Amazon continues to pull books critical of transgender ideology

Online retail giant Amazon has pulled a book critical of transgender identity theory, after calls to ban the book flooded social media. It is the second book Amazon has banned that is critical of the contentious topic.
Amazon removed Maria Keffler’s Desist, Detrans, & Detox: Getting Your Child Out of the Gender Cult. The new book sold fewer than 100 copies across three platforms and earned fewer than a dozen reviews before it was banned, according to Partners for Ethical Care (PEC), of which Keffler is a co-founder.
The organization says that Amazon provided “no contact, no warning, no reason” for removing the book.
According to the Daily Wire, PEC is a nonprofit organization co-founded by Keffler and is designed to raise awareness and support efforts to stop the unethical treatment of children by schools, hospitals and healthcare providers under the banner of “gender identity affirmation.” Keffler’s book is about that exact subject.
Amazon banned the book just weeks after it removed Ryan T. Anderson’s When Harry Became Sally, which is about the trans youth movement that has become in vogue over the past few years.
Despite banning all books critical of the transgender identity movement for apparent hate speech, Amazon continues to sell books like Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf. Amazon has set up a new policy that bans any books that attempt to classify transgenderism or other new identities as mental illnesses, according to Brian Huseman, Amazon’s vice president of public policy.
“As a bookseller, we provide our customers with access to a variety of viewpoints, including books that some customers may find objectionable,” Huseman said in response to Republican Sens. Marco Rubio of Florida, Mike Lee of Utah, Mike Braun of Indiana and Josh Hawley of Missouri in a March letter. The group of senators complained to the retailer when it banned Anderson’s book.
“Amazon works hard to ensure customers have a great shopping experience, and access to the widest and most diverse cross-section of written and spoken word in retail today,” Huseman added. “That said, we reserve the right not to sell certain content. All retailers make decisions about what selection they choose to offer, as do we. As to your specific question about When Harry Became Sally, we have chosen not to sell books that frame LGBTQ+ identity as a mental illness.”

Liberal Health Minister Patty Hajdu announced a $7.7 million fund to deal injectable opioids to Toronto’s addicts on Wednesday, claiming that the project will help increase access to a “safe supply” of drugs.
Hajdu appearing alongside Toronto Mayor John Tory said that the funds will go to three projects in the city.
“Through this funding, the Government of Canada is supporting Toronto Public Health to expand the medication options available for people with severe opioid use disorder in Toronto. Toronto Public Health’s project will be the first of its kind in Ontario to offer injectable hydromorphone for people with opioid use disorder who do not respond to currently available services and who remain at high risk of overdose,” a government press release claimed.
For some time, Tory has been advocating for the federal government to intervene in the city’s opioid epidemic.
The federal government has provided Toronto with funds for similar initiatives in the past, including funding for Toronto Public Health’s safer supply project and a two-year extension of similar programs South Riverdale Community Health Centre and Parkdale Queen West Community Health Centre.
In 2019, under the watch of Hajdu, Health Canada gave the green light for the use of injectable hydromorphone to treat opioid addicts.
Other cities including Victoria and Vancouver have also asked the federal government for help on dealing with the opioid epidemic.
Most recently, the Government of British Columbia requested an exemption from the federal government which would decriminalize possession of hard drugs province-wide.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford has spoken out against the idea of decriminalizing hard drugs in the province.
“Absolutely not. I am not in favour of legalizing small quantities of cocaine or heroin,” Ford said.
“We aren’t talking about weed or marijuana, we’re talking about serious drugs that can kill people, that are highly, highly addictive.”
However, Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health Dr. Eileen de Villa expressed support for the idea in a recent report on drug overdose deaths.
Further, in August, Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam said she was willing to discuss opioid decriminalization.

Parliament Hill protesters host Family Fun Day

What a sight to encounter in Ottawa the other day, something that was one part anti-lockdown demonstration and one part venue for kids to have fun in the great outdoors.
And so it was that a few hundred parents and their children rollicked on Parliament Hill for what was billed as a “Family Fun Day.”
(Remember those?)
The attendees indeed had lots of fun as they celebrated… normalcy. There were clowns and magicians and puppeteers and costumed superheroes on the Hill. Children took part in everything from dancing to kicking around a soccer ball to wrestling their siblings. Kids were just… being kids. And almost everyone wasn’t wearing a mask. It was as if folks, young and old alike, were partying like it was… 2019.
The event was the brainchild of sisters Stephanie and Samantha, who we first encountered at the Radisson Hotel in Toronto. Until recently, this sister act was conducting demonstrations at this property, which is now doing business as one of those gruesome government quarantine facilities. No families are having fun at this Radisson these days…
Still, while fun reigned on Parliament Hill during the four hour-long Family Fun Day, there was a hint of melancholy in the air. After all, only a few hundred attended, not several thousand (even though we have the feeling that if kids forced to stay home that day could’ve attended, they would’ve done so in a heartbeat).
Our take: so many parents, guardians and caregivers have been so indoctrinated by a year’s worth of coronavirus fear tactics spewed by all levels of government, the bureaucracies and the public health officials, and, of course, the rank-and-file membership of the Media Party. And so it is that a bunch of kids having fun outdoors is likely looked upon as a “superspreader” event, when there is zero evidence to indicate this is the case.
Bottom line: those who attended Family Fun Day indeed had a ton of fun. How sad that those children who were forced to remain sequestered at home indoors playing video games never got to enjoy the merriment of this day, all thanks to adults who remain inexplicably terrified of the Wuhan virus boogeyman.

“It’s a song that I wrote about coming out of lockdown, with some much needed optimism," Jagger said in a statement Tuesday. “Thanks to Dave Grohl for jumping on drums, bass and guitar. It was a lot of fun working with him.”
The duo recorded the song and video in different studio locations — Jagger at home and Grohl in the Foo Fighters studio — and the lyrics mention “prison walls,” “virtual premieres,” numbers that are “grim” and Zoom calls. Jagger complains: “I've got nothing left to wear.”
The song also name-checks Bill Gates, lampoons conspiracy theories and those who deny climate change and gleefully reveals “There's aliens in the deep state.”
But there seems to be hope. Jagger looks ahead and sees a “garden of earthly delights” when vaccines are administered and lockdown ends.

Rebellious restaurateurs link up for barbecue protest in Alberta

Rebel News was on location at the Whistle Stop Café in Mirror, Alberta this past Saturday, where owner Chris Scott has refused to shut down, despite new provincial lockdown measures. Chris has become, in the eyes of many, the unofficial leader of Alberta’s restaurant revolution, as many businesses are following his lead in refusing to heed Alberta Health Services' directives.
Adam Skelly of Adamson Barbecue in Toronto was on location for the day as guest chef. Adam, like Chris, defied government restrictions and kept his business open. But unlike in Alberta where Chris had support from other businesses, Skelly stood alone in defiance. In response to this defiance, he was locked out of his restaurant and ultimately publicly detained by a platoon of officers, including, as though for dramatic effect, mounted RCMP.
Hundreds were on hand for Saturday’s event, with many waiting in line for hours for a chance to get their fill of Adamson Barbecue. A seemingly endless parade of cars and trucks honked in support of the event while passing by, though you might not have heard them over the live music that entertained the large crowd throughout the day. Numerous attendees commented on how “normal” all of this seemed, when contrasted with the isolation and starkness of a locked-down Canada.
AHS and the RCMP did arrive on location, issuing yet another closure order to the Whistle Stop Café. They also quickly cleared out a few guests who were dining inside the restaurant, but made no effort to put an end to the large outdoor event, which Skelly noted was an incredible departure from the abuse he endured at the hand of police and RCMP in Toronto.
Chris Scott insists that events like these will continue at the Whistle Stop until the government stops imposing crippling and overreaching restrictions on local businesses.

Over 2,000 people took to the steps of the Alberta legislature on Monday over the lunch hour to protest the provincial government’s third COVID lockdown. Representatives from business, medical, faith, amateur sports and civil liberties organizations took to the podium to call for an end to the pandemic restrictions. Maxime Bernier, of the People’s Party of Canada and the End the Lockdown Caucus from Liberty Coalition Canada, was the keynote speaker.
After the peaceful event, Premier Jason Kenney denounced the protesters as “unhinged” and “conspiracy theorists” in response to the crowd chanting “lock her up,” referring to Chief Medical Officer of Health Deena Hinshaw. The chant is reminiscent of the one chanted at Trump rallies about Hillary Clinton, however, no one has ever been locked up after a crowd has repeated those three words in unison.
Unlike the premier, from his sterile perch in his fancy taxpayer funded office, Rebel News was out at the protest, talking to the people about why they were willing to risk a $1,200 fine for being part of an illegal gathering to express their objections to how the government has handled the coronavirus.
Many people told Rebel News they were sick of the separation from their families, tired of constant fearmongering, angry about the harm being inflicted on small businesses, worried about how ongoing isolation is hurting kids, and fed up with the government calling people who disagree with the lockdown names.

It’s been nearly a week since the NDP concluded their 2021 federal policy convention and the party is still reeling from a number of embarrassing and controversial policy resolutions, including a plan to abolish the Canadian Armed Forces as well accusations of anti-Semitism.
The virtual convention, which took place April 9 to 11, concluded with a number of the resolutions being adopted by the NDP including a plan to introduce a wealth tax on Canada’s millionaires and billionaires.

Organizer discusses plan to “replicate” Joe Biden campaign
During a discussion on campaigning during the COVID-19 pandemic, former Manitoba NDP MLA and party Chief of Staff Jennifer Howard suggested that the NDP would “look to replicate” as much of US Democratic President Joe Biden’s campaign as possible when going into the next federal election.
“I remember from the American campaign several really good moments with Democratic candidates like President Biden, Vice President Harris, where you just saw them on a phone talking to a constituent or talking to a volunteer, low tech, not a lot of production. It really was able to communicate an inspirational message to people, but also show that candidate’s connection to somebody and having an actual conversation. So, we’ll look to replicate as much of that as we can,” said Howard.
Far-left treasury candidate complains about party not being radical enough
One candidate running for the NDP’s treasurer position took the opportunity to use the convention as a platform to complain that the party’s current leadership is not doing enough to end capitalism.
Gary Porter, who is also a former board member of the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan, was representing the party’s United Front of Allied Socialists.
“The establishment candidates are pro-capitalist. I think they would agree with me. They want to reform the system piecemeal and leave the capitalists in power. This means any reforms won by working people will be reversed by capital at the first opportunity over the decades,” said Porter.
“The goal of reforming capitalism is unrealistic and forty-five years of neoliberal slash and burn politics have proven that the candidates backed by the United Front of Allied Socialists are anti-capitalist, pro-worker and pro-socialist. We proposed to end capitalism to build a new society with workers and their allies in power.”
Recruiting more women to break down capitalism and patriarchy
Federal NDP candidate for London North-Center and former NDP Women’s Commission Chair Dirka Prout told party members during the second day of the convention that the NDP should be doing more to recruit women to break down capitalism and patriarchy.
“Let’s win more women to socialism through supporting women’s candidates with our fund, educational outreach and mentorship and altering policies to build international peace and solidarity, improve the lives of women and all Canadians while breaking down systems of capitalism and patriarchy,” said Prout.
Member complains about “very scary” cyberbullying during convention
One party member Alyssa Blank took the opportunity to raise what she called “very scary” hate speech, doxxing and cyberbullying going on in the context of the online convention. Blank did not name any specific instances of online hate.
“Online there’s been a tremendous amount of hate speech, tremendous amount of doxxing which is super concerning and just general cyber bullying. It’s making it very difficult and very scary and dangerous for people to participate,” said Blank.
Bragging about recruiting four times as many LGBT candidates than the Liberals
At one point during the NDP convention’s first day, NDP LGBT Commission Chair Tara Patterson bragged about how the party was able to secure four times as many queer and trans candidates than the Liberals.
“We worked hard to recruit to us 2SLGBTQ+ candidates to run in provincial and federal elections across the country. And I’m proud to say that we had 40 queer and trans candidates in the twenty nineteen election, which was four times more than the Liberals,” said Patterson.
Delegate says police resolution doesn’t do enough to defund the police
During a debate on a policy resolution on combating racism in police and the correctional system, one delegate argued that the policy did not go far enough and that the NDP should be “defunding” police in Canada.
“This amendment doesn’t go far enough. We should be defunding the police,” said the delegate.

Liberal staffers circulated talking points in case reporters quizzed the government on a Globe and Mail article about a $2.5 million bill for upgrades to the prime minister's official Harrington Lake residence.
The memo was part of a longer email passed around by Tristan Laycock with Public Services and Procurement Canada the morning after the article was published.
The following talking points were included in an email sent from Laycock to fellow government staffers including Sabrina Kim, Alana Kiteley, Muna Tojiboeva, Leslie Church, Elliott Lockington, Emily Harris, James Fitz-Morris, Cecely Roy and Chelsea Kusnick:

David Menzies gets physical with Chris Sky and Vince Del Monte

We recently paid a visit to the west end Toronto home of fitness fanatic and freedom fighter Vince Del Monte. Speaking from his exceptional home gym (where anti-lockdown advocate Chris Sky just happened to be pumping iron), Del Monte made an impassioned plea for the authorities to let Hogtown’s gyms and sporting clubs reopen.
The reasons why these facilities remain locked down escape us. Indeed, while Premier Doug Ford wants Ontarians to stay in their basements baking cherry cheesecake, we must ponder the cost to the physical and even mental well-being of formerly active people becoming couch potatoes due to ludicrous Wuhan virus protocols.
As well, on the physicality side, a disturbing study stateside suggests that many Americans might have to supersize their haberdashery post-COVID-19. A poll by Harris conducted for the American Psychological Association shows 42 per cent of Americans have gained a stunning 29 pounds on average during the pandemic. While there are no corresponding Canadian numbers, we suspect the results here in the Great White North are likely similar. That’s what happens when the fast food drive-through replaces the gymnasium in one’s daily routine.
Meanwhile on the psychological side, the Canadian Mental Health Association reports that 10 per cent of Canadians have considered committing suicide during the pandemic (in a non-pandemic year, that number is typically around 2.5 per cent, meaning we have seen a fourfold increase).
As for Del Monte, he would like to see gyms embrace civil disobedience and open their doors a la Adam Skelly of Adamson Barbecue. After all, what are the authorities going to do? Arrest everyone? And why? For trying to get people physically fit again? Madness.
Postscript: Del Monte and Sky noticed that yours truly was looking a little porcine these days (hey folks, it’s been a long winter!) and they conscripted me to the weight room, for which I was truly grateful. The experience brought back memories of the good ol’ days (pre-Wuhan virus) in which going to a gym was not akin to visiting a speakeasy during Prohibition.
Erin O’Toole unveils “daring” carbon pricing plan

Conservative leader Erin O’Toole has announced a carbon pricing model he says will meet Canada’s Paris emissions commitments without the economic consequences of Justin Trudeau’s approach.
The Conservatives published their 15-page climate plan Thursday, entitled “Secure the Environment: The Conservative Plan to Combat Climate Change.” The policy would roll back the carbon price from $40 per tonne to $20 per tonne, then increase it over time to $50 per tonne.
The Conservative plan continues to tax consumers “each time they buy hydrocarbon-based fuel,” but puts the levy into a “Personal Low Carbon Savings Account,” which taxpayers can draw from to make government-approved green expenditures such as buying a transit pass or electric vehicle or making green home renovations.
Small businesses will be eligible for a similar type of account.
The plan doesn’t definitively lay out how these accounts will be managed, but suggests they could be run by a consortium of financial service providers as Interac is.
“Canadian families and businesses have been trailblazers in the use of affinity or rewards programs and have great expertise in both managing and using them,” the document says.
The Conservatives would maintain a steep price on emissions for large industrial emitters, though the document says the price will be tied to that of the European Union and United States to minimize the risk of jobs shifting to more competitive jurisdictions.
O’Toole said Thursday his proposal is “daring,” but necessary.
“Canada must not ignore the reality of climate change,” he said. “It is already impacting our ecosystems, hurting our communities, and damaging our infrastructure. Canada’s Conservatives will meet our Paris climate commitment and reduce emissions by 2030 to fight climate change and protect our environment. But we won’t do it on the backs of working Canadians or by hurting our economy.”
The Conservatives insist this plan does not maintain a carbon tax because the money collected does not go into government coffers.
O’Toole’s plan would also require that by 2030, zero emission vehicles must make up 30% of the light duty vehicle market. A Conservative government would spend $1 billion to expand electric vehicle manufacturing in Canada, plus an additional $1 billion on “deploying hydrogen technology.”
O’Toole’s plan has been derided by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF). During last year’s Conservative leadership race, O’Toole signed the CTF’s “no carbon tax” pledge.
“Last summer, (Erin O’Toole) told us he would repeal carbon taxes. Today, he’s breaking that promise,” the CTF tweeted.
In a fireside chat with the Independent Press Gallery last year, O’Toole said his plan would let the provinces tackle emissions in their own ways.
“There’s no federal carbon tax. I will eliminate the carbon tax completely,” O’Toole said of his approach last July. “We have to respect what the provinces are doing now…. We need to follow the provinces here because, guess what, they have shared jurisdiction on the economy.”
The new Conservative plan makes repeated mentions of working with the provinces, but does not go into detail on how much autonomy provinces will have within the national framework.

A Mississippi man remains in critical condition, can’t walk, talk and is paralyzed on one side of his body after suffering a stroke hours after being vaccinated with Johnson & Johnson’s COVID vaccine. Family believes “without a doubt” the vaccine caused the stroke.
A healthy 43-year old man in Mississippi suffered a stroke hours after being vaccinated with Johnson and Johnson’s (J&J) COVID vaccine. Brad Malagarie, father of seven, had received the vaccine a little after Noon and was found unresponsive by co-workers at his desk, WSAZ News Channel 3 reported.
“They called me and said he had that vaccine and something is wrong, we think it’s a stroke,” said Celeste Foster O’Keefe, Malagarie’s aunt and boss.
Malagarie was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with a stroke after a blood clot had lodged in his left middle cerebral artery. O’Keefe said the family believes without a doubt that the vaccine caused the stroke.
“He’s a young, healthy 43-year-old, and I immediately thought it, and I said be sure to tell the doctors he took that J & J vaccine and that, to me, is what caused his stroke,” she told WSAZ.
O’Keefe said her nephew’s only health issue before the vaccine was high blood pressure, which was controlled with medication. One week after receiving the vaccine Malagarie remains hospitalized at Ochsner’s Medical Center in New Orleans and is in critical, but stable condition.
“He can’t talk now and he can’t walk. He’s paralyzed on the right side. He knows who we are and he will just cry when he sees us,” O’Keefe said.
Doctors don’t know Malagarie’s prognosis for recovery yet but said it will likely take at least a year of rehab after he leaves the hospital, the local TV station said.
On Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) paused J&J’s vaccine after rare blood clots were reported in those recently vaccinated.
All six reported cases in the U.S. occurred among women aged 18-48 with symptoms developing six to 13 days after vaccination, according to a statement issued by the FDA and CDC.
One vaccine recipient died and her death is being investigated by the CDC, Virginia state officials said in a statement Tuesday. Another woman is in critical condition. A CDC official said two of the six patients have been discharged and three remain hospitalized.
Wednesday, J&J disclosed two more cases of blood clots — one that occurred in a 25 year-old-man who suffered a cerebral hemorrhage during a clinical trial and another case of deep-vein-thrombosis in a 59-year-old woman.
According to the CDC’s Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System or VAERS, 49 reports of blood coagulation disorders from the J&J vaccine have been reported through April 1 and 972 reports from all three vaccines combined, including Pfizer and Moderna through April 1.
The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices met Wednesday and decided to postpone a vote on whether to lift the pause on the J&J’s COVID vaccine, effectively extending the pause pending further analysis of data relating to blood clots in people who received the vaccine. The committee said they would meet again in one week to 10 days to vote on whether or not to lift the pause.

Around 300 Canadians gathered at the Vancouver Art Gallery over the weekend to protest against the medical transitioning of children and the presence of gender ideology in school.
The protest was also in solidarity with the B.C. father known as C.D., who has been jailed for speaking out about the medical transitioning of his biologically female child that is being done without his consent.
The B.C. Supreme Court seems to be setting a new precedent regarding parental rights in Canada, through cases like C.D.’s, as well as A.M. vs. her child’s general practitioner, which involved this mother having to file for an injunction to prevent her child’s breasts from being removed without her consent.
Meanwhile, the United Kingdom has been forced to acknowledge that a discussion needs to be had regarding such practices. One of the main people speaking out about this issue is Keira Bell, who transitioned as a child and then took legal action against the system that allowed her to do so, after she grew up and regretted her transition.
Despite such cases being well publicized, many of Vancouver’s mainstream media, the City of Vancouver and even a union called IATSE Local 891 labelled the Vancouver protest an “anti-transgender event,” implying that it was hateful in nature.
Pastor Paul Dirks, the rally’s organizer, feels the protest had nothing to do with hate, but rather standing up against medical malpractice. One of the rally’s speakers was a transgender advocate for at-risk children named Jenn Smith, and there was also a statement from Hacsi Horvath, who formerly identified as transgender.
But none of this was enough to stop angry counter-protesters who believed the narrative being pushed by these organizations from throwing things into the crowd, trying to drown out the speeches with noise, removing their clothing, and grabbing my microphone while I tried to bring you the other side of the story.

Ottawa mulls introducing mandatory masking at parks

Ottawa health authorities are considering implementing a masking requirement for the city’s public parks as COVID-19 cases continue to surge and threaten hospital capacities.
“We are at a major, major point here as a city. The situation in Ottawa is the worst that it has been to date during this pandemic,” said Ottawa’s deputy medical officer of health Dr. Brent Moloughney.
According to reports the mask mandate could be introduced using a Section 22 order under the Health Protection and Promotion Act which allows health officers to “require a person to take or to refrain from taking any action in respect of a communicable disease.”
The exact details of the order are yet to be determined but some speculate it will include a gathering limit for parks and playgrounds as well as mandatory outdoor masking.
Ontario has already introduced a strict province-wide stay-at-home order to combat the recent uptick in the virus.
Meanwhile, Ottawa has moved to close parks two hours earlier than usual to prevent people from gathering in groups.
According to the current public health rules, masking is only required in indoor public spaces.
Section 22 orders have been implemented in Ottawa before. On February 16, 2021, Ottawa’s Medical Officer of Health Vera Etches ordered outdoor recreational sites to limit capacity at skating rinks, tobogganing hills and other activities to 25 people.
The order also required social distancing and mandatory masking signage to be posted on location.
“Wear a mask in a manner that covers their mouth, nose, and chin at an outdoor recreational amenity including surrounding publicly accessible areas such as change and rest areas when not actively participating in a recreational activity. Although masks are not mandatory while actively participating in a recreational activity, they are highly recommended when skating on ice rinks and participating in other outdoor recreation activities within a confined space,” the order read.

Canada Border Services Agency officers seized 64 bricks of what they believe was cocaine last month at the Pacific Highway border crossing.
On March 18, a commercial driver entered Canada in a tractor-trailer carrying personal care products but during an examination officers noticed anomalies, the agency said in a news release Thursday.
Border services officers unloaded the trailer, found a total of 64 individually wrapped brick-shaped objects, and tested the contents.
CBSA spokeswoman Kristine Wu said officers scanned the powdered substance, which field-tested positive for cocaine.
“All suspected narcotics require further laboratory analysis to confirm the exact composition. In this case, the suspected cocaine was handed over to the RCMP for further investigation and analysis,” said Wu in an email.
The bricks had a combined weight of 71.5 kilograms, with an estimated street value of more than $3.5 million, according to officers.
The driver was arrested.

And the problem with this is that it would now force companies like YouTube, like Facebook to be deputized by government, to lay down the hatchet, to push the big censor button and you lose that recourse. You can't go to federal court, you can't fight it in court, you eliminate the transparency.
Now that we have private companies that are going to be censoring as agents of the state, things like this are going to become more common.

Gerald Butts celebrates after Erin O’Toole reveals carbon tax plan

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s former top advisor Gerald Butts took to Twitter on Thursday to celebrate Conservative Party Leader Erin O’Toole’s newly unveiled carbon tax plan.
In response to the plan, Butts congratulated the party for taking action by embracing a carbon tax.
“Conventional wisdom used to be you couldn’t get elected in [Canada] on a carbon price. Now even Conservatives think you can’t get elected without one. Congrats to all the Canadians who made that happen,” tweeted Butts.
Butts resigned from his position as the prime minister’s principal secretary in 2019 after being implicated in the Liberal government’s SNC-Lavalin scandal.
Earlier today, the Conservative Party published a 15-page climate plan. The document, entitled “Secure the Environment: The Conservative Plan to Combat Climate Change,” lays out a plan to reduce the Liberal $40 a tonne tax to $20 per tonne with an eventual increase to $50 a tonne.
The tax would apply for Canadians “each time they buy hydrocarbon-based fuel” with an added “Personal Low Carbon Savings Account” which will allow Canadians to withdraw money for so-called green expenditures.
“Canada must not ignore the reality of climate change,” said O’Toole.
“It is already impacting our ecosystems, hurting our communities, and damaging our infrastructure. Canada’s Conservatives will meet our Paris climate commitment and reduce emissions by 2030 to fight climate change and protect our environment. But we won’t do it on the backs of working Canadians or by hurting our economy.”
Other measures in the plan include a study on “new taxes on frequent flyers, non-electric luxury vehicles and second homes to deter activities that hurt the environment.” A Conservative government would also spend $1 billion on domestic electric vehicle manufacturing and an additional $1 billion to deploy hydrogen technology.
During his campaign to lead the party, O’Toole promised voters that his government would end Trudeau’s carbon tax. In March, O’Toole reiterated his commitment to “repeal Justin Turdeau’s carbon tax.
“We will protect the environment and fight climate change, but we won’t do it by making the poorest pay more,” said O’Toole.

A group of anti-lockdown federal and provincial politicians says Canadians are being victimized more by government’s mismanagement of the pandemic than by COVID-19 itself.
End the Lockdowns Caucus members Derek Sloan, Randy Hillier, Maxime Bernier, and Pastor Michael Thiessen held a press conference on Parliament Hill Thursday morning, in which they called out the “series of failures” from federal and provincial governments for which Canadians are still paying.
“What we have seen from our government is a series of failures,” said Sloan, an independent MP. “The first was a failure to respond to COVID-19 at the beginning. While countries like Taiwan implemented travel measures against COVID-19 on January 1st of 2020, our public health authorities were calling them racist and ineffective for months after this time.”
Sloan pointed that Taiwan has had just 11 total COVID-19 deaths.
He went on to accuse the federal government of failing to protect the elderly, who are disproportionately vulnerable to the virus.
Sloan said the government has also failed when it comes to not bolstering research and information about preventative measures, such as vitamin D, which he said could have mitigated the panic government allowed to permeate.
“They did nothing to quell the fear that’s so rampant in our society,” said Sloan. “Every death is a tragedy but remember if we are creating more deaths than those we are preventing that is a greater tragedy.”
The press conference comes as provinces ramp up their own restrictions and Ontario’s government reportedly considers imposing a curfew.
Bernier, the leader of the People’s Party of Canada, said more politicians need to stand up for civil liberties as governments fight the pandemic.
“In the last thirteen months of restrictions the prime minister and provincial premiers have violated our rights and freedoms. We have been living with lockdowns and restrictions that have dictated every aspect of our lives for over a year. It was supposed to be a two-week measure to flatten the curve,” said Bernier.
“Never in the history of mankind has a country locked up its entire population to stop a virus. It is a failed experiment and Canadians are paying the price. We must reopen our economy knowing that Canadians under the age of 70 have a 99.95% survival rate among those infected with the virus.”
These comments were echoed by Hillier, an independent member of Ontario’s provincial legislature, who characterized the government response to COVID as Canada’s “greatest threat.”
“Our province and our country is facing the greatest threat that it has ever faced in its existence and its history this threat is not external this threat is not COVID – this threat is a struggle and a conflict for the conscience of Canadians,” said Hillier.
“We have seen all our governments enact measures that are un-Canadian, measures that are unconstitutional, measures that are political under the pretext of a health crisis and I say that with all sincerity.”
The End the Lockdowns Caucus was first announced in February of this year through the organization LIberty Coalition Canada.
To date, the group counts over 50 current and former officials from municipal, provincial and federal levels of government.

Chinese government forcibly closes Catholic orphanage

The Chinese government is forcing an orphanage for disabled children to close because it is run by the Catholic Church.
According to International Christian Concern, Liming Zhi Jia (Dawn House orphanage) in Hebei province will soon be closed after local government officials refused to give the orphanage the required permits to continue operating.
Government regulations restricting the evangelization of minors appears to be the primary motive.
The children of the orphanage will be moved to state-run institutions. While the nuns were initially promised visiting rights to their former children, authorities have since reneged on the deal.
The orphanage was founded in 1988, before China began its crackdown on independent religious groups. The nuns have never been able to secure support from the government, having instead to rely on donations.
The move comes as other Catholic orphanages in China also face threat of closure. At least two other orphanages have either closed or will soon be closing following action by regulators.
In recent years, the Chinese government has increased attacks on religious groups that do not conform to Communist ideology. China has set up its own state-owned version of the Catholic Church, the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association, and has systematically targeted Catholics that stay loyal to the papacy.
Along with providing a crucial social service the Chinese government was not providing, the orphanage was actually appreciated by some local officials.
“Catholic groups showed that what they did was for love, not profit. The staff and the Catholic Sisters serving there deserve respect,” one Communist official said in anonymity.
“The love shared with the abandoned children comes from their faith in God. It is uncommon and rarely seen in other sectors in society.”

Cabinet discussions have been “intense” as the Progressive Conservative government decides what stronger measures are required to safeguard an overloaded hospital system, according to the Nepean MPP involved in the talks.
On Friday morning, Lisa MacLeod, the minister of heritage, sport, tourism and culture industries, was leaving it to the premier Doug Ford to announce new restrictions later in the day, but she said cabinet has been listening to the advice from top health and science advisors in its deliberations.
MacLeod, who answered questions after at a virtual announcement for a housing project in Ottawa, defended the government against criticisms that it hasn’t done enough to prevent a huge increase in COVID-19 cases and protect the health care system under immense strain.
“I think to date we have taken strong leadership and we have done our level best in balancing all of the needs, and it’s easy to be an armchair quarterback … when you’re sitting in those meetings for 8-10 hours and you’re presented with a number of different scenarios to make the best decision you possibly can, and I think the premier’s leadership has been extraordinarily strong at this time.”
MacLeod said cabinet has been trying to find a balance in the restrictions.
“We have brought in tough public health measures that have been criticized by many in the business community and civil libertarians as being too far and then some of course on the other side said it’s not strict enough,” MacLeod said.

The Canadian Medical Association is calling for “extraordinary” measures, including sharing provincial health-care resources and dropping the per-capita approach to vaccine distribution, to address the COVID-19 crisis unfolding in several provinces.
The CMA says it wants the federal government to consider re-prioritizing its vaccine distribution strategy to focus on urgent areas instead of distributing to provinces on a per-capita basis.
The organization also says provinces should be sharing its health-care resources with areas that are especially hard-hit, including Ontario and Quebec where ICU capacity is overwhelmed.
Dr. Ann Collins, president of the CMA, says Canada is at a “critical juncture” of the pandemic, adding a “truly national approach” is needed to combat rising COVID activity in parts of the country.
The CMA says further restrictions “must also be considered” in provinces experiencing rapid rates of COVID-19 transmission.

Canada’s Federal Court of Appeal has ruled that the agreement that allows Canada to turn back asylum seekers from the United States does not violate the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
On Thursday, a three-person panel of judges unanimously ruled that the safe third country agreement between the governments of Canada and the United States is constitutional.
“Those who arrive in the United States must claim refugee status in the United States under United States law. They cannot leave the United States and claim refugee status in Canada at a land port of entry. If they do so, Canada can refuse to consider their refugee claim and, if they have no other legal basis for remaining in Canada, return them to the United States,” the ruling read.
The decision was welcomed by the Canadian government, which said the agreement is an important part of Canada’s handling of asylum claimants.
The [safe third country agreement] has served Canada well for 16 years, ensuring that our shared border remains well managed. For the last three years, Canada has welcomed more refugees than any other country in the world, and continues to provide protection to those fleeing conflict and persecution,” Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada said in a statement.
“Canada remains firmly committed to upholding a fair and compassionate refugee protection system and the STCA remains a comprehensive means for the compassionate, fair, and orderly handling of asylum claims at the Canada-U.S. land border.”
According to the safe third country agreement, Canada can turn away migrants attempting to seek asylum if they are arriving from the United States. As both countries consider each other safe countries, individuals must apply for asylum in the first country they arrive in.
In July 2020, the Federal Court ruled that safe third country agreement violates the Charter’s guarantees of life, liberty and security. On Thursday, the panel accepted the federal government’s arguments that the court misinterpreted the relevant laws.
The panel granted a six month extension to safe third country agreement, with a future court case deciding the ultimate future of the agreement.
In recent years, Canada has seen an influx of people trying to seek asylum in Canada by illegally crossing the US border. Under the safe third country agreement, Canada could have turned back many of these crossers.
In 2019, the influx into crossing points like Roxham Road led the Trudeau government to spend millions on housing and other benefits for illegal border crossers.

Crown and Anchor Pub in Alberta suffers violence during struggle to stay open

The Crown and Anchor Pub is a meeting place for local veterans. The North Edmonton bar serves as something of a community centre for people looking to get out of the house, have a pint, tell some stories and have a little bit of human interaction.
Unfortunately, the Crown and Anchor has ended up in the middle of two warring factions of the pandemic lockdown: the “pro locker-downers” and the “open everything up, or else” tribes.
Terry and Theresa Shaw, the pub's owners, reopened their business in defiance of the lockdown on indoor dining in Alberta. Nearly immediately, Alberta Health Services descended on the business, issuing them a closure notice.
Proponents of the lockdown also started sending threatening messages to the Crown and Anchor for being open, which caused Terry and Theresa to become very concerned for the safety of their staff, which includes their daughter. The Shaws are now working to comply with the shutdown and are ramping up their patio capacity as best they can, but they're concerned about their aging customer base sitting outside in the 4° degree weather.
Normally, the Shaws aren't the kind of people to be bullied by anybody, but there's more to the story.
During the second lockdown (we're on our third out here in Alberta), the Shaws' daughter was hit in the face with a glass by an angry customer who reacted violently when she asked the customer to put a mask on.
She just wanted the customer to follow the rules so her mom and dad's business wouldn't get in trouble. Now she's still recovering, and her face may be scarred forever.
The violent attack on their daughter is the reason the Shaws are taking this latest round of threats against them seriously.
The Crown and Anchor fiasco is a reminder that good people face real consequences from bad government decisions that divide the public. People on one side are mad because the Shaws are making the decision to comply with health orders out of concern for their daughter. Those on the other are mad that they didn't comply in the first place.
And in the middle is one family-run business just trying to stay afloat.
NDP MP disputes Liberal MP’s claim to Indigenous identity

NDP MP Mumilaaq Qaqqaq disputed the Indigenous identity of Newfoundland and Labrador Liberal MP Yvonne Jones in a tweet on Friday, saying that Jones is “not an Inuk” as has been previously claimed.
Qaqqaq, who is an Inuk woman herself from Nunavut, made the tweet on April 16, 2021 in response to a 2019 post by the Twitter account Indigenous Politics, which describes Jones as “Inuk.”
True North reached out to both Qaqqaq and Jones for comment on the matter but did not receive a response by the time this article was published.
Jones currently serves as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Northern Affairs and is a member of Labrador’s Southern Inuit, NunatuKavut.
Labrador’s NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) claims to represent around 6,000 Inuit-descended people with mixed ancestry. According to the Indigenous outlet Nunatsiaq News, the group primarily identified as Métis until 2010.
In 2019, Jones and the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations Carolynn Bennett achieved a memorandum of understanding between the Canadian Government and the NunatuKavut council recognizing the group’s Indigenous rights and self-determination.
“The recognition and implementation of Indigenous rights is critical to reconciliation and renewed relationships. I am convinced that these discussions will lead to a greater understanding of the interests and aspirations of the NunatuKavut community. An open dialogue is a first step toward a true relationship, and we look forward to exploring and advancing a shared journey toward reconciliation,” said Bennett in a July 2018 press release announcing the beginning of discussions with the group.
As part of the agreement, the NunatuKavut were recognized as an “Indigenous collective capable of holding section 35 Aboriginal rights.”
However, there are several Indigneous groups which refuse to recognize NunatuKavut claims to Indigeneity. Among the detractors include the neighbouring community of the Innu Nation who spoke out against the NunatuKavut deal with the federal government claiming that it did not reside on legal grounds.
“The Innu of Labrador do not, and have never, accepted that NCC or any of its predecessors represent an Aboriginal people of Canada within the meaning of s. 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982,” states a lawsuit filed by the Innu Nation.
“These allegations are a form of racism and lateral violence against NunatuKavut Inuit and perpetuate colonial narratives,” a response by the NunatuKavut claimed.
Nurses protest censorship of differing opinions on COVID

Members of the group Canadian Frontline Nurses, along with a few hundred supporters, staged a protest outside the downtown Toronto office of the College of Nurses of Ontario recently.
Simply put, those nurses who offer a contrarian opinion to the way in which Wuhan virus protocols are being enacted are being told to stand down and shut up — or face dismissal, and perhaps even the removal of their nursing credentials.
Just ask Kristen Nagle, one of the speakers at the protest. Kristen was in Washington, D.C. to deliver a speech back on January 6. Apparently, her egregious sin in the eyes of the London hospital she worked at and the CNO was being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Translation: she was ludicrously deemed to be part of the “insurrection” movement — even though she was nowhere near the U.S. Capitol that day.
Kristen was eventually fired for “wrong-speak” pertaining to such issues as the COVID-19 vaccine. Currently, the College of Nurses of Ontario is reviewing her actions and might even penalize her by stripping her of her nursing credentials, preventing Kristen from ever working as a nurse again.
But the demonstration was more than people venting about cancel culture. Indeed, Kristen announced that Canadian Frontline Nurses is now in the process of filing a class action lawsuit against the College of Nurses of Ontario. We wish them well. After all, the CNO seems to be less of a governing body pertaining to nursing these days, and more of a vindictive Orwellian organization that is completely intolerant of contrarian opinions.
Postscript: we reached out to the CNO for comment, but alas, the doors to their headquarters remained locked. It also appears that the “nurse-aucrats” at the CNO are all cowering with fear within their personal homes, given that the only sight of life we spotted at CNO HQ was a solitary security guard who was also too terrified to come to the door.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford introduced new strict COVID-19 restrictions on Friday which include a ban on non-essential inter-provincial travel and new powers for law enforcement to stop and question people who are outside of their place of residence.
“I have never shied away from telling you the brutal honest truth, never shied away from tough decisions and today I am here to do just that. My friends, we are losing the battle between variants and vaccines,” said Ford.
According to Ford, his top priorities include limiting mobility as a means to reduce the impact of the COVID-19 surge.
The emergency declaration announced by Ontario earlier this month has also been extended along with the province’s stay-at-home order for at least another two weeks, for a total of six weeks.
As of Saturday, Ontario residents will now only be allowed to have outdoor gatherings with members of their households while outdoor amenities like golf courses, playgrounds, basketball courts and others will be restricted.
Big-box stores have had their indoor shopping capacity reduced to 25%, while places of worship are being allowed to hold indoor services but only for a maximum of ten people.
Starting on Monday, the province will also be instituting provincial checkpoints at all interprovincial crossings to prevent travel with the exception of people travelling for work, medical care and essential reasons.
According to Ford, the measures will be strongly enforced by law enforcement including special powers for police and bylaw officers to stop vehicles and question individuals on why they are outside of their place of residence.
“Police will have the authority to require any individual who is not in a place of residence to first provide their purpose for not being at home and provide their address,” said Ontario’s Solicitor General Sylvia Jones.
In its effort to ramp up vaccinations in COVID-19 hotspots, the Ontario government plans to increase the vaccine supplies directed to those communities by 25%.
The new rules are based on the province’s latest COVID-19 projections and models which indicate that hospitalization and ICU capacity are at the highest levels in the province since March 2020. Variants have also been detected at increasing rates while vaccinations are not reaching high-risk communities fast enough.

Police and bylaw officers in Ontario now have the power to stop and question any Ontario resident who is outside of their place of residence under the province’s new strict lockdown orders.
Since the order was announced, one constitutional rights group has already decried the new measures as the introduction of a “police state.”
The Canadian Constitution Foundation (CCF) put out a press release on Friday denouncing the new powers saying that it could disproportionately impact over-policed communities.
“Ontarians are essentially living under a 24 hour curfew and police will now be able to randomly stop people and vehicles and demand an explanation of why people are out living their lives. With these new police powers, Ontario is one step closer to becoming a police state,” said CCF Executive Director Joanna Baron.
“Low income and minority communities have borne the brunt of this pandemic in terms of cases and mortality, and they are now more likely to bear the brunt of police enforcement.”
The Ontario government has defended its decision to implement the new rules, claiming that they are necessary to stop the spread of COVID-19.
“With our hospital system under significant pressure and the continued increase of COVID-19 variants, we are stepping up enforcement to ensure that people adhere to the Stay-at-Home order and follow public health measures,” said Ontario’s Solicitor General Sylvia Jones.
“This is a critical moment in Ontario’s response to this deadly virus, that’s why we are doing whatever it takes to stop the spread and protect our communities.”
As announced earlier today by Ontario Premier Doug Ford, the enforcement measures will be in effect as long as the province’s stay-at-home order lasts.
“Effective Saturday, April 17, 2021 at 12:01 a.m., police officers and other provincial offences officers will have the authority to require any individual to provide their home address and purpose for not being at their residence,” a Government of Ontario press release writes.
“In addition, police officers, special constables and First Nation Constables will have the authority to stop vehicles to inquire about an individual’s reasons for leaving their home. This additional enforcement tool will only be in effect during the Stay-at-Home order and exclusively to enforce the Stay-at-Home order.”

The ability of ethylene oxide to damage DNA makes it an effective sterilizing agent but also accounts for its cancer-causing activity.
How are people exposed to ethylene oxide?
The primary routes of human exposure to ethylene oxide are inhalation and ingestion, which may occur through occupational, consumer, or environmental exposure. Because ethylene oxide is highly explosive and reactive, the equipment used for its processing generally consists of tightly closed and highly automated systems, which decreases the risk of occupational exposure.
Despite these precautions, workers and people who live near industrial facilities that produce or use ethylene oxide may be exposed to ethylene oxide through uncontrolled industrial emissions. The general population may also be exposed through tobacco smoke and the use of products that have been sterilized with ethylene oxide, such as medical products, cosmetics, and beekeeping equipment.
Which cancers are associated with exposure to ethylene oxide?
Lymphoma and leukemia are the cancers most frequently reported to be associated with occupational exposure to ethylene oxide. Stomach and breast cancers may also be associated with ethylene oxide exposure.
How can exposures be reduced?
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration has information about limiting occupational exposure to ethylene oxide.”

In 2005, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency considered banning ethylene oxide in new sterilizing facilities because of the cancer risk it posed to residents who lived around the plants.
“We also considered prohibiting the use of ethylene oxide for new facilities, which would necessitate the use of an alternative sterilization process,” reads the proposed rule, published in the federal register on Oct. 24, 2005.
Ultimately, under pressure from industry, and with the EPA’s acceptance of companies’ claims they were doing everything feasible to cut their emissions, the agency failed to act — worried about disrupting a key part of the process of sterilizing medical equipment in the U.S.
Fast-forward to 2019, and what’s past looks a lot like prologue.
Once again, the EPA is considering new restrictions on ethylene oxide sterilization because of the cancer risks it poses. Once again, the sterilizing and medical device industries are pushing back, warning of harm to patients if ethylene oxide is restricted. Federal lobbying disclosures show medical device makers and sterilizers have spent more than $1 million over the past 12 months lobbying Congress and the EPA on ethylene oxide issues.
There’s a big difference this time around, though: public awareness.
“Nobody in the last 40 years has been pressuring from the outside that there are community exposures from this,” said Peter Orris, MD, a professor and chief of occupational and environmental medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

“Moving forward, police will have the authority to require any individual who is not in a place of residence to, first, provide their purpose for not being at home, and provide their home address,” Ontario Solicitor General Sylvia Jones said, adding this also means motor vehicles can be randomly pulled over.
Jones put on a tough face when asked what would happen if Ontarians didn’t go along with these requests.
“If you are not willing to comply, then you are breaking the law and there is the option for the police officer to issue a ticket,” Jones said.
The new orders carry a $750 fine for a first offence.
However, several police services across the province have since released statements to that effect that they will not be making use of these new powers.
“New emergency orders announced yesterday to help limit the spread of COVID-19 are now in effect,” Toronto Police Service posted to social media Saturday morning. “The (TPS) will continue to engage, educate and enforce, but we will not be doing random stops of people or cars.”
The Ottawa Police Service stated in a news release: “The OPS will not be conducting random stops. We will be taking a deliberate and careful approach that emphasizes equity, legality, and efficacy in the application of these authorities with the specific and exclusive purpose to support public health measures.”
Police services in other jurisdictions — including Hamilton, Halton, Waterloo, Guelph, Niagara, Stratford, London, St. Thomas, Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes, South Simcoe, Barrie, North Bay, Sault Ste. Marie — released similar clarifications.
The Canadian Civil Liberties Association described the provincial announcement as “a Black Friday of rights slashing by Queen’s Park … risking a rash of racial profiling and over broad police police powers, presuming everyone outside guilty until proven otherwise. The mobility rights restrictions fail to achieve constitutional proportionality.”
