AZD1222 vaccination. The Transfusion Medicine research group has also developed a new specific confirmatory assay that allows the detection of these antibodies.

Patients tested strongly positive for anti-platelet antibodies by immunoassay and strongly positive in the newly developed functional test (platelet activation assay) in the presence of a newly identified cofactor (still under embargo). The test allows for clear differentiation between the new syndrome and the long-known adverse drug effect of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT). Platelet activation by the AZD1222 vaccination associated with antibodies was inhibited by intravenous immunoglobulin, a widely available and approved medication.

Greifswald's research group highlights the unique collaboration of international scientists, physicians, and the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut (German regulatory agency), treating physicians who referred blood samples and patients who agreed to donate their blood for research. Within a short period of time, from receiving the first samples on Tuesday, 16 March 2021, at noon until Friday, 19 March 2021, the group was able to:

• identify the mechanism of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination induced severe thrombotic complications,

• identify a widely available screening test (this has already been confirmed by researchers in the UK),

• develop a confirmatory test which seems to be highly sensitive and specific (cautionary note: the number of samples investigated is still limited),

• and to identify a treatment that can rapidly deescalate the catastrophic prothrombotic mechanism. As the research group's work has demonstrated in the past, intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) is highly effective in treating catastrophic HIT; and as the clinical and laboratory characteristics of HIT closely resemble those of vaccine-associated complications, it is very likely that IVIG will also be an important therapeutic option (in addition to anticoagulant treatment) for patients. IVIG is approved and available in most hospitals.

University Medicine Greifswald proposes to call this syndrome VIPIT Virus/Vaccine Induced Prothrombotic Immune Thrombocytopenia.
